Wanting to Become a Doula...
I've been interested in going back to school to become a nurse, and some day a midwife. Well, the timing isn't right for me to return to school, so I thought of the next best option for me. Does anyone in the Dayton area know where I can take classes to become a Doula? I'm very fascinated with the child birth experience, and even plan on having my own doula when I attempt a VBAC. I wasn't able to have the natural childbirth with my first, and ended up with a c-section. My dream is to help other women achieve a drug free delivery, as well as offer support and guideness along the way. I would really appreciate any feedback anyone has to offer on this subject. Years ago I took Doula classes through Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton. The classes were free but you had to volunteer for Good Sam as a doula for a while. At the time I took my classes Good Sam did not pay doulas but it was a service they offered to patients so they would pay for doula's to be trained and volunteer there. I attended many births and the experience and training was awesome! I also used to work at Hopeland clinic in the teen program and they did pay doula's, but when St Elizabeth shut down I do not believe they moved the program anywhere else. I also did work like an apprentice under a well established doula for free in order to get alot of experience and her expert advice. I loved being a doula but did not feel for me it worked well with being a M. because you never knew when you would be called in and you never knew how long a birth would last. It was very hard to plan childcare for but I love the experience I had and the training because I have used it to help assist many of my family members including my 2 sisters in natural births that turned out beautiful! I would check with Good Sam first. Best wishes!

You might be interested in attending a La Leche League meeting. You will find a lot of support from other women who have birthed naturally, some of them VBACs. Some of the women do homebirths as well. Good luck working on #2, we are doing the same, our daughter is 20 months.

Start there....look @ the different certifying organizations and see which one you'd like to certify with. The woman that owns that site, is also a DONA birth doula trainer and I did her training. It is excellent. If you look around on birthsource, you can link up to one of her trainings. We also have a Dayton Area Labor Support group for area doulas. The website for that is...
