Does anyone know of a place that my daughter and I could do volunteer work? Maybe a shelter or food bank? We live in the York/Harrisburg Area.

Thanks
R.

My family volunteered at the Salvation Army in York at Christmas. They were greatful for the extra hands and it was a great civics lesson for my 12 year-old (us too for that matter)! They have things that go on throughout the month such as clothing and food distribution.

There are several soup kitchens and food banks in York as well. Second Harvest is one, I believe there is another called Helping Hands and I think there is a 3rd called the Food Pantry (something like that).

I hope this helps...good luck!

The United Way in York has a volunteering book or you can check out their website, which is more accurate and updated. Also, if you go on 1st.org, you can search by topic/etc. locate a provider/company/etc. that is of interest to you and your daughter and contact then to see how you could volunteer.

R., There is a link on Oprah's website that is www.volunteermatch.com (I think). You can search volunteer opportunities by zip code.

Look into Bethesda Mission in Harrisburg. They could talk to you about what you could do there and elsewhere in the community.

Try contacting a local church, they could probably put you in touch with people who could use help. Also, there is a grat organization called Teen Challenge, on Front street, in Harrisburg. They are struggling, and could really use the help.

There are a few places that come to mind- Daily Bread Soup Kitchen in York is one place that many people volunteer. Another is the York Rescue Mission. You could also try Olivia's House, Family/Child Resources, Local Libraries and even the Hospitals.

Hope this helps. We live in the York area so most of the ideas are from York.

When I was a social worker helping deliquent youth work off the community service hours, I went to the Volunteers of America and they helped me find opportunities that I could do with the girls I mentored (ages 13-16). Go to http://www.voapa.org

I am involved with the Mechanicsburg Earth Day Festival. We are looking for volunteers for that on Sat. April 19th. For more info go to http://mechanicsburgearthdayfestival.com

I am volunteering for the event by providing a Mommy and Me area in the Citizens Bank parking lot. I would love to have help setting up at noon or tearing down at 8pm. I have a small camping tent I a putting up and under it will be chairs for nursing and a table for changing diapers. I will also put out a table of local resources for moms, free breastfeeding and cloth diapering info. If you want to help with that please call me at ###-###-####.

Dear R.,
You could contact the York Rescue Mission in York, the Dover Economy Store in Dover, some Goodwill stores & Salvation Army stores use volunteers, and also Human Life Service in York and Morning Star Pregnancy Services in Harrisburg utilize volunteers. The last two places I mentioned work with expectant mothers (& sometimes the fathers or other family members). They offer abortion alternatives, post-abortion counseling and a HOST of ways to support pregnant women who have decided to allow their child to live. Good luck in choosing. God bless you (& your daughter) for "giving back" to the community.
