Vasectomy vs Tubal Ligation

I would think recovery time would be the same if you had the tubal with the c section.

If you have to have a c-section there will be no extra recovery time. I have 4 children all by c-section, when my daughter was born i decided that was enough an had the tubal done and now i don't have to worry about having any more surprises. I only wanted 2 and now have 4. I wouldn't trade them for all the world.

I have 4 children, 11 year old girl, 8 year old girl and when we found out we were going to have twins, we decided we were done. They are now 10 months old. I was already in the hospital, had the epidural, and went ahead and got my TL. Reason is, only one hospital bill, and I was already in pain. Just added a few more day. Plus my husband had no excuse not to help with the older kids. It has worked well for us.

Okay, first the big V is an easier operation on hubby than a tubal is on you.

Second, I've heard of woman still getting pg after a tubal. It's rare but it does happen.

Third, any choice is pretty permanent. Are you absolutely sure you don't want more?

If you're are already having a c-section it might be easier just to have the tubal at the same time. That's what my mom did and she never had anymore children.

I-we chose the tubal ligation during a c-section there was no extra recovery time that I found. So far it's worked. Not to be nosy but did you have the full stomach cut or the bikini cut for your c-section. My doctor said while they had me open it took a few extra minutes and it was done. hope this helps.

i've had 3 c-sections and each one gets a little more painful and you end up needing a little more recovery time because they have to cut out all the scare tissue from the last one but the tubal won't put you in any more pain then you were already going to be in from the c-section,i know i had a little extra recovery time between my c-sections because they were all really close together but i was up and going at regular activities with my boys after about 4 days of needing help... i would talk to you doctor about what he feels is the best way to go about it but if you are getting c-section i would go ahead and have it done because from what i've heard from friends it's painful to have it done thur the bellybutton later in life..

My boyfriend offered (without me even asking) a vasectomy because he knows its cheaper and safer. If your husband wants to get it done, have him do it regardless of what you decide for yourself.

Just don't wait til you're on the operating table to make your decision. I asked if I could have it done during an emergency c-section and my doc said that she didn't recommend it without being able to talk to me more first.

We had the same decision to make...and I also had 2 c-sections. I refused to have my tubes tied..its something i did not want to do. It is considered major surgery for a women. My husband went in and had a vasectomy. Done on a Friday and back to work by Tuesday. He was sore, but had a fast recovery.

I think if you are already cut open from having the C-section that they could just go ahead and tie your tubes then. It won't be any more healing time then just having the C-section. I waited a year after my last child and I should have just had it all done at once. My niece and her husband just had thier last child and both got fixed to ensure that they won't be any more children.

I am in the same boat as you. my boyfriend and i are excepting our next child in august. i am pretty sure i'm done and he says he knows he is. so i asked my doctor about it and there are alot of side effects with getting a tubal. you don't have to have a c-secton to get one but it does mean that you have to go into surgery. and it will take weeks for you to heal and you may have pain for a really long time. when a man gets a vasectomy, he goes into a doctors office and about a half hour later he's done and then it takes a day or two of taking it easya nd he's fine again. my doctor has actually discouraged me from getting a tubal ligation. he recommened that my boyfriend get a vascetomy done if he was willing. it's just easier. i also don't really want to get it done. i'm not into the whole surgery thing and my son is now 18 months...will be 2 when the next one is born and that's alot of moving a craziness happening right after surgery. you know what's right for you. talk to your husband and doctor. good luck!!

S., I have had a TL after a c-section and I have to say that the recovery time was the same after both c-sections. Having the TL didn't seem to cause extra discomfort or recovery time. If by chance you don't have to have a c-section, I think that they can do TL with laprascopic surgery, which is not the same as "being cut open." Your husband could have a vasectomy and be laid up for a couple of days as well. My advice is, if the doc is already in there taking out the baby he could just as well tie up those tubes and save your husband the pain.

I would discuss it w/ him a lot; IF you haven't already. You both could get fixed. BUT if you do; don't do it at the same time.

IF you decide to get fixed & your breast feeding; you'd run into a problem (med's bein in the breast milk & etc.) IF you do decide to get fixed do it at the time of the c section. Would save $ & recovery time.

IF you have your husband get fixed; you wouldn't have to worry about stuff. For example: you wouldn't have to worry about the med's getting in the breast milk (IF you breast feed). I'm NOT completely sure IF this is actually true or not. But I heard it's easier & not as painful for men to get fixed.

Another thing you could do till you decide; is birth control & or condoms when you do it w/ your husband. I'm not sure what else to say. But I'd definately sit down & have a serious talk w/ your husband.

I have had 2 c-section deliveries with my 2 girls and you and I both know the recovery time, involved. Vasectomy is now an outpatient procedure. It seems like an easy decision for you, the question is will your husband agree?

Hi there my name is J.. I worked for an obgyn and having a tubal at the same time you have the c-section is not complicated at all. And the recovery time will be right along with the c-section. People who just go in and have a tubal sometimes have problems and painful recovery but it was never the case with our patients who did it during a c-section. Hope I have helped in some way..

even though i also had a c section with our last child,, i didn't feel it necessary to get a tubal at that time . also you should check with the hospital you are having your child at to make sure they will even do a tubal at the same time as a c section. i know some hospitals here in omaha won't do that. so that's not an option at some hospitals here.

my husband and i agreed since i went thru two pregnancies(last one not easy),,, he felt he should suck it up for the team. so to speak..lol. and be the one in pain for once..lol

i've heard that now days a tubal isn't as invasive as before... but i suppose that's only if you it's done separate from a c section..

Well this is what we decided to have done.. IF I was having a c- section then I would get it done.. IF i didnt then he would have it done.. I out beat him HE got it done... I am just one of those that believe that hey we push kids out then the guys can be in a little bit of pain and go have it done.. My hsband agreed with me.. HE was glad that he had it done.. HE was in pain for 2 to 3 days... IT hurt him to loose man hood then it hurting as in pain... But he is fine and things still work and so forth...

Why waste the money?
You are already going to be there. Have it done.
It will be cheaper on you since they won't have to do anything else. They can do it right after the child is born. It only takes another 15 to 30 minutes.
It is actually easier if you have it done than your husband.
I had my done when my daughter was born 19 years ago.
I had a natural delivery.
They just went through the bellybutton.

I had a TL when my youngest was almost 6 weeks old. He was born vaginally and I only have 2 little scars that are only noticeable to me. One scar in the belly button and one right below the belly line. I was only down for a couple of days but I was still able to take care of the kids. I had my done when my boys were about the same age as your children.
I have heard stories of women getting pregnant years after having them done. I have also heard of women getting pregnant after their husband has a vasectomy also. This is something to discuss with your doctor and the doctor who will preform the vasectomy and then with your husband.
I too have never heard of women having a hysterectomy due to masses from the eggs. there are other tumor-like masses that can develop in a woman and they don't know about it. I know because I have these masses and my doctor told me that they shouldn't be bothersome in my life.

I have heard by doctors that there is a 90% chance when you have a TL, you'll end up having to have a total hystorectomy within about 10 years if that long, due to complications of the eggs not being able to flow freely, it creates a mass like obstruction. If it was me I would make your husband have the Vasectomy. It is quicker healing time and he will go through less pain then you would if you have the TL, c-section or not. I hope this helps. If you still have concerns, ask your doctor what he feels the right decision would be. After all he knows y'alls health issues better then anyone else...right!!

Well I had 2 C-Sections the first was emerency and the second one was planned I was gonna have a TL with that one because of my health but in Omaha you cant have it done at Baergan Mercy because catholics dont belive in birth control and they are strict about it there. So if you are already open have it done its cheaper and you dont have to go through another procedere with 2 kids instead of one. Personally I would make my hubbs have vacsectomy too just to get double protection because I have a close friend who got prego after 13 years cause her tube grew back togther!!--A.

Congratulations!! I am in the same boat as you right now. My daughter is almost 5 and I am now at 12 weeks. When my daughter was born I had to have a c-section as well. This time around my husband and I have agreed that this will be the last. I am going to try for a vbac, but if I end up with a c-section again, then while they are in there I will have the TL done. If I am able to have the vbac then my husband will, "Take one for the team." This is our agreement, because I have had several problems since my daughter was born including indometriosis. I had abdominal indometriosis from my first c-section, and have had 2 surgeries since then, trying to figure out and fix the problem. I am scared to have another c-section for this reason. My husband understands my frustration and my terror at going under the knife again. We have agreed that it will be better for us if he can do it. We tried birth control after my daughter was born, but it made my symptoms worse. I would rather not deal with any of it again. My brother had a vasectomy, and it was very simple for him he had the procedure on Friday and was back to work Monday. The 2 surgeries I have had in the last year I took off a minimum of 5 days. A surgery for him is much easier than one for us. If I will already be opened up, then I will have it, but that is the only way. You should talk to your husband and see what he thinks. You can also talk to your dr and get His/Her opinion.

Have the TL!! I had one after my second c-section, and I felt no different that after my first. It's a very simple procedure if you're having a c-section anyway. It's definitely easier than a vasectomy if you have the c-section. Good luck.

Sounds like you got some great advice already. Whatever you decide I would make sure it was done after the baby is born. We thought we were done after we got pregnant the last time and thank God my husband didn't get fixed. I don't want to scare you, but I lost my baby when I was 19 weeks for no known reason, and we want to try again. But if he would have gone through with the vasectomy we would have been done. Otherwise I would say to talk it over with your Dr. if you haven't already.

We decided for my hubby to step up to the plate, AND I had to have a c-section! My Doctor recommended her husbands Doctor which was an awesome guy and funny! I was told since it's such a delicate procedure a very experienced person should do it! The best part....I got to watch. Then he got to walk right out when he was done. He had it done on a Friday and went back to work on Tuesday. He could have went back on Monday but I gave him a sympathy day since we get more time off!! I had a TL 4 years ago. It was preformed after my second child was born by c-section, during the same surgery. I have to say it wasn't that bad. No extra recovery time, same as with my first c-section. There is no extra incision or anesthesia. If you choose that option I would definately do it in the same surgery. As for the person who said there could be "masses" later on. I have never heard that( not saying it isn't true) and I have worked in the medical field for nearly 20 years. TL is a worry free good option if you are sure you are done.

To be honest with you... an TL is not that bad. Especially if you are already going to be cut open. I had my TL two weeks after my daughter was born... and total recovery was about four days. Your C-section recover will be more than that. I had some tenderness for a little while, but I just wore sweat pants. Other than that, honestly, it was not that bad. I would go ahead however and get it done. A TL these days, is more effective than a Vasectomy. You can play the double protection card and both have it done, but if you are aleady going to be opened up... I would say go ahead.
