Vaccinations - Pico Rivera, CA

I am a worried mom seeking anyone who can refer me to a Pediatrician who offers vaccinations in single doses. My daughter is 14 months old and is up to date on her vacs but I have been doing more and more research about the dangers of certain if not all vaccinations and I decided that I would like to find a doctor who is sensitive to a mother's concerns and who would be willing to offer single dose vacs. I know most homeopathic doctors offer these options, but they take only PPO insurances and do offer a cash option. Any other moms out there who share the same concerns about vaccinations and if so, where have you taken your kids to get there shots?

So What Happened?

I'm amazed about the volume of responses I received and I couldn't be more appreciative to you lovely ladies who cared enough to pass on your opinions, helpful information, and also support. God bless each and eveyone of you! At this point, I am most fond of the readings on Dr. Jay Gordon's site and hoping I can visit his office. After reading more on the site, I have also decided against the MMR vacine altogether. As far as the scheduled vaccines due at her 15 month check up I have yet to decide if she will get those as well. Thank you all so much!

I'll certainly second NO VACCINATIONS. I've seen children get very sick, heard/read about children dying and/or going in to a coma.

Here is a book for you to read BEFORE you vaccinate: The Santicty of Human Blood: Vaccination is not Immunization.

PLEASE read it first. You will be appalled. You can also email me if you want.

R.,
Dr. Lauren Feder is a homeopath and MD and I believe she offers single doses. Dr. Paul Fleiss may offer single doses too. He's my pediatrician. (We chose not to vaccinate at all). He recommends them but accepts patients who choose not to vaccinate. He's in Los Feliz and Dr. Feder is in LA on Wlishire.

I did not vaccinate either of my sons, but on top of Dr. Sears I believe Dr. Pam Middleton (Costa Mesa) offers alternative schedules and single dose vaccines. For more research, in case you haven't read them, are books and DVD's from Dr. Jay Gordon in Santa Monica and Dr. Lauren Feder in Los Angeles and of course Mothering magazine!! They are both super-star pediatricians! Dr. Feder will be speaking on vaccinations in June at Belly Sprout/Bloom in Fullerton (www.bellysprout.com).Good luck!

I believe your question was about where to take your kids to get single dosed vaccinations. You were not asking for an inquiry about why you feel the way you do about vaccinations (Joanne I). As you can see this is such a hot topic, and you will run into people who want to make you feel less than for believing the way you do.
To respond to your request... I do not live near you so I don't have a pediatrician to recommend but my advice is to tell your pediatrician what you want. Be firm. It feels a bit uncomfortable at first but just remember, it is your choice, not theirs. You are the mommy, you call the shots. If they won't do as you request then ask them for a referral to someone who will that takes your insurance. My pediatrician is PRO-vaccination as most are, and I simply told him how I felt and that no matter what resarch I did I was not going to 'come around'. My gut was telling me something and I was going to listen to it. He reluctantly understood and changed his tune. I did not have to go to another pediatrician. I have delayed certain vaccs, spaced them further apart, skipped some altogether, wont do some ever, and we dont do several at once. Good luck to you. And remember listen to your gut!

i have always felt exactly the same way! unfortunately for me i chose to listen to a bullying pediatrician and have regretted the decision ever since. both of my children are healthy, thank god, but i am not willing to take the chance again. my friend recently told me about advice her pediatrician gave her. they do not have any insurance so they utilize the county hospital program and her daughters regular pediatrician told her that county hospitals as well as clinics offer them in single dose as well as w/o any preservatives. i have not needed to vaccinate recently so i cannot verify this but its definitely worth looking in to. good for you for educating yourself on the dangers of vaccinations! the more we know the better we are prepared to protect our children. good luck!

my son's dr was great that way, but he died recently!! go figure. but here's his legacy...he believed mom knows best! he would prescribe antibiotics and tell me to decide whether to get them or not. you march into your dr, a decent one mind you, and say flat out that YOU WANT single doses. no questions, no arguments. this is your child's health and you be in control!!! don't look for a special dr. just demand it! it shouldn't effect the insurance that much. you're still getting the same amount as every other child, just on more than one day. figure you might have to do a co-pay or something each time, but that would be worth it!!!!
stay strong and stick to your beliefs!!!!!

I am 32, as well and never been vaccinated - oh, and has never needed even an antiobiotic, so it does happen. None of my kids have been vaccinated either...or had any other drug in their system. If you want to continue to vaccinate, then maybe contact Dr. Bob Sears in Capistrano Beach. He would be your best bet. Good luck.

You are so valid to be cautious. A very good friend of mine has a 10 year old with serve autism along with other things. Anyway my friend now has a 19 months old and she has all of his vaccinations given in single doses just in case, since there is no way to really till how her daughter got her disabilities. We have the same pediatrician and he is wonderful! He really listening to moms and is very supportive! It helps that he has a 2 and 10 year old,so I think he understands. So keep looking and you will find one that will give single doses. I'm not sure where you live, but if you live in the CA desert let me know.

Hi R.,
I don't have any names for you other than Dr. Sears as I'm fairly new to the area and would love to see the reponses that you do get. I am on the same page as you though regarding vaccinations. I'm a 42yr old mom of a 5 & 6 yr old, I'm also a fulltime RN. I waited until both of my kids were about 14-16months old prior to vaccinating and even then I only gave them DTP to cover diptheria tetnus polio pertussis.(mostly for the tetnus and pertussis)As I have a friend who had a child develop "autism" right after the MMR my children will never get it. Bless you for not being cattle herded and educating yourself on this topic. You and only you are your childs advocate.
All the best,

my dr. is accepting of other vaccine schedules. she is at huntington medical plaza on california and raymond. dr. solomon. she is young and "by the books" but will do the single vaccines and will accept hmo.

the book i'm reading about vaccines is called "the vaccine book" by william sears. and it has a lot of great info on vaccines. i would recommend reading it and coming up with a vaccine schedule that you feel comfortable with.

the dr. will tell you, you will have to order your single shot vaccines from an phamacy before you visit and bring it in with you, it will cost you more money this way, but in my opinion it's worth it.

I think you need to do more research yourself on the subject. Homeopathic Doctors don't give children vaccinations the same way a medical doctor does. Homeopathic treatment is totally non-toxic. One should have major concerns on the subject, vaccinations are neuro-toxins, some childrens bodies can handle it and don't have visible symptoms, some children have symptoms but parents are unable to percieve the symptoms. Some children have fevers, seizers and some go to full blown autism. If you are feeling concerned for your child then go with your gut feeling on that concern and don't do anything until you are sure. Once a child is damaged from vaccines there is no turning back. This is not about saving money, this is about having a normal life with your kid.
Dr. William Sears in San Clamente would probably do that for you, I believe he uses vaccines that are mercury free. Remember that mercury is not the only toxin in the shots, it is a cocktail of toxins that your childs nervous system has to deal with. By the way, non of my children are vaccinated and I know many that are not vaccinated, all are healthy and thriving.

I have the same concerns so fortunately our pediatrician has respected how we feel about it, although she disagrees with us and doesn't hesitate to tell us so. However, she is willing to wait on shots or split up the MMR into 3 separate shots if that's what we want to do. I suggest you call around and find a doctor who will respect your concerns and is willing to work with you. They are out there. Our pediatrician is not homeopathic, but is apparently sensitive and open-minded.

You should look for an Osteopath. They are Doctors, went through all the same med schools, testing, creditations, etc. The difference is that they look for natural remedies before turning to drugs. You can find them in regular hospitals and doctors offices so there shouldn't be any special billing or insurance practices. Just look for D.O. after their name instead of M.D.

I would think any doctors office would have single dose vaccinations. I mean what if your child had missed one and didn't need the others...
Also I think trying your health department in your area would be a good idea. They might have the single doses there.
On another note, I think all moms worry about vaccinations and some vaccinations is better than no vaccinations.

R. - i received a number of private emails from moms who feel i was saying that you are a bad mom, and being critical of your parenting choices. for the record, it is obvious that you are a caring and contientious parent. i was truly curious about why parents would choose not to vaccinate. i was called every name in the book and basically told off in not very nice language. all via private emails, of course, since people like that are cowards. i guess there is not room on this board to ask questions that are construed as critical of other's opinions. i think that is a kind of facisism. and it's really too bad.

there are a couple of families at our school who feel similarly. i will see what i can find out for you. if you don't mind my asking, i am curious about why you object to vaccinating your child? although there are risks from vaccinations, they are quite low, compared to the devistation wrecked by polio, measles, etc. i'm pretty happy my children will never have to have chicken pox or mumps, among opthers. i know some people believe the vacs cause autisim, but that is not accepted by the scientific community nor by the leading autism associations (altho some in the autism community don't believe that, either). i guess what i don't quite get,is which illnesses are you willing to potentially let your kids get in trade for not vaccinating. so far, i've not been willing to trade. i've yet to let my daughter get the new vaccine for hpv prevention, but i'm considering having her get it at some point. i'm really glad we did chicken pox, although it was new when we did it. anyhow, i hope you don't mind my question. it's a topic i've thought about a lot and am curious about the mindset of those who wish to be selective about their children's vaccinations or forego them altogether.

I think you are right to be concerned. In Europe they do not give shots for the first 2 years to some who want that. That way the baby is stronger, larger, etc. I think it is a system that works well. Tell your doctor what you want, not the other way around. If they don't do what you want, find another doctor. They are not the last say, you as the mother are.

Hi,

Not sure where you live, but I have a wonderful pediatrician. He supports vaccines, but we opted for single dose ones and opting out of some of them (i.e. Hep B) and he's been fine with us.

He is in Beverly Hills and they take Blue Cross if you have it. His name is Dr. Ephron, and is with two other Dr.'s.. Dr. Klausner and Dr. Waldstein. The number is ###-###-####.

I too am very concerned about vaccines, it's difficult to know the right answer and while I did start my 3 mo old daughter on some of them, it is unnerving wondering if we are making the right decision.

Just a point to note... If we all didn't immunize our children then all of these disease that are in the third world countries would come back to USA. Right now we have what we call "heard immunity" so if a few children aren't immunized they are protected by the others that get immunized. With everyone comming into the US who knows what we are being exposed to. I think everyone should do what they think is best for their child. I also think that there are a lot of immunizations out there that can wait. My boys aren't caught up on their immunizations, but I appreciate the parents that keep their children caught up because of the "heard immunity." Just here in Las Vegas we had an outbreak of MUMPs which can cause sterility in boys amongst other things, so the heard immunity didn't seam to work here.

I have a two year old and have been conservative about vaccines from the beginning. He is pretty much up to date, but I did wait on several things until he was 1 year old. Also, I had the MMR separated. I have an HMO health plan, so check with your doctor. For the most part, he or she may tell you that you're not following recommendations, but the fact is, she is your daughter, not the doctor's. Also, I had to be a little persistent, but my doctor's office did accomodate my requests. I hope this helps. Let me know if you would like more info.

R.

P.S. I forgot to add this....I use homeopathy whenever possible. There are homeopathic remedies to assist with eliminating any toxins that stay in the body after the vaccines have been administered. My personal preference is a homeopathic practioner since herbs can be too strong for infants and babies.

I think you are right to be concerned. Before 1988, the rate of childhood autism was 1 in 2000, now it is 1 in 160 children. The difference is that in 1988, doctors started giving combined immunizations and using a mercury based preservative in their vacinations. Many people think it is the mercury preservative that caused the problems and it has since been taken out. Other people point to the mmr shots, and recommend that parents wait until after the age of 3 to give these series of shots.

We have been really concern about this matter. We have a 9.5 month old baby. We did a good research and talked to a really good naturopath. Er decided to make our own schedule. We talked to our pediatrician and although he disagrres with us he has been respectful about our decision. We have split pretty much all the shots and have them spread out through time. So far we have given our daughter only two of the vaccinations, we did the HIB and the one for meningitis, these two because she goes to daycare everyday and she is more susceptuble to these ilnesses.
I found a really good book that was published just last year, so is really current and was written by a pediatrician. It offers some options for arents who decide to delay the shots:

I go to Dr. Pascua at Medical Arts Center in Wahiawa. He's pretty good about issues like this. I didn't give my 6 month old all his shots at once. I have to go back for 2 more. Also read "The Vaccine Book" by Dr. Robert Sears. It really explains how to give your baby shots and when and how many. The doctor shouldn't refuse your request, since not all shots have to be given at once. It's dangerous with all the aluminum that's in the shots to give them all at once. It tends to have a higher aluminum content that could be toxic. Let him or her know that YOU KNOW whats' up with the shots, so they don't think of you as paranoid or a mother who doens't know her stuff. I hope I made sense.

Visit Mothering Magazine's discussion board. It's a "natural family living" mag and they have an active, knowledgeable anti-vax board. If you visit their "Tribal areas - Ca/NV" page you could post and ask if there are vax friendly pediatrician's in your area.
http://www.mothering.com/discussions/
Also visit Holistic Moms Network and see if there is a chapter in your area. If so, ask them, they should definitely know whose good with that and who is not.

My son got a few then I stopped them at 4 months and resumed when he was 5. So I guess I'm in the "delayed/selective" camp. My daughter (now 3.5) has only has 1 (I waited till she was 2) because I was going to travel, then I cancelled the trip so as not to give her more. I do have a pediatrician who is willing to work with me and that's the key. Ask your friends. Good luck.
