Vertigo - Minneapolis,MN

I have been having bouts of dizziness and vertigo lately. It seems to hit in the morning, usually if I am over-tired/stressed or a bit stuffed up. It has happened about once a month, most recently this morning. It was so bad I threw up. Obviously, I can't care for my baby when I can't get out of bed or when I do, I fall over. Has anyone else had problems with this? Does anyone know what the causes may be or provide any suggestion on how to treat it? I've tried dramamine, which helps a little bit. It was so bad this morning that I really don't want to experience it again. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Dizziness, including nausea, is the vestibular system out of balance. Sinus congestion can really aggravate vestibular imbalance. You could benefit from craniosacral therapy that adjusts the bones that are the home of the vestibular system (the inner ear). C.; craniosacral therapist at www.mamabebe.org

Molly,

If it was me, I would see a doctor and ask about Meniere's disease. It's an inner ear disorder and can affect balance and cause vertigo. My roommate had it and her symptoms started just as you described, and she started to have trouble hearing also.

Best wishes,
S.

I have had vertigo off and on now for about 10 years. The doctors have said it will come and go and it does. I just have learned to live with it. I will not get on a stool, stepladder or chair, if I am having any indication of it. I also watch out how much I look up and quickly look down. They tell me it will come and go. The first time I had it about a year, it was awful. The last few years it has been off and on and has to do with stress and loss of sleep. When it bothers me the most is when I lie down at night and I feel as if I am falling. My husband has really been a help during those times. Although, check with your doctor, as my mother-inlaw had it and it was diagnosed as Meniere's Disease. Good luck, hope it's just plain old vertigo times.

This happened to me after I started a new birth control pill after my 3rd son was born. It was the generic of the brand I had taken 9 mos. prior to his birth, so I didn't think I'd have any problems. As soon as I stopped taking the pill, the vertigo went away immediately and never returned. ANY medication can do this. Look to see what medications you are taking and re-evaluate them.

Molly - I suffer from Meinere's disease which is an inner ear issue. I've lost a great deal of hearing in my left ear and some in my right ear, I also suffer from tinnitus and vertigo. These are the 3 main symptoms of Meinere's. My vertigo episodes would be a full week in length. It was hard to put sentences together let alone drive and care for my family. My children were much younger then and thought all I ever did was sleep. Really hurt my feelings.

But I haven't had a full blown vertigo episode in 4-5 years. If you want to know what I'm doing to help avoid them, let me know and I'll share my thoughts.

Good luck

Molly, I have had vertigo as well. This is generally caused by an inner ear infection. While there is nothing they can do for the infection. Your doctor can prescribe for you a medication that helps with the dizziness. It does not get rid of it 100% but is helps ALOT!

Hi Molly! I agree with the chiropractic suggestion! I have had severe vertigo and chiropractic adjustments help me so much!
Often it's a chronic inner ear problem and that is exactly what an adjustment can help you with.
Good luck! It's one of the most frustrating and scary experiences!

I could be way off base here, but dehydration can cause your symptoms. If I do not have at least one bottle of water a day, I get extremely dizzy/disoriented and unable to focus. It can also cause severe headaches. But once I down half a bottle of water the symptoms start going away and are completely gone after I drink a whole bottle.

I just read an article about a woman that had vertigo (I think they called it positional vertigo). Hers was bad in the morning too. She lived with it for a long time and finally saw a doctor about it. After one session with a physiotherapist she was pretty much cured. Might be worth checking out.

My husband has had some severe episodes of Vertigo. He went to the doctor and they told him that it was Meiners Syndrome. I believe it's the hair follicles in your ear are acting up. Anyways, the dr. put him on medicine and that seems to really help, but it also makes him sleep-- he is usually in bed for at least 24 hours. Go to the Dr. this sounds just like my husband.

Molly, this may sound crazy, but have you tried seeing a chiropractor? We go to a doctor just off Snelling in St. Paul and she is marvelous. She has all but cured my asthma, helped my daughter with her allergies and by massaging my husband's elbow, fixed his finger which he had not been able to bend. If you want her name, contact me off line. Her sessions are $45. As far as I am concerned she is a miracle worker!

Have you been to your doctor? It could be an inner ear problem. I experienced this on two different occasions and I needed a prescription strength version of Dramamine in order to help. Or could it possibly be related to sinus problems? In any case, it might be beneficial for you to see a doctor a.s.a.p. so you don't have to continue to suffer with this.

Hi Molly,
I have had vertigo too - not fun!! Make sure you have enough water to drink. In my case the doc told me to stay hydrated and it will lessen the fluid in the inner ear which makes you dizzy. Every time I start to feel that way, I down a lot of water. Hope this helps. It will get better.

my mom has vertigo, and it is excruciating. :( apparently there isnt really a cure, but i know that there is medication you can take, whether or not it helps you right away.... i dont know.

talk to your doctor. if your doc doesnt seem to know what to do, go to another doctor or ask for a referral. my mom has said that it has something to do with the little "rocks" in your ears, i think they are actually a bone, but she has called them rocks... somehow they get out of place or something, and it causes dizziness... if you sit on your bed and drop yourself onto your pillow (as if you were passing out) or even throw yourself down on your pillow, first on one side then on the other, sometimes you can get those rocks back into place. it doesnt always work, and depending on the cause and the reason why you are getting this, it might not have anything to do with it.

also my mom has a certain type of disease that causes hers. medication doesnt really help, she ends up in bed the whole day. her doc has told her that it could cause her to become deaf in the future.

so i would really talk to your doctor, the sooner the better. a friend of mine also has a mom with this, and it has even struck her on the side of the road, so please be careful. its one of the most frustrating things i have ever heard of. it doesnt sound like something that hits so fast that one couldnt pull over, but then what do you do, you know? so i hope that yours is a more mild thing that medication can help with.

im so sorry that anyone has to go through this. i really understand how you feel. its just plain aweful.

Go to the ENT very soon! You don't want to wait and see. I now have Meniere's and virtigo but it started with an inner ear infection that was misdiagnosed and damaged my inner ear. It is an awful thing. I hope you figure it out. Best Wishes!

been there done that,

make appt with an ENT. could be "crystals" that get dislodged or it could be excess fluid "meniers" pronounced ~men ears~

my first"episode" with meniers sent me to er in an abulance. i am on daily meds. watch your salt and caffine intake. especially a combination of them.

crystals = they will teach you how to "knock" them back into place.

its not fun, but it can be maintained. youll grow to learn to feel it coming on and adjust your diet accordingly.

good luck, email if you have more questions.

kel :)

Go and see a physical therapist that specializes in vestibular rehab/vertigo. If you have positional vertigo, it is as simple as an in-office treatment called the Epley Maneuver to alleviate your symptoms.

You should see your doctor. You could have an inner ear infection...virtually painless, but can manifest with bouts of vertigo. You may also be having some issues with drops in your blood sugar. Niether of these may be the issue, but it is best to be checked out by your physician, especially since you need to care for your child. The last thing you want is to have a bout of sudden vertigo while holding your child, and fall over, potentially injuring both of you.
Good luck!

Hi, Molly! I'm sorry to hear about your dizzy episodes.......you didn't mention how long they last, but I would think that any symptom that incapacitates you for very long like that would indicate that a doctor visit is needed. It could be a simple inner ear problem that an allergy medication (to keep the stuffiness from occurring) would fix. Or it could be something more serious......please let a medical professional help you figure this out!! Good Luck, sweetie!

Hi Molly....I have gone through this before and seems to hit me when seasons change...I have been prescribed migrin in case of migraines that I seem to get with the virtigo and meclazine for the dizziness. I would suggest going to your doc and seeing if there is something they can prescribe you. Hope this helps
