I know this is an elementary question; however, I have been breastfeeding my son and don't know the ins and out of formula. When using the ready-made formula, how do you go about warming it up? When I open the big cans of the ready made, you must refridgerate the bottles that you don't use at the time and use them within 24 hours? How do I go about warming it up? I know you can't microwave it.
I found that zapping a mug of hot water in the microwave and putting the full bottle in the cup did the trick.
Also, if you are using powder (which is WAY cheaper) you can warm up the water that you will use to make the formula in a small pot before you mix it.

I used a bottle warmer when I used ready to feed formula. Also, I beleive that you would need to use the bottles in the frige within 48 hours. It should say on the can. You can also just warm it up in a pot, or fill a pot with boiling water and let the bottle sit in it for about 15-20 minutes or until warm. I was a big fan of power formula. Lasts longer and you can serve it at room temp. saves the hassel of worrying about spoiled milk and easier to use when on the go.
For what it's worth, I never bothered. My son is a year old. For almost the entire year, I've been combining nursing and formula. (I never made enough milk.) From the start, I didn't warm his bottles. I've never warmed his babyfood. He has never indicated that he cares. Before you make yourself crazy, see if he'll take the bottles at room temp.
I never bothered heating it up. It's makes it a lot easier if they don't get used to warm formula and my son took it no problem.

My twins never got warmed formula--I make bottles with room temperature water and powder as I need it. Powdered formula will save you hundreds of dollars. If you do want to warm it from the fridge, you *can* put it in the microwave for 20 seconds or so and do not have the cap/nipple on. swirl it around to make sure the hotter parts are distributed evenly.
When I have to warm up the formula I have leftover, I take a mug with very hot tap water and put the bottle in there for about 3 minutes. It will bring it to room temp just fine. I also rinse the nipple in warm water. If you are using pre-made, you can use them within 48 hours just fine if they are in the fridge.
I have the Avent bottle warmer. I prepare 2 days worth of bottles and have them in the fridge (you have to use them within 72 hours...check your can). When it's time for a feeding, I pop one in the warmer for 4-5 minutes and it's ready. You could also boil some water in a pot and let the bottle sit in the boiling water for 5-10 minutes.

I don't know about formula, but you may want to look into the BPA issue, and consider using powder. Apparently cans have a liner that leaches an endocrine disrupter bisphenol A. I don't know that all the information is in but researchers believe it could have serious effects on developement, even in small amounts. I would suggest you also make sure that your bottles are safe. I know of the brand Born Free, they claim their bottle don't leach BPA.

You can use a bottle warmer. You place the bottle and formula into the bottle warmer, add water into the warmer and the steam warms the formula. You can get it at Babies R Us.
