Wait until she's a year old. I've never met a doctor who recommended it earlier, nor ever seen it recommended in a book. It is more about nutrition . . . cow's milk just doesn't have what's needed, and the first year is so important.

L.,
As long as she is getting enough nutrition through the foods you give her, she should be ok. We switched our son at 1 to whole milk...you are pretty close so it should be ok.

My mom is an RN and when I had this same idea for my daughter, she told me it is still best to wait until 12months. Reason being is that kids need til then to develop the enzyme to digest milk. If given too early, research supports a link to increased risk of diabetes.

My dr. recommended that you go half and half during month 11 and then whole milk at 12 mths. Doing it that way helps the digestive system make a smooth transfer to whole milk. I hope this helps.

As long as she is able to tolerate dairy and eats a wide variety of food, then i don't think one month would hurt. i wouldn't waste the formula, i would use it up. you can also mix 1/2 formula and 1/2 milk and begin cutting down on the formula to transition her over, just in case she doesn't like the taste of straight milk. you might give her a multivitamin just to make sure she is getting what the formula would have been giving her, that the cow's milk won't.

FYI...milk does not "replace" formula. Formula is a source of complete nutrition. Milk is a healthy beverage. If your child is eating full meals with all the proper nutrition, she will not need formula and will be fine with a table food diet. Be careful about this misconception as too much milk in a child's diet can lead to not enough iron in her diet. Be sure to talk to your doctor. You can also get a lot of information on proper diet for various ages through your local Women, Infant, and Children (WIC) office. They have a dietician on staff and they will speak with you or recommend classes.
