Vomit on Carpet

So over the weekend my son threw up on the carpet. I cleaned up all I could and then followed that with scrubbing with carpet cleaner. After all of that could still smell it so I sprayed fabreeze. Well I've now sprayed fabreeze 3 times now and you can still smell it although not as bad. How in the world do I get the smell out of the carpet? Help! Thank you.

What can I do next?

There is a carpet cleaner and odor removed used for pets etc. At pet stores works very good plus it removes stains. I use it all the time when I clean my carpet.

I get Activ Live from a janitorial supply store. It is a foam that has live enzymes in it that eat away at organic things like vomit. Works great and has a fresh smell too.

For any residual stains (after you have cleaned up as much as possible) ~ you can test an area with a light solution of hydrogen peroxide and water. Blot with a paper towel. This can bleach dark carpet but light ones really are not usually an issue. Be sure to test an inconspicuous area first. That was what a professional carpet guy did for us. good luck. As for the smell, I would sprinkle a heavy dusting of baking powder ~ let it sit overnight.

Try OxiClean. The bottle has instructions for carpet cleaning. We have used it on pet stains with great success.

This will sound crazy, but get some of that enzyme cleaner that they sell at PetSmart intended to get out pet smells. I think it is called Natures Miracle (or something similar).

Oxyclean can potentially bleach your carpet. Whenever I called Stanley Steemer, they would try to sell me the additional enzyme treatment. Just get it at PetSmart and spray it on the spot. It even smells great :)

Before you do anything too drastic go to the store (Krogers & HEB both carry this) and buy a bottle of Incredible. It is in the cleaning aisle- usually with the carpet cleaners. Either at the top or bottom of the shelves- up high or down low. White bottle w/ blue and red writing. About $4. a smallish bottle. Soak the area with it-then blot w/a towel. It neutralizes everything. (even cat pee)

Hi M.,

I had the same problem a while back. I finally used baking soda and brushed it into the carpet. It worked well for me. Good luck its a horrible smell.

I would use vinegar on it. That is what you can use to get pet urine/poop smell out of the carpet. Vinegar is a great natural cleaner and disinfectant. Pour it directly on the spot, take a towel folded up and place over it. Stand on the towel so the vinegar and remnants of throwup will soak into the towel.

Don't be surprised that the spot "comes back" since you used carpet cleaner. Carpet cleaners leave a soap residue on the carpet. This residue attracts dirt and soil. This makes the spot look like it comes back over time.

Ecco 88 is the absolute best stuff for this. It was recommended by a friend who used it on all pet stains and "human" ones, too, such as vomit. I have used it when the cat has had an accident and it even works on cat urine smells (you have to use it a couple times on this). You can find it at smaller pet stores. It is not sold at the major chains.

Good luck.

Since it is "biological" stuff why not try a pet stain/smell remover before you spend the $$ and time on a rug doctor. It works for dog vomit. They have some great ones at Petsmart. You could also Google it. After you are finished cleaning it and the carpet is dry, sprinkle baking soda on the spot and leave it for a few hours. That should soak up any remaining odor. Somehow my boys always hot the tile or me, I never had it in the carpet. If you ever need to know, I am the Houdini of vomit soaked shirts. Gotta love Motherhood. Good Luck!

I use oxy clean. Its on the isle with the spay & wash at Walmart. Im a firm believer in it. I was using spray & was to clean stains on clothing. But a friend told me about oxyclean. It is great!! Best stain remover EVER!!!
I have used it to clean up throw up & it has worked for me.
The lady that mentioned vinegar, it is a good neutralizer. You will have to endure The smell of vinegar but it will work & the vinegar smell will eventually dissipate. People use vinegar to neutralize pet stain orders in their carpet & YES! it works.

Have you tried Renuzit Odor Neutralizer? It seems to work really well. Better than FeBreeze, at least that's been our experience. Also, try some carpet powder that you sprinkle on, leave it, then vacuum it up after a few minutes. They make some nice scented powders & seems to work well too. Good luck!!

I personally can not stand the smell of Febreze for this very reason. The memory remembers that the only time I ever used it was when something disgusting had happened!

I have two things that have worked for me:
#1 buy 409 Carpet Foam. It's a foam that you spray on the ground & then vaccuum up after 15 minutes.
#2 Use the Arm & Hammer for Pets carpet powder.

I've also seen advertised on tv a spray that you can get at Walmart that is like steam cleaning your carpet, but dries in 20 minutes. Regardless, I wouldn't use Febreze or any other spray that stays on the floor, because it just stays in the floor. These options let you vaccuum up the smell/remainder.
Good luck!

You may have to steam clean it to get it out, that is what I did. You also might want to try some of the pet carpet cleaner from a pet store. They tend to have enzymes in them that break down smells.

I am going to guess it got into the padding underneath and that is where the odor really is.. The best way to rid it, would be to pull the carpet back and clean the pad in that spot (also the back of the carpet) and then let it totally dry. If the pad will not clean well, you can cut and replace that part of the padding..then just lay the carpet back down.

A rug Doctor machine may help, or you could call a professional to come in and just clean that room with a concentration on that spot.

I make my own cleaner. I do not know what color your carpet is and you will have to be careful with the bleach, but my carpet is a very light brown and this never messed up and always left it great.

I get a cup or 2 cup measuring cup glass and add very hot water. As hot as it will get out of the faucet, not boiled. Then I add one drop of dishwashing detergent and one drop of bleach(maybe a 1/2 a tablespoon) stir gently. I then saturate the spot with it and then get a roll of paper towels and one or two towels at a time dab it until I can not get any more moisture to come out. If gunk is still coming up I may repeat until all traces of vomit are out and the water is clear. It takes time to keep drying with the paper towels but this is important to get it as dry as possible.
You are not only having to clean the vomit but all that other stuff you put on there. Next time just get as much of the stuff up and then go straight for this formula and it will be easier.
Good Luck

There is a product that is called OdoBan. It was recommended to me by a lady who works for a Day Care in the infant room. It is Multi-Purpose and kills 99.99% 0f germs... It says it is an Deodorizer, Sanitizer, Disinfectant, Mildewstat and Virucide. I bought mine at Sam's Club but it is probably available elsewhere.

It's too late for kitty litter. I put kitty litter (and I don't have cats!) on vomit right away to soak it all up. Pick up what I could with gloves. Then, put more if need be. Let the little stuff dry and vaccuum it up.

But, Vinegar, regular household vinegar. Pour it on. Scrub it in. Let it dry. You could try kitty litter on top of the vinegar? We had this problem at church. The whole place smelled. Everyone took their turn to "clean" it. But, all you're doing is spreading it around and adding perfume to it. Ugh! I took my turn. Used vinegar. Then kitty litter to help soak up the vinegar so it would dry faster? Vaccuumed what I couldn't get with my hands. Gone! (Don't, DON'T vaccuum any WET kitty litter. It will just turn to clay and spread around and hurt your vaccuum and carpet. It has to be dry.)

Vinegar by itself should work. It removes odor and disinfects (= to bleach). It shouldn't hurt the color of the carpet. But, you could spot test to be sure. But, usually vinegar helps color.

Hi M.
Try a little lemon juice - then dry- go back with baking soda and let it stay on carpet for a while- then vacumn- if that does not work- set some cut up apples around room- they will absorb the odor. But the lemon juice and baking soda should work.
good luck and blessings
