Walking at Museums After Sprain?

Hi Moms - I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago. Didn't need to see a doctor, thank goodness. I was actually able to walk reasonably well the next day, though I stayed off it a lot! It's gone from painful to that weird felling where you know it's healing but not quite healed.

I can do the grocery shopping, etc., but if I'm on it for too long it hurts a bit and I don't want to delay healing by over using it. But I'd LOVE to take my little guy to some of the museums at Fair Park, etc. Problem is - lots of walking.

Do you think I need to wait a couple more weeks before attempting the extended walking time, or are there enough places to sit down so I won't knock my ankle for a loop?

Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

Dont' do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My ankle is permanently sprained from the sprain that I had 4 years ago. I pushed it to much and now it will never heal. You really don't want this, I can tell you right now. Elevate it, ice it, and stay off it! I have been told by so many doctors that sprains are often times worse then an actual break or fracture.

Yeah, I think you should wait. I ignored a leg injury for month, and kept playing sports on it, etc., and it got worse and worse. I finally had to take a long break, and it feels like it's finally getting better. I should have stopped months ago.
(Don't know how the heck I'm supposed to do a triathlon tomorrow a.m. though...)

Have you wrapped an ace bandage around it? Usually if you support it with the bandage, you can do most things. (I walked around NYC for 3 days straight with a sprain and an ace bandage.) If it is still hurting 2 weeks after the fact and you have been wearing an ace bandage non-stop, you probably need to see a doctor. Sometimes sprains can be severe and/or have a small break with them.

Fair Park is not a place for a bad ankle. It is a LOT of walking and it is HARD ground. I would wait a few weeks and you need to rest or you could make it worse.

Wait! I sprained my knee 8 years ago and still collapse because it never fully healed because I didn't get to stay off it enough.

After 2 weeks you should be able to do long walks with little to no issue. For me I wrap in an ace bandage or have an ankle brace, sometimes both. You might want to go to the doctors if you have not returned to all normal activity with no issues after this happening 2 weeks ago.

You need to wrap the ankle with an Ace bandage and ice it several times a day to reduce swelling. Keep it wrapped for a few weeks icing it regularly. Tiger Balm, similar to Ben Gay, will help it to heal. When it starts to feel better start doing ankle rotations and other stretching and stregthening exercises. It's okay to walk around on it as long as it is wrapped and you ice it. After it's healed get an ankle brace, Ace makes them too, they go on like a sock. Wear the brace until the ankle feels stronger.
