Vaccinations

I am looking for information on the MMR and Varivax vaccinations. My daughter just had here 1yr shots and has been sick ever since with a low grade fever, irritability, and sleeplessness. I took her back to the doctor and he was not concerned in the least. He stated that a fever can develop 7 to 10 days after the shots and continue for a month!!! She had a fever the very next day. I am at a loss. I have been giving her IBprofin and tylenol everyday to keep her comfortable and don't feel like she should have so much medicine. Has anyone had this problem with shots?? I didn't think that having my child vaccinated would make her sick everytime. I feel like not getting it done. Can anyone give me some insight? HELP!! Thank you.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

I just wanted to thank everyone who helped me. I received an overwhelming response. My daughter's fever has let up for now but it has been a very scary thing to go through. I am going to continue to research the subject carefully before making anymore decisions on vaccinations. I never imagined it was such a big subject.

Thanks again!!

That is a classic vaccine reaction. That makes me so mad that the dr's just blow it off. Vit c would be a good thing to give her. I would hesitate to keep giving the tylenol and ibuprofin. that is hard on the liver. http://thinktwice.com/mmr.htm here is some info on reactions (scroll down)

You are doing a great job trying to keep her comfortable. I have a daughter that had the same problem and the thing I had to remember was to try and strech out the med just like the other mother said because the fever is what is going to fight off what ever it is from the shots. As long as it is long grade like she said just try and hold off a little to let the fever do its work.

If I had it to do over, I would not give my kids all the vaccines. I would give them only the critical ones and would do them when the baby is older. Vaccines have some poisons in them that can affect the child like you are seeing.

Good luck,

Be sure your case gets reported to the department of health. When my husband received his MMRs as a baby, he literally passed out. The nurse told his mother everything would be okay, but it was just 7 years later he had visible symptoms of Crohn's disease (a scary immune system disorder). I would recommend finding a reputable homeopathic doctor - that's someone with an OD, and possibly even a really good acupuncturist. I know of a good OD, Dr. Remington in Provo,UT, but hopefully you can find one closer. I personally took a lot of thought and study into whether or not to immunize my two children and decided against it. I greatly sympathize that perhaps you didn't have the chance to do that before this happened.

On that note, there are a lot of books out there, one that I read is "Vaccines: Are They Really Safe and Effective" by Neil Z. Miller

I think he gets a little upset in his book by what he finds in his research, but he gets his point across. Another that I found on Amazon is "The Immunization Resource Guide : Where to Find Answers to All Your Questions about Childhood Vaccinations" by Diane Rozario, and Midwest Book Review says:

"Now in a completely updated and expanded fourth edition, Diane Rozario's The Immunization Resource Guide: Where To Find Answers To All Your Questions About Childhood Vaccinations continues to be a complete, single volume reference for parents concerned with providing their children with appropriate medical services. Included are reviews of more than ninety books covering virtually all aspects of childhood immunizations; detailed listings of more than 130 vaccine and health organizations, periodicals, and publishers; coverage of such issues as vaccines and the immune system; international travel; a history of vaccination; how to report vaccine injuries; the DPT vaccine; obtaining legal exemptions; new generation vaccines; and vaccine adverse reactions. The The Immunization Resource Guide is superbly written, outstandingly presented, "parent friendly" compendium of information and resources, and a very highly recommended addition to any family, health clinic, medical center, or community library parenting and health/medicine reference collection."

I haven't read this one but it sounds very good.

Take your time to decide. You can always go get shots for your child, it is much more difficult to undo the effects as you have found.

Generally the department of health provides waivers for immunizations, the only requirement I have found is that you will be told to keep your child home if there is an outbreak (which any sane parent would do anyways).

I think the hardest part of this for me is the many people I meet who disagree and some are ready to fight me on it (usually family), but I stand my ground because I have taken my time to study it out and come to a certain conclusion in my mind and also to pray about it. Good luck to you.

Hi there, I completely agree with you, I ommitted the shots altogether, I do not want to scare you, because as a mom, the welfare of you child is the most important thing in your life.
My neighbours grandchild got very ill following the mmr shot and eventially passed away after a week, the docters swears hihg and low that the shot has nothing to do with her passing, but she was a very healthy baby before that had hardly had a cold, the family sued the docter, they settled with the family, but since then there has been allot of issues with that shot, kids who ended up metally retarded from it, parents keep quiet because what is you word against a docters, and there is many children who has this shot and have no side effects. We are a very healthy family and try to eat and live the way God has intended it and vaccines is a bunch a chemicals that we do not need in our bodies
There is book out, if you want to know more, it is called
Natural Cures by Kevin Trudeau, this guy has uncovered allot of stuff , this book is in all the book stores, it is very interesting and very shocking at the same time, but anybody who value the lives of their children should read this, because they are a gift and we should do our best to keep them healthy.
I would go to the health food store and see if there is anything they can give her, but hang in there,my niece had the same reaction with that shot and she was fine after a week and half, that was 7 years ago and has not have a shot since then and is doing great.

M.,
I know that you can find info to support any opinion and what do you believe? Obviously starting with moms on this website was a great idea. My personal opinion comes from a horrible experience with my own son. It was not his MMR but his DTP that made me stop giving him shots all together. He developed Infantile spasms which is a severe form of epilepsy which can cause brain damage. An immunization could have been the problem. It is so scary! I never ever considered NOT giving him shots until it was too late. Anyways, if I were you I would start with the CDC website first. They are obviously pro-immunization but if you read the risks. . . even they can't deny that immunizations cause horrible thing in "a small percent" of children. Well, when you child could fall into that "small percent" you take it pretty seriously. Good luck on your journey to the right decision for your child!

If it were my baby, I would get a second opinion from a recomended pediatrician and quickly. I have never heard of a fever lasting more than 48 hours after a vaccination. Here are a couple of official links for you to check out-as you can see, your baby's reaction would not be considered normal according to the CDC and they should know.

I had a very similar experience with the DPT shot. My second baby had a bad reaction to the first one and the doctor acted like he just happened to get sick at the same time and a fever (104) was no big deal. They were unconcerned and acted like I was silly for questioning it. He got the second round and had the same (but worse) reaction. That was his last vaccination. I know this is not supported by everyone, but I plan to to vaccinate until his body is bigger and better able to handle the shots. Here is what I think about the entire issue. It is completely fear based. The pro vaccine people make you feel like a terrible, irresponsible parent if you don't vaccinate because of the danger your child is in. The anti vaccine people make you feel that you will risk major problems for your kid if you do vaccinate. All of them use fear, making it a challenge to get good info. Each parent needs to make their own choices and not be judged. It depends on where you live, where you visit, your child's reactions, etc. Don't let people guilt you one way or the other. The library is FULL of books on the subject. I have chosen to pick and choose vaccines for my kids and do an alternative schedule and will never do multiple shots at a time, even when the nurse makes a comment.
