When we moved my husband moved ahead of the rest of us and bought a washer and dryer on his own. Though I was upset that I wasn't in on the decision he actually did a great job. He got an energy star HE front loading washer and dryer by Bosch. We LOVE them. Good Luck!

Stay away from the Sears HE series. Yikes! Nothing but trouble for me. But, that being said, be sure to get a front loader. Lots of convenience and less water and soap. Good luck. Be sure to go to Consumer Reports on line to get the low down on all the washers and dryer.

I have whirlpool duet front loading side by side. SO far so good (three years) - no service calls. I've had to "reboot" a couple of times when it seemed to get control locked - so keep your manual! I love the front loading and the big capacity.

Hi A. Looking into Sears Maytag and Signature appliances. I've had good luck with them.

I got the top of the line Samsung Steam Washer and Dryer. I love them!! So many functions-especially love the wrinkle release on the dryer. It takes all the wrinkles out of loads left too long in the dryer. It also has a function that tumbles the clothes every so often after finishing a load to keep them from wrinkling. (It runs for an extra 2 hrs I think.) I love them. I did 8 loads in one day-impossible with my old set. The washer was the top rated on Consumer Reports. They are quite pricey but I got them at Sears for 10% off and they price adjusted them after Christmas when they went on sale for 20% off. Good luck with your decision.

I respectfully disagree with Lisa W. I got Fisher & Paykel from Abt Electronic last March and love them. Most of the salespeople have them I was told. They are very affordable and are top loaders that act like the much pricer front loaders in terms of efficiency. Price wise they were less than the Maytag/Kenmore (same manufacturer) models.
Even the base washer has a stainless steel tub. The less expensive dryer (which I have) is much quieter I am told then the one with the stainless tub and that loads from top (I prefer to load from the side).
The only caveat is that it was a bit taller than my old Kenmore so I had to have my laundry cabinet raised about 6 inches (dimensions are listed on the Abt website) & the washer lid lifts straight up & the dryer door to the side.
