hi Mamas! I just gave my 8 yo son liquid motrin to treat a fever. About 5 minutes later he vomited it up. What is the rule of thumb for regiving the med? Do I need to wait? thank you!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well smart thinking...I knew I can count on you. I went for the tylenol and it has been 20 minutes that he held it down... hopefully he will feel better!

You can definitely give Tylenol (try rectal suppository if absolutely unable to tolerate the oral), or redose Motrin if you think he lost most of it. Proper dosing is 10mg/kg which is often higher than the label recommendation, so unless his weight is spot on to his age you are probably OK. Take his weight in pound and divide by 2.2 to get kilos, then multiply x10 for his appropriate dosage. Hope he feels better soon.

I too would go for the Tylenol.

How many minutes? This happened to my kids once or twice, I remember calling the drs office and being told 20 minutes and he's digested at least some of the meds, maybe all. But if you just gave him Motrin, you CAN try Tylenol.

Whenever you have a question regarding medication, call a pharmacist. There are even 24 hour pharmacies that you can call in the middle of the night.

i second the suppositories. they are great when medicine won't stay down, and work more quickly.

i used to have this problem with my son; he would just vomit liquid medicine like everytime. Now I give him the chewable tylynol tablets, which he loves like candy--don't worry it's locked away.

Don't know how you feel about it but there are some Tylenol suppositories that you can get. They are great to use when there is vomiting. Just use latex gloves with a little KY jelly to lube and do your best. It works.
Hope he gets well soon.

I'd stay away from motrin and only use Tylenol if his belly can take it. My oldest daughter tends to get a fever with a stomach bug and usually I just let the fever burn because her stomach can't handle the Tylenol.
