hello fellow moms,
For Christmas I am going to ask the family for a new vacuum and I would like some ideas on the best vacuum for dog hair. Our dog, Karl, is a beagle mix and sheds constantly and my son is almost 6 months and starting to move. thank you in advance for the ideas.

What can I do next?

I have 2 kids, 2 dogs, 2 cats, a bird, guinea pig, gerbil, and a husband. Needless to say I need a good vacuum that could contend with all of that. I love my Dyson DC-17 Animal vacuum. I got my vacuum as a Christmas gift last year. I bought it at Kohls on sale and less a 30% off coupon for around $350. I had my husband wrap it up after I tried it once, then opened it for Christmas.

K.,

I have the Oreck XL and I love it. I have a golden retriever that sheds constantly and the vacuum works great. My friend has a Dyson and tried mine and liked it better. I have had it about five years and knock wood not a problem. I recommend this vacuum to everyone.

I love my vacuum...the Eureka The Boss Smart Vac. I've had it for several years and it's honestly the best one I've ever owned. I even bought one for my sister-in-law last Christmas, and she loves it too. Now we decided to buy a second one so my husband can use our first one downstairs in his workshop. It's at the top of the charts for Consumer Reports Best Buys in the vacuum category, which is why we went with this model. They sell it as Costco, Wal-Mart & K-Mart for around $140.00. It has great suction & cleaning power, a fabulous HEPA filter and vac bags that are available everywhere (I find vac bags less dirtier/messier than the kind with no bags that you need to empty directly into the garbage). The model at K-Mart is bright yellow (each store sells a different color of the same vacuum) and it advertises that it is great for homes with pets. I wish you luck with your decision! L.

I know it's expensive, but buy a dyson! I sucked it up and bought one after my son was diagnosed with asthma. We have a shepard mix who also sheds constantly. This is the best vacuum ever! It picks up so much, much more than my old one bissel. I used to have to vacuum every day after the kids went to bed (they were scared), but now, with the dyson, I can get away with every-other day, it picks up that much dog hair! Well worth the $500!

Hi there-
we dot the Dyson "Animal" for that exact reason. We too have a beagle who sheds like crazy. Now you almost wouldn't know we have a dog...except for that impressive beagle howl. Seriously, we had an Oreck before that broke and I'm glad it did because this vacuum is amazing. It is also pricey...we found a good deal at Target. Good luck!

I recently purchase the top of the line ORECK. I have five cats and have to vacuum almost every day. After years of having Eurekas and Hoovers I found this to be great. It doesn't leave any residue in the air when I vacuum and the carpet looks like new. Good Luck!

Hi K.,
I don't have a dog, but I have a Dyson and I love it! They make a special one that is specifically for pet owners. My only complaint with the Dyson is that the attachments are a bit inconvenient to use - but other than that it works great!! Good luck and Merry Christmas!

Being a mother of two pugs who both shed like it is their job, the Dyson Animal is the way to go!!!! Worth every single penny. Plus, you don't have to mess with bags. Truly the best purchase I have ever made. Keep in mind it is a bit heavy, but you get used to it! Happy shopping!!!

Congratulations on your beautiful bouncing baby boy, K.!!!! Little boys are so much fun, they really are! And they love their Momma's soooooo much! They love their Dads just as much, I'm sure, but as a mom of two sons, I know for a fact that a little boys love for his mom is very intense and so wonderful. Enjoy every minute of it. When we took my son Cooper for his two month check up, we told the doc..... he's just so good all the time, is that normal? Why is he so good all the time? She answered: "Well, just look at yourselves!" LOL! So, there may not even be any 'storm' at all. Your wee one is just a naturally good baby! You are so lucky! Cooper will be 19 on Jan. 1st. and he is still just naturally good! Always has been, always will be. It's just his nature. We've been very lucky that way with both our sons. We have enjoyed every moment of every day with them too. Oh! Read to him every day, take lots of photos and laugh often. Listen to all the wonderful things he has to tell you..... He will keep you laughing.... so enjoy! As for vacuum cleaners, I love my oreck, but that new yellow vac is also great..... I forget the name..... it has that pivoting wheel...... great suction. Good luck.
D. N. xo I just remembered..... it's a Dyson! Great vac!

I currently have the least expensive vaccumm I've ever had in my life, and it is the best I've every had. It was $30 at WalMart, the cheap Bissel (sp?) It is absolutely wonderful. Not only does it pick up the hair, but I also use the extension wand for cereal, crackers, etc that the kids drop on the floor or whereever. It even works great on the kitchen floor.

Kristi,
We actually have a siberian husky and we have the hoover nano and it works really well. I have friend that have huge dogs and she got the dyson...just the yello one..not the pet one. The pet one just charges more and does the same thing.
The nano that we bought is really doing a great job, and was only 49.00 verses....a 400.00 vaccum. But I am sure that you will get more responses, but this is mine.
I hope that this helps
Happy Hunting..and Happy Thanksgiving

Our Eureka Boss works well at picking up our Boxer's coarse hair. However, as our daughter was learning to crawl (she is now walking), we learned that she was the best Swiffer money couldn't buy, lol. Good luck.

Hello K.,
I think the best vacuum to own is a kirby.Granted it is a thousand dollars, but it is well worth it if you have children and pets.I have a 16 month old son with allergies.I swear by my kirby.

Oreck XL $400+
It works great with my 2 golden retrievers.
I have had it for more than a year.
Before this I had a phantom(fair suction)(I don't like the bagless)
Prior to that I had a Hoover that I had to open and clean the dog hair out after every use.
I strongly recommend the Oreck.

I have an Electrolux Harmony vacuum, and I love it! I have two cats, and it works great on cat hair. I recommended it to my mom and my best friend, who both have dogs (a golden retreiver and pit bull) and they really like how well it works on dog hair. It is a lightweigth vacuum, with a HEPA filter, incredibly quiet (for a vaccuum!), and has a separate setting for wood and carpet, and a special pet hair setting that grabs the put hair off rugs and hard flooring. It's not cheap, but it works great!

Kirby vacuum cleaners are the best! My son sells them and he sells them to people who own orecks and dysons.

I have linolum floors in the kitchen and a dog that sheds. The vacuum easily sucks up the hair and makes the floor look like it was mopped! I Love it!

I'll ditto all the responses about Dyson. We have two welsh corgis that shed a lot, and the Dyson we have works great. Pricey, but definitely worth it. Also, we didn't get the "animal" Dyson, b/c they didn't have it in stock where we were shopping. But the one that we have works like a charm.
