Vain Question About Change in Breasts

I'm asking a totally vain question about the state of my breasts 3 months after the birth of my son. Before I was pregnant, I had small, firm boobs. Now, after being pregnant and nursing for 2 months, my boobs are really soft and a bit saggy. I can accept a change but I'd like to know what to expect. Will they always be so soft? Any chance they'll firm up a bit? I feel silly even asking . . .

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So what happened . . . I have a huge smile on my face every time I check the responses! I definitely know I'm not alone, I believe that it was being pregnant not breastfeeding that got me here AND I'm not to torn up about it! So they're softer? Who cares? But thanks ladies, I just wanted to know what to expect so I didn't go to sleep every night hoping tomorrow would be the day I'd wake up perky again! Thanks for setting me straight!

I had my first child also at 31 and my second child at 37. I breastfed them for 3 years each. I will admit, though they haven't gone back to their original firmness, I do push-ups, almost every day, usually 5 sets of 10, real push-ups, and they aren't looking or feeling so bad, and I am now 41 years old. Unfortunately, 2 c-sections, and my stomach is what will never be wonderfully tight and flat again. I love being a Mom, so it is all worth it, and, as others have said, aging will make changes eventually also.

They will not firm up, but remember too that is about having a baby, not breastfeeding. Plus it is nothing that age alone wouldn't have done eventually.

I hate to break it to ya but that is how they will be! I breastfed both my kids and after my son (who I still breastfed at bed time) they are the definition of SOFT!!!! I am not thrilled either but this is how it will be!

Ha! Ya know how when you blow up a brand new balloon and then let it go flying around the room as it looses air?...and then ya do it again and again??? If you notice, that balloon never goes back to the state it was when you bought it!!! Once your boobs have been stretched, I'm afraid they don't go back....if you want your nice firm breasts again you'll have to go under the knife! That's just how it is!!! Hey, it's marks of Motherhood....be proud of it! :)

When you breast fed your breast become soft and sags. For you to firm it up have to lift light weights to firm it up a bit.

A. I hate to tell you this, but those babies are not going back. HOWEVER you can help the sag by wearing a comfortable bra. There are sleep bras on the market. I put my old nursing bras to use by removing the underwire; they're soft and a little too big so ther're not constricting like a day bra, but they keep the girls from moving around and getting mushy. I swear it works, though mine are lower they do feel firmer underneath and not wrinkly on top.
Good luck!

Yep. Welcome to the club. Mine were cute and perky and now they are saggy and ugly. It is a small price to pay though. Just so you know, you can exercise all you want and your breasts will not lift. Your actual breast is not muscle, it's fat. Your pectoral muscles are behind your breasts. So no amount of chest exercises will lift the breast.

A., don't feel bad for a second. I went through the same thing. I went from an A to a D then a saggy D!! I stopped breastfeeding for a number of reasons and I am much happier (saner!!) and the baby (born March 13) is healthy as can be.

I recommend massaging Bio-Oil from the drugstore, wearing an attractive, comfortable supportive bra religiously - even to bed and doing pectoral exercises to raise them.

Also, as you lose weight, you will probably lose some from the breasts.

I totally understand. Looking good is important to how we feel overall about ourselves.

Congrats and God bless!

this is depressing!!!

im still not convinced that its just pregnancy that does it though. i didnt nurse my first, now i am so flat chested as it is, but after her, i think they were like before. now for my second, they look good when they are full, but after feeding, its awful. i really would rather be smaller chested than have then like they are when they are empty. oh well:)

Yep, welcome to the club, sister.
I never had much in the way of boobs before I got pregnant, but they were firm and perky. Pregnant=Anna Nicole Smith. Post pregnancy=huh? Where'd they go?
Get a comfy bra with good support and maybe a little padding. Oh, and this may be cold comfort to you, but I am now 48 and am finding that with the onset of perimenopause, my bazooms are suddenly full and firm again, especially before my period. I've even been asked if I've had a boob job, lol.
But anyway, yeah, what's happening with you is the norm, doll. Remember you're not the only woman it's happening to!

my boobs used to be firm & perky as well - 13 months of breastfeeding and they are like two deflated ballons! i was hopeful that they would return to their origional state but i stopped nursing six months ago & they are still deflated. it was all worth it though - the benefits my son recieved from nursing for so long but i'm afraid to see what will happen to my boobs after i have another baby & nurse again!! I also never had stretch marks but i was so engorged the first week that i got them and they have never gone away!!!

It may take a while but they will go back to almost the way they were, with a good bra for support and some exerecise for your pectoral muscles. Good pecs make your breasts stand a little higher and look better. I nursed five children, mine were a B, then up to a D+ and now a B again. Dont give up and keep your whole body fit, it helps.

LOL - welcome to the club A.!!

It's all part of it - buy a really good bra and you'll look fine. When you look at the big picture (no pun intended!) it really is worth it, right?

Enjoy the new you - and you aren't silly!!

J.
PS, my kids call mine "softie pillows"!! They are 5 and almost 4, so they love all that "body humor" :-)

Don't feel silly A.. :) We've all wondered similar questions at one point or another. Sadly, I was the same way though. I had maybe a middle B cup and they were firm. My friend and I used to joke we wouldn't have to worry about sagging. Little did we know when we were in our early 20's!! Mine never bounced back though and three children later and 34 years old, I am sure they never will. Just one of our many crowns of mommyhood. LOL

Hugs,

It really depends on hereditary factors. Sadly, my boobs have been pointing south since I had my twins & look like cow utters when I bend over without a bra. Scary sight! Only me & my doctors have seen them without a bra since then. =( If you're like me & miss the days of perky, happy boobs instead of sad, deflated balloon boobs, you should look into getting a boob job. Maybe you don't need implants, per se, but just a lift. I think I need to put a little "stuffing" back in mine. LOL

Good luck & know that you're not the only one with droopy boobs. LOL

I was wondering the same thing after my 2nd child was born. I was a c cup before having children. I didn't notice much difference after my first (I breastfed her), but after breastfeeding my second, I am now in the barely there B bra. I asked my OB/GYN about it and she told me not to hold my breath. They are not going to go back to their old size - they are what they are....

Welcome to the club A.. Pregnant boobs are the most awesome aren't they? I went from a firm B to what seemed to be stripper style double D's. Absolutely gorgeous, full, round, voluptuous, firm, beauties.... to deflated balloons. It seemed to happen after each baby. My advice is get a good bra and you can certainly try excercise, but there aren't any guarantees there. Good Luck.

My boobs got saggy when I was breastfeeding. I think it took close to a year to go back to what they were before. I think they'll go back eventually, just make sure while they are saggy you wear supportive bras.

Hi A.,
I just wanted to add that its not nursing that causes them to sag, its the pregnancy. I am sure a lot of moms who feed formula would agree. It stinks but it is a small price to pay, just don't give up nursing becuase of it.

Mine went back to almost normal (I'm a little heavier, they're a little bigger), but it took nearly 3 years - maybe just one year after I stopped breastfeeding. Small price to pay for my beautiful children.

I totally get it - Mine haven't been even remotely the same. I had failry small breasts before getting pregnant. I became a DD after the first. While I was pregnant they were very firm and then after nursing for only a few weeks they were a bit softer. After the second and several months of brestfeeding, I am even bigger than a DD and VERY saggy. I understand your feelings. I have actually been considering getting them altered a bit - if you know what I mean - not implants (I'm too big as it is) but getting a breastlift? I feel like my grandmother already and I'm only 32.

I wonder the same thing!! My son is almost 3 months old, and my breasts have gone through the same transformation since I've been nursing him. I really hope they will firm back up a bit, but I am trying to be realistic and understand that this may not happen :0(.

Hi A.,
I can only talk for myself but yes, when I was pregnant they were awesome (I was always a "nice" B) and they were like DDs! Now after breastfeeding they're like...well like putting pudding in waterballoons. More soft and a little saggy. Okay more description than you needed but know you're not alone. :-)

A.,

I'm 33. I breasfed all of my kids. My youngest will be five this week. Before I started having kids, I use to be a full B. NOw I am a -A. I am so flat until it's a shame. The only thing that helps me is the Vicki Secret bra with the gel pads. And I only wear that when I am going to a formal occasion (which is rare).

Mine did the same - after both of my kids. They got better while I was pregnant again. The line that has gotten me through this change is something I saw on a sitcom: "These aren't just for show! These are working breasts!"

Before my pregnancy I was a full B cup, pregnancy grew me to a C-cup, after breast feeding (for six months) I'm now an A cup. My husband jokes that our son nursed TOO well! LOL Everyone's different as I saw an article where some moms kept the large size, some went back to norm and some were smaller. ...and yes they are a bit saggier, but hey - they did their job and that's why we have sooooo many bra's on the market!

my condolences on your boobs :) i know, its so sad, i still cant believe it. i keep saying that if i only knew what would happen to my boobs and my belly, i would have worn tight little belly shirts before, and taken lots of pics! o well, small price to pay, right? also, just so you know, its not the breastfeeding that does it, its the pregnancy. its just that after breastfeeding its such a drastic change when the milk goes away that people think its the breastfeeding that did it, when really the breastfeeding just kept them nicer for longer. my only advice is to wear a good bra whenever possible to try to prevent them from heading even further south. you are young, they may end up nicer than you think. take care, and congrats on your son!
