Vacation Spot for the Week After Christmas?

This past year we gave our kids a vacation for their big Christmas gift. They all loved it so much that they want to keep that as a tradition and go somewhere new every year in the week or two after Christmas. This past year was a cruise, so we can't do that every year, but we want new places.

The kids really want to go to NYC, but my husband doesn't want to go when it's that cold...and I can't argue too much with that.

We live in the DC region, and want to be able to drive this time, but I think my husband wants somewhere warmer. We did have done Orlando, Atlanta, Myrtle Beach, Outer Banks, VA Beach, etc already. So I'm wondering what other locations further south from here would be fun trips for the kids, not break the bank, and be within driving distance (10 hours or so from DC).

Or even if we did have to fly...what other beach areas in Florida would be warm enough to spend time on the beach in December/January?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the great suggestions!

We did look into another cruise, but don't have the money for the downpayment for 5 right now. So we'll save and do that next year.

I am really warming up to the idea of the Tampa area - we have never done western Florida, so that would be new!

I would LOVE to do Charleston. My sister lives right around Greenville which is only an hour away, so we'll do that one time when we visit her. But that's also a great idea!

Florida, Tampa/clearwater/Mediera etc.. it is all right there. We stay in Pinellas Park with my parents every March. This is a very nice area.

Or Smoky Mountians (but that would be more perfect in the fall if you ask me) . If you do this, becareful where you get the cabin, some of the roads get impossible to pass and are very steep, but extreamly beautiful

A cruise might be good this time... because of the problems, you might get a really great deal.

You might consider going to the Tampa/Clearwater Beach area of Florida. Beautiful gulf coast beaches and you have Bush Gardens in Tampa that you could easily spend two days enjoying. My other thought was Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg TN area...beautiful area with the Great Smoky Mtns and lots to do. Many people rent cabins there.

Fort Lauderdale/ Miami is typically warm enough to be on the beach at that time. If you're up for it, the Keys are a BLAST! You could fly into Miami and drive an hour South to Islamorada or Key Largo.

St. Augustine is beautiful, but there is no promise of warmth at that time of year.

Driving 10 hours south of DC gets you into North Florida, I think. It is 15 hours from Ft. Lauderdale to Richmond, VA (did that drive twice a year for 6 years in college and grad school). So... shift everything "north" by two hours and you will find yourself around the Daytona/ North Palm Beach area.

My husband and I went to Indian Rocks Beach, FL (Pinellas county) for our honeymoon. It's west of Tampa on the Gulf of Mexico, near Clearwater. It was beautiful. We rented a ocean front house for very little money (cause we were BROKE back then). We went to Busch Gardens in Tampa for a day, spent another day at the Florida Aquarium (great!), went on a couple of harbor cruises, etc. The food was to die for, esp if you love crab and seafood. We want to go back and take the kids soon! I think they would have a blast.

There's always Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg ... Busch Gardens is decorated for Christmas still and I hear Colonial Williamsburg at Christmas is GORGEOUS! I know it's not warm, but with the indoor water park, you could have the best of both worlds ...

I would fly non-stop to Fort Lauderdale or Miami, rent a car, and drive down to the Keys. Hawk's Cay is very fun for families. The drive through the Keys is neat too.

The only downside is that is a busy time of year for the Keys.

We had a warm Christmas this year here in southern Florida, but some years it is quite cool during that week (but certainly warmer than DC).

If it MUST be a driving trip I might shoot for St. Augustine, FL or the Tampa/St. Pete area as someone else mentioned. Still dicey on the weather though.

How far is Key West? If I am going on vacation in Dec I either want to go skiing or to the beach. Maybe check out a cruise I bet you could get one of those without breaking the bank. Right now I bet they would even up your room for free if you were to ask them.
