I'm looking to get a new vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter. What are your suggestions? Also, I know they are expensive...any tips on how to get a good deal?

What can I do next?

I have an Oreck and I will never use anything else. I did spend around $800 but I got all the extra bags I need, it has a long warranty with a yearly cleaning/tuneup. It is SO lightweight, running the vacuum is not longer the chore I despise.

I got mine at the Oreck store in Plano. Offer to pay cash for a discount or trade in an old vac.

Good luck

I too have a Dyson. I got a good deal on it from HSN. Love it on carpets. Still not sold on the hardwood attachment.

I have a Dirt Devil vacuum with Hepa Filter and it's bagless. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS VACUUM. Okay, granted, I bought it because it was affordable, but you get what you pay for. It is heavy. I have to clean out the canister after EACH ROOM I vacuum (what a pain!) I have never used a Dyson or Oreck but I am sure they are worth their cost. My mom did have a Rainbow and has had it for over 20 years and still uses it. I know it's sturdy and works great, but it uses water and that may be a pain too. Anyway, just wanted to put in my 2 cents on what NOT to buy.

I got my Dyson animal (now replaced with the airmuscle) on clearance at Lowe's several months ago. I paid $400 for it (also had a 10% off coupon in addition to the clearance price). I love it. We have hardwood floors and I hate their hardwood floor attachment, so I just use the regular vacuum and turn off the brushes, but also works well for carpet. Doesn't clog up or lose suction, plus it has a 5 year warranty on it.

my MIL has a Kenmore bagless vacuum and it clogs all the time and then you have to take it apart and unclog it - it's such a pain in the butt to deal with.

My mom & I have always been happy with our Sears Kenmore canister vacuums. My my has had these kind for years. I even have an older one of hers that still works (it's my backup now). They have HEPA filters in them now. They have several different models (of different colors) so you'll have to compare them to see which has the features you'd like.

They are $300+ or so. But, regardless of what kind of vacuum you decide on, you can look for store coupons at http://www.dealcoupon.com or check for deals on a specific vacuum at http://www.dealnews.com You can even sign up for alerts for when they post new deals or coupons!

I just purchased a Bissle Helix and love it! I have only had it about 2 weeks, but it sure does do the job so far. It was $75 on sale at target. I would have loved to have bought a dyson, but it just wasn't in the budget right now. Also, I saw someone said don't get a dirt devil and I totally agree! They are awful! I hope you find what you are looking for.

We have a Simplicity cannister vacuum with the HEPA filter and I LOVE IT! We have had it for several years and it has not required any maintenance other than regular cleaning and changing of bags/filters.

We found that we got a better deal going to a small retailer rather than a large department store. Small businesses are more likely to allow you to negotiate a deal and will tell you when an item is likely to be on sale b/c they are independently owned and need to turn-over merchandise.

I clean houses and use the customers vacuums so I have used many types. I have to say the one I hate the most is the Dyson. It never seems to really do a good job and it is too bulky to fit under furniture. My favorite is the Bissel pet one. It cleans very well, lays flat to go under furniture and has an awesome turbo head you can put on it to do furniture and it really works. The only drawback is that it is bagless. I hate having to empty the cups....it is soooo gross! Whatever you choose, make sure it's lightweight. Good luck!

I read Consumer Reports when I got mine a few years ago. It's a Hoover with a HEPA filter. This one has a bag. I previously had a bagless vacuum which I HATED! What's the point of a HEPA filter when the dust gets in the air and on your skin when you're emptying the bagless container? I like that the bag keeps it all contained. BJs and Costco have good deals I think. When I got mine, I googled the model #, and did price comparisons between online and local stores. Did much better online--better price, no sales tax because it was from out of state, plus free shipping. Don't forget to google coupon codes for any online store you're buying from. If not a discount, you usually can get at least free shipping. My vacuum cleaner arrived in 2 days! Happy vacuuming!

I love my yellow dyson vacuum. I have a large (130lbs) dog and it never breaks or clogs, plus I have to vacuum twice a day with it. It has not ever broken in the past five years. I dont know how much they are now, but you can always get a used one from a vaccum repair shop.

I have a Dyson. I bought it in 2004, and it still works great. I use it at least twice a week, often times more than that. We have a dog, and realized that some of our children are allergic. I can tell when I am not vacuuming enough, because their allergies rear their ugly head. I bought the extended warranty, but never had to use it. Beware there are two different types of telescoping arm; one that is attached permanently, and one that you have to attach to use. I have the first type, and my sil has the second. She prefers the way mine works.

I have a Rainbow Cleaning System and absolutely love it! It uses water to trap debris, and is a certified air purifier. It was expensive, but I would never go back to another vacuum again. My mom has had one for over 20-years and when she bought a new one (for all the upgrades), they refurbed her old one for free and she uses it at her farm. Highly recommend it! BTW - It has attachments for cleaning all floor types, including tile and wood, and it can pick up wet spills (since it uses water as filter), and they have an attachment for cleaning carpets as well... Can't say enough about it!

I have a great contact for an in-home demonstration if you are interested, just let me know!

Good Luck!

RE: good deals. I just received my Tuesday Morning circular and an email blast. In circular had a dyson for 299 and in the email (online promo, but you can buy at stores too) is another vaccum that looked really great and had all the hepa and double bags for 199, I think. They also sent a $35 off coupon. Sometimes if you tell the sales gals you forgot it they are nice enough to give you one at check out.

I have a hoover and hate it, but my house is mostly hard surfaces so I use a broom and my husband's shop vac - LOL!

gosh, i bought the dyson animal two years ago. man, does that thing work. the problem is not only it is very expensive but breaks down and there is nothing you can do. the repair costs more than half its price. mine just broke, two years later, the costumer support is useless and even though i will miss it because of how it vacuums i refuse to shell another 500 dollars for a thing that will break in a couple of years.

We have a Dyson and I just love it. I got it at Bed Bath and Beyond with a 20% coupon, plus they price match to competitor prices. You might see them on sale but not very likely. I have only heard of them on sale once and it was a black friday doorbuster.

I just purchased a Bissell Healthy Home vacuum. I've only had it for a week but so far it's everything I had hoped for. I ordered mine online from Kohls using a 30% off coupon that I had received in the mail. That was the best deal on this particular vacuum that we could find anywhere.

Good luck,
K.

I have a Simplicity SYNCHRONY that I got from Midwest Sewing & Vaccume. I don't know what type of filter it is & it is a bag vacuume (I swore I would never get a bag vacuume, but I love it more than any vacuume I have ever had).

God bless!
