My daughter got sick for the first time yesterday and ended up vomiting on her whole bed and unfourtunatly on a stuffed toy that cannot be thrown in the wash surface wash only. I tried getting the liquid out first and then used clorox cleanups to wipe off the goo. goo gone smell still there HELP. She loves the toy and cant let her play with it while its gross. LOL. Any help is greatly appriciated. The toy has electronics in in hence the surface wash only. so washing in the washer is not an option.

What can I do next?

KIDS N PETS. http://www.kidsnpetsbrand.com/ I buy it here at Krogers or Walmart. It is HANDS down the best cleaner I have EVER found between two dogs and two kids! I have been able to get dried marinara sauce out of a white tuxedo shirt and dried blood out of a pillowcase! It's an enzyme cleaner that i use on EVERYTHING. I have not found anything that it won't work on (except stains already put through the washer/dryer) and i have never had it ruin anything. I also use it in my carpet steamer. plus it even has a nice smell to it! Okay, now that i feel like the kids n pets poster child... best of luck!

Amway has a product called "LOC" which I use for all smelly messes, especially throw-up. It's one of the best cleaners that actually has a nice smell.

BioKleen BacOut or there's another enzyme that has something to do with kids and pets will work. These are enzymes that go in the fabric and eat up the nastiness leaving a neutral freshness behind. I've used many times on the couch or mattress or carpet while potty training my kids and both work great! Good for car seats and straps, too.

We have always washed all surface wash only stuffed toys in the washer. Sometimes I put them in a pillow case but not usually. I also dry them in the drye on low (the same temperature I use for wash n wear). Their "fur" comes out fluffier when dried in the dryer than when air dried.

The only time the animal did not come out looking like new was one that I bought at the Dollar Store. He came out with matted fur but he's still my granddaughter's favorite stuffed animal 3-4 years later. I think of Teddy in the same category as the Velveteen Rabbit only luckier. He didn't have to sit in the trash. :):)

I always wash stuffed animals in the wash. I think all of mine say surface wash only, but I have never had a problem. I dry them on low heat though. I figure if they don't make it, I would have been throwing them out anyway.

i've washed all of our "surface wash only" in the washing machine and put them in the dryer (low heat for a LONG time), and they've all come out fine. If the animal falls apart, well, you would have tossed it anyway.

This happened to one of my daughter's toys. We used "BAC-OUT" (with a green and white label) which is supposed to be enzymes that take away the smell. I used this a lot when I used to have a dog. It is non-toxic and can be found at any Whole Foods or perhaps Freddy's in the natural food section. Good stuff to work for all kinds of stains and smells too.

A pet cleaner may work too. Nature's miracle is great for removing stains and smells from carpet, etc so it should work on a stuffed animal. Test it on a small area first to make sure it does not damage the stuffed animal.

My first thought was to throw the stuffed animal in the trash! But I know some kids would scream for weeks without their loveys. I have also tossed some 'surface wash only' animals in the machine. I figure if it can't make it through the washing machine, then my son is not meant to have it. I just can't stand the thought of all those germs that get stuck in the animal. Yuck.

i would take out the electronics and wash it in the washer, adding some vinegar to the washing cycle. then pop the electronics back in and sew it back up. i am by no means a seamstress so my 'sewing' jobs look a little frankensteinish but my kids are just happy to have their animal back. i tell them their animal is going to have an operation and a wash and then they'll have it back. you might have to wash it several times before the smell comes out tho. my daughter threw up on a polyester tutu/skirt. i thought that because it was polyester that the stain would come out easily. wrong! it finally did but it took a lot of washings. good luck!

There's a product called ViaFresh - you can only get it at industrial cleaning supply places and janitorial supply places - but those are around if you google them. It's an enzyme that gets out anything human or animal (vomit, urine, poop, rotten meat, milk, blood, etc). I found it when I had spilled fish fertilizer in my home, and got it at a local place. It works WONDERS. I got it for the fish smell but use it now for vomit and pee, mostly.

Hi P.,
Vomit's acidic, so try a baking soda solution in water to "neutralize" the eau-de-barf.

I don't know what this will do to the color..but hydrogen peroxide is a good deodorizer and stain remover for most bodily type fluids at least on white fabrics and fuzzies. (I work at a dog grooming place and we use it to take stains out of white doggy fur..which is also not machine washable LOL). There is also a product called Odo-ban.(sp) You are most likely to find it either in cleaning supplies or in pet products (because a lot of people use it for pet odors. But its a good one because its people and pet safe. Just spray on and leave to dry I believe. Though do read labels to make sure. Febreeze is another option, but I am allergic to even the unscented stuff so I don't recommend it simply for that reason. If nothing else, you can probably mist it with just a little water and sprinkle liberally with baking soda..shake off the excess and allow to dry..followed by a quick vaccum with a hand held tool on the vacuum. That might work as well. All methods I've used at one time or another for lots of different smells/stains. White vinegar misted on and allowed to dry might work as well. Good Luck!

I have put many stuffed animals in the washer that were surface wash only. I have never had a problem. Do be carful with the dryer. We had a fuzzy little horse that I washed after being vomited on and the hair came out a bit matted, but still loved. My thought is that worse case I have to throw the animal away.

Try an enzyme-based carpet cleaning product. Most of these are designed for removing pet stains and odors, but they work on kid stains and odors, too. There are some good products available at pet stores, or I think Hoover makes a spray-on pet stain and odor remover that you can buy at the grocery store. Someone mentioned Nature's Miracle, which is great stuff.

Another thing you could try is borax powder. It's available in the laundry section, and does a great job of neutralizing most odors. Get the surface damp, then sprinkle on a generous amount of the borax. Let the whole thing dry and then vacuum off the borax. You'll probably have to wet the surface again to get the residual powder off, but it should take away the odor.

If you can take out the electronics, then do that and wash it. I machine wash all my daughters stuffed toys, even ones that say surface clean. Vomit is the hardest smell to get rid of. I just know this from experience. If you can't wash it, go buy a new one. That honestly is going to be the only way to get it completely gone. Even if you surface clean it, that smell penetrates deep into these types of things and it will never be gone.

Get some Wool-lite and wash in sink with warm water, pat down with towel to get water out, let it air dray and then blow dry it with a blow dryer.
Wool-lite is a very safe detergent. Its more for clothes that can't be put in washer, they have to be hand washed. The smell shoud go away no problem, then your little one can have that toy she misses so much.
Good luck, Mom

I always put them in a pillowcase and threw them in the washer. Let it air dry. I figured the thing was ruined anyway, why not wash it and maybe they could enjoy it a bit longer. With the electronics, if it's just an insert you can take it out and put it back when it's clean. Otherwise, I have no good ideas.

Good Luck! And I hope she can enjoy the toy for years to come.

Gross - I'd toss it in the washer - but since the electronics are key - then I'd wash as much of it out - by hand - then I'd put in in a closed cooler with a bowl of vinegar for a few days. The vinegar should take the smell out - it works for a car. I'd put a large bowl in the bottom of the cooler with a baking cooling rack over it - then keep it closed for as long as possible - at least 24 hours.

Other thing to consider is taking the electronics out - then sewing them back in but I'm not sure how complex it is.

Almost all stuffed animals says surface wash only. I have washed some in washer, and others I have soaked in soapy water. I never put in the dryer, because I figured the stuffing was the stuff that was going to have something happen to. But I found that oxy clean gets the vomit smell out the best if I hand soaked the stuffed animal. It also works on the straps of carseats if they vomit on them. You can use oxy clean in the washer too.
