Vertigo?

I feel for your poor mother! I had severe vertigo several years ago that lasted several months. I used both meclizine (specifically antivert) and the transderm scope patch. What I can tell you from my experience is that the antivert made me VERY sleepy and I was only able tro take it if I wasn't driving - which I needed to do because at the time I was working. The transderm scope patch took several more days to "kick in", but it allowed me to drive. I would give it a few more days before I gave up. the one concern for me long term with the transderm scope patch was the cost. It was extremely expensive whereas the antivert was very inexpensive. Does you mother know what is causing her vertigo? Has she been through testing to determine the cause? Sometimes it can be as simple as allergies or migraines? It is sucha crazy thing - I was actually leaning into people while talking to them without even realizing it and turning my head made me feel like I was going to lose my lunch! I was very glad to finally find the cause of my vertigo and get treated. I hope the best for your mom!

If she's used the patch before, but it's not working now she may need to return to the doctor. My mother had horrible vertigo about 10 years ago; it would come and go, which lasted for about a year. Then a couple of years ago, she started having the symptoms again - only they kept getting worse. She ended up being diagnosed with Mineir's disease (sp?). She had to finally go see a specialist at Medical City for a specialized treatment. Good luck.

This may be treated by Physical Therapy...see an ENT, and ask for referral for P.T. and find a therapy center that treats vertigo. Look up benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)on the internet. Good Luck!

I take meclizine for a fistula in my ear between the middle and inner ear. My mom also takes meclinzine for middle-ear disease.

Meclinzine can be purchased from the pharmacist without a prescription. However, I would recommend your mother visit an ENT so she can determine what is causing the vertigo.

They gave me antivert when I had it and it rocked - look into that!

You don't need a scrip for the meclizine. Just go to your pharmacy and ask the pharmacist for it and you can buy it from them. HTH

H.-- My ex-husband had a bout of vertigo that was triggered by a viral infection. Unfortunately, it lasted for almost a year! For that year I had to drive him to work and pick him up every day and he worked only 1/2 days for 6 months. What I've learned is that whatever treatment your mother gets, it may take several months for her to get back to "normal". Unfortunately, you may need to try more than one type of treatment until you find the right one. Good luck. I know that this is difficult.

It's called Meclazine and thar are several different types of meds out there for Vertigo, Menears, etc... The best thing she can do is to call her doctor which you said she is doing. Most of the time they will start with a low dose of a drug and then titrate up as needed. Hope she is feeling better soon.
