Vitamin B Injections. What Is Your Experience?

I went to the doctor with symptoms of fatigue, irritability, and the inability to concentrate. My doctor suggests Vitamin B12 injections because a blood test revealed a deficiency. I've done research, but the evidence as to whether Vitamin B12 supplements are necessary is conflicting, and accounts from individuals as to whether the supplements improve symptoms is even more sketchy. My insurance does not cover it unless I go to the doctor's office to have the injections administered, and then it will be a $20 copay each time. Have you taken Vitamin B supplements? Did they do anything for you?

What can I do next?

I had to order a formulation free of certain preservatives, so they cost a bit more than Liv's, but were affordable. I was too wussy to give them to myself, so my DH did that part for me, but it was really not very expensive.

They helped me tremendously early in my experience with multible chemical sensitivity. I got more energy, and as I recall, I also slept better for the first week after a shot. I had a dose every couple of weeks for several months. After I started getting better and my energy levels improved, I don't think I needed the shots any longer. I would actually feel excessively jazzed after a shot and sleep became harder. I discontinued them at that point.

I take Vit B12 injections - I do it myself. You can get a 6 month vial of B12 for about $5 so don't worry about the cost.

It is true that in certain circumstances Vit B12 supplements do not work when they are taken by mouth because often someone with a B12 deficiency has the deficiency because they cannot absorb the vitamin.

However, if the vit B12 is injected directly into your blood stream it will work ( you by pass the need to absorb the vitamin through your small intestines)

If you are B12 deficient due to being a vegetarian then you may benefit from an oral Vitamin - However, if you are deficient due to an absorption problem or pernicious anemia then you need the injections.

The injections do not hurt and I suggest for convenience you learn to do them yourself.

And, YES, YES, YES it helps with the fatigue -

Vit B12 helps with the formation of the red blood cell - the red blood cell is responsible for carrying oxygen throughout your body if you are deficient you will feel fatigue and run down due to the lack of oxygen carrying red blood cells in your body. This is a type of anemia, another type of anemia is iron deficiency anemia.

PS: you won't notice a difference the day you receive the injection, give it about a week to notice increase in energy

I just want to add regarding people who say that it doesn't help, the reason it doesn't help is because they are not B12 deficient. It is not a miracle energy solution - It works for people who feel fatigue and sluggish from having B12 deficiency anemia. It helps replace a vital nutrient in those that are lacking it, just like when people with iron deficiency anemia need to take iron suplements - same thing different supplement. Taking iron when you don't need it is not going to magically give you more energy!

One of my kids' doctors told me that the problem with B-12 is not getting it into your body, but keeping it there. That's why he thinks the injections are better than the oral supplements.

I have sublingual B12 and it seems OK. But I had better energy from a B12 patch that I found on Amazon (you put it on your skin).

We have not done the injections (though we could have per the doc above).

You might also want to do a genetic test for an MTHFR mutation.

Good luck.

My friend gets a vitamin B shot at least once a week.
She has so much energy that it's unbelievable.

My grandmother lived to 94 and she had injections once a week. She lived on her own, cooked and cleaned for herself.

I think there might be something to it.......I'm thinking about talking to my doctor about it just due to fatigue symptoms I have long struggled with.

I don't know anyone who has regretted getting the injections.

You might be able to check with the health department or local clinics who won't charge as much. Just an idea.

Best wishes.

My body has an absorption issue. When I was pregnant (18 yrs ago) I had B-12 injections. Actual pills/capsules do nothing for me.

I do get run down and fatigued and instead of the injections now, I take either a liquid sublingual Vitamin D and B-12 OR my quick go to are the small tablets, sublingual that you put under your tongue. I get the liquid in the vitamin department of my grocery (Market Street) and I keep a huge container of the small pills from Costco (Nature's Bounty). I take about 3 little pills at a time once or twice a day.

I can tell more difference quicker when I use the small tablets under my tongue.

My Dr. suggested this route for me and so far I have had no issues with it.

Good luck.

I take vitamin B since surgery, 5000mg per week. I was so tired after surgery and then with the winter we've had. I guess because I've been on them I wouldn't know if they wouldn't help otherwise, BUT, if the doctor says you are deficiant, you should take it.

Why can't you go buy a bottle of the pills though? Mine are soluble (however you spell it) and they are one of my better tasting supplements.

And a $20 co-pay is well worth it for you to have the energy you need to keep up with those three kiddo's of yours!! (I can only say that because I have the same :)...)

10 years ago, I had a baby and then moved several times - all within a year. I was overwhelmed and stressed out and tired. I talked to my OBGYN and she recommended taking over the counter vitamin B. I took the pills for about 6 months and felt a LOT better. I then did not take them anymore, but they definitley got me over the hump.

Good luck,
L.

The nurse's office at the school where I teach offers B12 shots for the teachers once a month, and many teachers swear by the shots, but I tried them for a few months and didn't notice any difference at all. It's probably worth giving it a shot (pun intended!). :)

I have had a B12 shot and it didn't help, at all!
My neighbor gets B12 shots and he thinks it really helps.
There is no scientific evidence that backs up the shot really working, but people swear by it all the time...
Try it once and see.
