So What Happened?

Well I put a call in to my Dr and they called me back, and its a no to both she said definatly not on the Retna A, which luckly I haven't used. And she said there hasn't been a lot of testing done on the Differin Gel, so they don't know the effects but not to use it either, I have used it a couple of times but she said I will be fine, still makes me nervous.... Man there is just so much to think about all the time... Thank you for all your advice and support....

My dermatologist did not allow me to use either of those meds while pregnant. He was ok with oxy or clearasil though.

I asked my Dr. about ProActiv and he wouldn't approve it without knowing what was in it. He said I could absolutely not use anything with Retna A or Retnoid in it!

Hello!

When I was pregnant with my son my face broke out really bad. My sister in law told me about a facial soap to use. You can buy it at walmart. Its called PURPOSE. Its in a blue box. Its a bar soap. Like any other acne treatment its a 3 step process but I never did that, I just use the bar soap because my face is very sensitive to astringents and lotions. I noticed a big difference within a few days. The soap is only like $4 and its a big bar. I use it everytime I wash my face and I've never had a problem with acne since. I hope this helps! Good Luck!!

Sincerely
G.

My Dermatologist said no you can't use these products. You might ask your derm or your ob/gyn. I would steer clear of any vit. A derivatives.

I know that you cannot use retina! I don't know about the differin. Whatever you put on your skin is absorbed into your blood stream. It is as if you ingested it. I would recommend a natural/botanical treatment. There are some great ones available

I remember my doctor said no retna A. I would only use over the counter stuff when you are pregnant. No lunch meat, soft cheeses, mercury in fish etc. When in doubt call your doctor and ask to talk to the a nurse. Better safe than sorry on this one.

Apple Cider Vinager! Dip a cotton ball in and wipe it on your face. It acts as a natural antibiotic. Now the smell it pretty bad and being preg. you might not be able to stand it. But it works.

You might also try an egg white mask. Lightly beat the egg whites and smear on your face wait about 10-15 min and rinse off. It will tighten your pours.

Hope these help

I was told not to use Differin Gel or Retna A. Make sure to ask your doc. about Proactive or The Acne Free Line as well. My skin was horriable with both pregnancy, my doc. gave me a topical medication for my acne but forget the name of it. Good Luck.

You definately want to ask your OB about any meds (topical or oral)you are taking while pregnant. I have used both of those meds in the past and they left my skin red and peeling a lot. I finally gave up prescription meds and started using proactive. It cleared my skin up in one month and that was 4 years ago. I no longer ever worry about the unpredictable breakouts....Yea!!! Hope this helps!!!

well, not knowing any better, i did with 2 out of 3 of my pregnancies and they are 11 and 8 now and it never caused any problems to them. i wouldn't use it pregnant, but if you already have, don't worry about it. it's mostly a precaution anyway. you don't absorb enough through your skin to affect much internally anyway.

No, don't do either of them. It's not worth the risk to your baby. I had terrible acne when I was pregnant, & you just have to put up with it. Mine did go away once I gave birth.

I used to work for a Dermatologist and I know that "most" acne meds are very harmful during pregnancy. I would HIGHLY recommend talking to a Dermatologist before taking any acne meds.

Good luck!

Hi A.. I wanted to respond because I have used both of these topical medications for acne, and am currently on Differin gel. I'm certainly not an expert but have asked my dermatologist this question on many occasions, and he always says that it is best for pregnant women to not use these meds--obviously to be safe for the baby, but also simply because your natural hormones take over and you never know how your face will react. However, he also indicated that topical meds aren't necessarily dangerous for the baby, like taking pills would be. So I guess my best advice would be to check with a dermatologist before trying to use them.

I know anything with Retin A should be avoided during pregnancy. An overabundance of vitamin A in your body is not good for the baby. I can't remember what birth defects (if any) it puts you at risk for. I just know it should be avoided if possible. Most acne meds have not had enough research done to know if they are safe to use during pregnancy or not. Just be very cautious!

My doctor told me NO - Way when I asked about Retna A. He is the one that also suggested Proactive .. I have used it for several years now and I love it. I use to use Differin gel but I hated that it dried my skin out so bad. Just a thought / suggestion if your doctor tells you no... The only down side to proactive is that once you start using it.. your face gets "addicted" to it. If you stop you will break out. However, my doctor said that most anything you put on your skin will react the same way.. hope this help!
