Hi Moms,
I am asking this for my good friend.

She has been having vertigo.... about twice in the last couple of months.
She "thinks" it's due to stress.... as it seems to crop up when she is very stressed.
But she does not know. She went to the ER for it once, and the Doc told her it's not ear or stroke related.

She is going to see an ENT next week.
Till then, she is having another bout with it now.

If you know about vertigo or have it.... what are your experiences about the "causes" and treatments? For my Mom's friend, she gets it about every 3 months, but for her it's ear related and pretty much all she can do is to just lie down and rest. Not much else.
I know there can be various "causes" for it.... so ultimately, my friend just has to get a diagnosis from her own Doctor.

But, I just thought I'd research it for her, since she is totally busy, has 2 kids, works and hubby is not home much...

THANK YOU all. :)

What can I do next?

I have this too and it sucks when the world is spinning around you and you can't even stand. My last bout had me down for 3 days and so sick. All I could do was lay in bed. Now I just by motion sickness pills because it is the same med in the prescription. I'm sure an ENT will have more answers than the ER. Like the other poster said, she needs to stay hydrated. Hope she feels better soon.

This is something that seems to run in my family. My grandmother, my uncle, and I have had a few cases of it as well. My uncle, I know, has to watch his sodium intake in order to prevent them. When I was having mine, my mom said to be sure to drink lots of water, which I have been, and so far so good. If they are really bad she should see a specialist. My mom was driving cross country when it hit her. She had to pull over, call the police to come pick her up. When the policeman arrived, she ended up throwing up all over in the policeman's car. Fortunately, he was a nice guy, because, he was kind enough to take her to a hotel and check her in there, so she could rest. So, long story short, it is probably best for your friend to get some sort of a handle on it, so it doesn't hit her so unexpectedly.

Hi SH:
I was diagnosed with vertico, years ago, when I began experiencing extreme dizziness. I'd like to blame it on my blonde inheritance, lol but that wasn't it! If I layed on my back flat,or played on the floor with the kids, strained to look up.I'd get so dizzy. It was frightening and I'd actually get sick to my stomach. The Dr. didn't help much. Basically told me,that I'd learn to control it.Well I did. When your friend begins to experience the dizziness, tell her to move her neck in another direction. It sounds nuts I know, but what I found, is that by holding your head even slightly to either side, it stops. It's like A balancing act. This went on for a few months, and then it halted all together.I haven't had any issues for years.I don't know why it can be so prevalent, then vanish, but it did.If it was my diet, I don't know what the heck I did any different. While I don't think real highly of chiropractors, this may be one time one could have helped,as I discovered I was able to control it by moving my neck in different positions. Wish I could help more. I wish your friend the very best.J. M.

I have had chronic vertigo of varying degrees for almost two years with no clear diagnosis. BUT, I am now pregnant with our 3rd child and just before I got pregnant, I saw allergy specialists at USC who discovered I am very allergic to almost everything in the environment (no foods though thankfully). They were going to start me on weekly allergy shots but I have to wait now until after baby is born and I am done nursing because of the risk of needing epinephrine while they titrate up to my proper long term dosage.
Anyway, I clearly see a correlation with stress and I know the immune system attacks even more when you are stressed.
The doctors at USC really seem to think I have allergy related nerve damage in my ears, which is why the allergy shots hopefully will help.
I have been to many many doctors for the vertigo who tried to prescribe me so many different meds, it was absolutely ridiculous! And none helped one bit until I went the ENT's at House Ear Clinic at USC, and they put me on a special vitamin prescription of niacin (to dilate the blood vessels) and a special B complex (to help repair and prevent more nerve damage).
I highly recommend them. My doctor there is Dr. Derebery.
If you want more info, I'd be more than glad to help, but there are so many different possible causes for vertigo. I had to have MRI's, CAT scans, EKG's, Doppler tests, blood tests, EEG's, etc. to rule out things like brain tumors, seizures, heart defects, etc.
I will pray for your friend, vertigo is terrible.

I have menieres syndrome, diagnosed in 2002. Her best bet is to see an ENT and then be referred to an inner ear specialist. There is no cure for veritigo but it is controllable and manageble. Stress has alot to do with it. I have not had an episode since 2003. It can be debilitating but, with the appropriate medication, therapy and change of life style, diet and exercise, it is manageable. Good Luck.
