VBAC Stories - Arlington,TX

I'm getting closer to my due date and really want to try to have a VBAC. I had my first baby vaginally and my second was an emergency C-section. I really don't want to have another C-section but find myself a little scared after reading about the possible complications (I know C-sections carry their own complications also). Any stories of encouragement would be greatly appreciated!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I never came back and filled in this part! I was able to have a wonderful VBAC experience on July 21, 2010. My body did need a little bit of encouraging and I was induced that same day. My doctor was so encouraging and I probably would have caved and had another c-section if it wasn't for her. She was outstanding and I can't recommend her enough for those who are wanting a VBAC. My little is about to be one in less than a month!!

The real reason VBACs are not common is the cost of liability to the doctor and the fact that the maternity ward MUST have a dedicated anesthesiologist on staff 24 / 7. Larger hospitals tend to have the capabilities for a VBAC, whereas smaller hospitals "share" an ON CALL anesthesiologist.

As far as safety, each woman must be assessed in their own right, but from what I am told (by doctors, midwives and doulas whom I work with) VBAC actually are very safe - especially if you HAVE had a vaginal birth in the past.

best of luck!

I had a C-sec with #1 b/c she was breech. I had a very easy labor with #2 and went from a 5cm-10cm in 20 minutes after they broke my water. I pushed for 20 minutes and she was here! It was amazing!
My dr. is very vbac friendly and is in ft worth if you're worried about that.

I had an emergency C-sect with my first, VBAC with second, and emergency C-sect with third.
VBAC, according to Dr#2 carries LESS risk (in my case) than repeat C-sect. Bottom line for me was that the labor went so fast, that doc barely had time to get there and catch my baby! It was beautiful and the recovery was SOOOO much faster and less painful. Look for a doc and hospital that will do a VBAC. Most larger educated hospitals with full emergency staff (just in case) will do it. Sometimes you'll have to sign a waiver, though. Totally worth it. :)

I had 3 c-sections, here in the bay area they dont let you have a VBAC. i didnt think they were that bad.. I was up walking the same day. They cut over the same scar.. They say its too risky to have a vbac because it could tear the scar on the uterus. I dont know.. I think many people do it.. but I agree with the rest.. childbirth has its own risks no matter what

Good Luck

Most docs will not do vbacs for many reasons. If you actually find a doc to do it, most hospitals will not allow it. With many medical professionals in my family, research, and the growing number of docs and hospitals who feel it is too risky to even attempt, all of whom have the consensus "not worth the risk", I figure, why not accept their cautionary warnings? I won't scare you with stories i've been told...2nd c-section is much easier than the 1st, by the way. Either way, I wish you all the best.

I had a c-setion with #1 because of various reasons, one being that she wasn't tolerating labor. I have since gone on to have 5 VBACs with plans in the works for #6 in July. I have found that the first priority is that you have to be educated yourself. I know the reasons why I had a c-section and then I make sure that those same problems aren't occuring in the current situation. Then I have had a very supportive doctor. I admit that I do have to sign a wavier that says I refuse to have a c-section because of the previous one, but I also know that if my doc were to say that we needed to repeat a section there would be a reason behind it. Make sure also that you are patient. My doctor has said that to be successful you need to go into labor on your own, as the pitocin can make contractions too strong too fast and increase the dangers for you. Good luck !

If you want to shoot for a VBAC, don't let anyone scare you out of it. There are risks to all forms of childbirth. Do your research and make your own decision. I wish I had a great story. I have heard many, but my own VBAC didn't happen, but not for lack of trying! Find yourself a good VBAC supportive dr AND supportive hospital. There are many around that tell you they are supportive, but when push comes to shove, they really are not. Join ICAN. http://ican-online.org/chapter/search You can go to the meetings, or just join the board. You will get a lot of great info there and A LOT of support!!! Take a good childbirth class, and I'm not talking about through a hospital. Find a doula who teaches a class and then SERIOUSLY consider hiring a doula with VBAC experience. I know of one not too far from you and I bet she would entertain a preliminary list of questions. She is passionate about giving you the birth experience you want. Best of luck to you!

it is not risk why docs frown on c-section. it is $$ and time. They have to stay at the hospital if someone is in labor with vbac. A c-section has a higher complication rate.

I also had to have an emergency c-section and am trying to have a VBAC this time. My c-section was horrible so I'm just interested in the responses.
