Hello, my daughter(1) has been vomitting the last 5 days. It is at night and once during the day during her nap. These are the times she does a really big nursing and then lays down. She nurses, lays for a little while and then starts gagging and throws up everywhere. She is cutting 4 teeth right now so I thought it might be related to that but everything i have read says that teething and vomitting have nothing to do with one another. I know it is nothing she is eating. Already a very light eater unfortuately, but a voracious nurser, she is now eating hardly anything with all those teeth coming in. She has no fever and the loss of appetite is a symptom of the teething. I guess what I am wondering is if any of you mamas have had a similar experience? Thanx.

If you think it might be reflux, try giving her live manuka honey 4 x a day on a spoon. I havent tried it for reflux but many claim it works. Give it a few weeks and give it time to work. (you can order it online).

Hi S.,

I'm sorry to hear your little one is feeling bad. I don't have any experience with the teething/vomiting thing but I'm thinking though it might be a good idea just to check in with the doctor since it has been going on for so long. I've noticed that my daughter sometimes vomits (small amount) if she's overeaten or had a lot of water right after she ate (liquids just have a way of coming back much easier). As another mom said, it may be reflux, which may be another reason for the poor appetite (with nursing as a means of comforting). In any case, a call to your doctor might be helpful. Also, maybe you want to nurse her more often (small feeds) but cut her off if she looks like she plans on a really long feed. She could just be overeating because the sucking comforts her. I wish you and your little one well.

She may have acid reflex. My niece has that and they do not lay her down right away after eating because she vomits. You might check with her doctor.

It could be reflux. Try having her sleep propped up a little and see if that helps. Two of my triplets had reflux and that helped.

My daughter had reflux issues and would vomit at night also. Wait at least one hour after feeding before you put her down and try putting some towels or something under one end of her crib to create an angle...these things helped us. Good luck!

OMG! my son 10 1/2 mo just went through something similar a month ago! could NOT figure it out either. But HE DID have Hight Fevers. was so bummed i kept taking him back to the DR & they had done a cath i totally regret now b/c NOTHING came of it except having to hold him while he screamed!! REALLY wish i would have trusted my instict & just said no. So he was vomitting only ONCE EVERYDAY for 6 days in a row AND cutting FIVE teeth at the same time. it was right around the same time i had the stomach bug so thought it was related, but couldn't be the same cuz it was only ONE time a day for him. so eventually got reflux RX for him, but just waited a couple more days before giving it to him and it just stopped. maybe it will just stop for her too. Good luck, my thoughts are with you both!

This is worth a conversation with her pediatrician.

You should put in a call to your pediatrician. Tell them what's happening and ask the doctor to call back.

I have heard of vomitting during teething, but the explanation may be bogus. They said that when teething the baby may produce and swallow excessive amounts of saliva and this could cause vomitting.

It is much more likely that she has some bug and a low grade fever. My little one and I have lower than normal body temperatures (97.5 is normal for us compared to 98.6 for most people) so when we have a mild fever, the thermometer reads normal.

Just make sure she is getting enough fluids so that she doesn't get dehydrated. I hope she feels better soon.

Hi, my son did throw up with teething. I was told by his doctor that it might be due to all of the excess saliva that was being generated by the teething (he'd gag on it, and then throw up). You may want to check with her doctor, just to be on the safe side, but I definitely went through the same thing!

My son as I remember, used to get sick to his stomach around the time of teething. However, he never got sick that many days in a row. Is she running a fever? Does she have any congestion?

Yes yes yes! They all told me it was not teething--even when we ended ip in the ER because she was completely dehydrated. I still believe that she was having terrible reaction to getting 4 teeth at once. After five days I became concerned and we took her in. If your daughter is listless and her skin doesn't bounce back quickly after being gently pinched, and/or she isn't have more than a couple of wet diapers, I'd take her in. Sometimes they feel crappy for some reason, become dehydrated, theN just continue feeling crappy because they can't get their fluids up. Once she had two bags of fluids she was completely back to normal. Follow your mommy instinct!

My son did this when he was 11 months old. Went to the doctor and found out he had asthma. He was working so hard trying to breathe (although he wasn't wheezing or having any other apparent symptoms) that it was causing him to vomit. He was using his stomach muscles to help push the air out. Definitely take her to the doctor to find out for sure what is causing this. Also, lift up her shirt and watch her breath, the doctor showed us how he was sucking in so much air you could see it around his ribcage. Also, his nostrils were flaring when he was breathing in and out. Good luck. Not much fun having a vomiting 1 yr old especially since they don't really understand what is going on.
