Hi Moms
I was wondering if anyone had any tips on getting Vaseline out of hair. My 2 year old got a hold of the Vaseline and loaded it all in her hair, Ive washed it a number of times but it still looks really greasy! HELP!

What can I do next?

Dish soap and baking soda. Equal parts, repeat until it feels squeaky, even rough when rinsed, then follow up with a good deep conditioner and she probaly won't need her hair washed for a few days :) If that doesn't work, go to Sally Beauty Supply and ask someone what they have comparible to a MAlibu Clarifying Treatment...follow the instructions to a t, and follow with a good conditioner.

This is going to sound counter-productive, but to get vaseline off your hands, you're supposed to first wash your hands with some sort of oil (vegetable, etc.), then wash them with normal hand soap. Something about the oil breaks down the petroleum, but then the oil will still be in her hair. I would suggest a multi-step process:

1) Rub some vegetable oil into her hair to cut the petroleum.
2) Wash hair with dish soap.
3) If still greasy, sprinkle hair with powder and comb through, then wash with dish soap again.

Good luck!

baby powder helps to soak it up.

When my dd was 3 1/2 she put lip gloss with glitter in both her and her brothers hair. After numerous washings, I called around to see if anyone had any suggestions. I have a friend who paints and he said DAWN dish soap as it takes the grease out. I still had to wash a couple of times, but it did come out. You may need a good condition when you are all done.

good luck

Maybe dish soap would work better than shampoo? Good luck!

Hi Kara,
I understand some people have used baby powder to absorb the vaseline, then DAWN DISH SOAP to wash out. But then I would use a really good conditioning shampoo and as not to dry out the scalp.
Good Luck!

Ah I remember this well...my son did this about 6 months ago when he turned 2,the dish soap did the trick but it still took a few washings. It also took a few days, I let him look a little greasy for a day as I could only submit him to so many head washings. A good glass of wine for mama always helps too.
