We have at least 50 VHS video tapes of mostly children's shows and movies that I'd like to declutter, as well as a VHS player that still works. Any suggestions on what to do with them? Sell them at a yard sale, donate to library or Goodwill?
You can also try a homeless shelter/halfway house, or a facility for people with developmental disorders.
Try a local church nursery/daycare or womens/childrens shelter maybe even a nursing home or adult daycare. If they won't take them I guess Goodwill or an other thrift store.
I wish I could find an affordable option of taping my vhs to dvds... I have so many and no working VCR - - I don't want to just get rid of them, because I don't want to HAVE to repurchase the dvd or blue ray version, I'd rather have someone record them for me.
If your church has yard sales, they could sell them. See if they will have one before you give them away. And maybe a small library might want them too.
I gave a ton of kid's VHS tapes to a church nursery and they were SO happy to get them! It was a new church just opening and it helped them to start a library for the kids.
I still have many many tapes of kids movies and things we recorded. We still look for VCRs on Craigslist and have 2 tvs with VCRs built in. We arent into the DVDs as much as all you younger parents and see no reason to throw away what still works. We dont want to spend the money to buy all the great Disney shows on DVDs, and as long as the VCRs still work with the tapes we will continue to use them. Im sure Im not the only one who still wants these things. If you dont, then advertise them on Craigslist or a garage sale will work. I paid $5 for a VCR. Bought 2 from the same guy and still use one and plan to take one with me when we move in a few weeks. I also just bought a bigger tv with VCR and DVD built in for $30 to use in my sewing room when I move.
Gamma G, wish I could burn them onto DVDs. We have the combo machine that can do that but so many are Disneys and they wont copy. It shuts off and wont let it record plus it could be against the law when its copyrighted. But, sure wish we could.
well, if you were in IL I would say my MIL would probably be interested. She still buys VHS movies and players at garage sales ... she always wants a working VCR so she can still watch her older movies.
You can always copy them to DVD with a DVD recorder VCR combo. We did that to all the old ones and the kids loved it. Some of those older kids movies don't even come on DVD's yet. I say copy them and toss the original tape or keep them so they can be watched again and again until they wear out.
Otherwise you can take them and sell them, if they sell, usually they don't due to most of them being bad, worn out and not playable.
Goodwill. Probalby not much demand at a yard sale and I don't think the library would take them. I've had the same problem. If anyone knows of a way to recycle these things, I'd love to know. We had a bunch of VHS tapes that our kids had recorded sports games, PBS shows, etc. and we ended up throwing them out because I couldn't find a place to recycle them.
