I have just started feeding cereal and veggies to my 6 month old abuot a few weeks now. Yesterday, i gave her bananas with mixed grain cereal. she was eating fine. we ended up giving her a whole thing of gerber bananas stage 1 in the plastic container. she loved it. well i think i am paying for it now. she had a stomach ache all night. she only slept 3 hours and got me up almost every hour before that. could a stomach ache be a sign of allergies or was it just too sweet ?? or acidic?

What can I do next?

It's CONSTIPATION..and it sucks not just for you but for their little behinds, I went through the same thing with my son the doctor said to water down the bannanas B4 putting them into the cereal and use single grain like rice or if she's a big eater as is my son then oatmeal should do just fine. I tried just the cereals and noticed that the multi grain gave him constipation as well...Hope this helps.....next to invent...Sleep in A Box (I Wish)....

Hi J.,

I would not think that this is an allergy. Because of the potasium in the banana babies get "backed up". I makes it very hard to poop. If this is the first time you are feeding her fruits my pediatrician recommended pears because they are the easiest to digest. I would try that and see how she does, then try bananas agian but only give her like 1/2 the container and see how she does.

Could the bananas have made her some what constipated. If she hasn't really had bananas before it could have stopped her up since that is what bananas are good at doing. You may try talking the symptoms over with her pediatrician.

Read mine!.... I say it was just too much. Not that I should have anything to say after what I have done but I guess I may have learned from my mistake. Ask your doc he/she will give you the low down on food introduction.

It could be just that your child isn't ready for this particular food yet. I know with my kids if they had this reaction I'd stop that food and try something else. Some foods are harder on the tummy and take a more mature tummy to tolerate. Then maybe in 3-4 months you could try again and see if the bananas are tolerated.

Bananas are binding. They're great when your little one has diarrhea. I would mix the banana with another fruit. I would also try an actual banana mashed up to rule out any allergy to the jarred stuff.

I was in the same boat just a couple weeks ago. I ended up calling her dr, and he said since her immune system is still maturing, she may have these episodes often. He said the best thing to do would be to give her only 2 TBS of a fruit or veggie with about the same as cereal at once. If she is still hungry, try more cereal.
Hope things work out for you, and good luck! I know what its like to be tired!

It could be a growth spurt. If this continues for 2-3 nights, and the symptoms would be extremely fussy, not sleeping much or barely any, and wanting to eat all the time. I would recommend waiting atleast a week before reintroducing the banana's. Not too say it couldn't have been a reactionto the banana's. Next time you introduce a new food, make sure it is a single food item (ie: peaches or pears)and maybe offer 1 tablespoon for the first introduction. This way if there is a reaction then it won't be so severe.
One more thing.....be careful, banana's can be constipating if given on a regular basis.

If this type of behavior concerns you, never hesitate to make an appointment w/ her pediatrician. You can never be too careful. I would rather spend the money on a copay, then to ignore something and have it turned out to be something else.

Maybe teething.

Hope you get some rest! Good Luck!

She may be constipated. My Dr. told me that bananas and apples can make it hard for the baby to go. She told me to give him some gas drops. They helped so much we did'nt have any more upset tummy. His stomach slowly got used to the foods and we don't use the drops any more.

Bananas are very constipating...perhaps it was just too much all at once for your daughter. I learned to give my son the Gerber jarred prunes and it would usually resolve any problems.

Hi J.. I woudn't be to upset about it until it continues for a couple of days. Then you need to take her to the doctors. In my opionion, if she ate the whole thing without being forced too, she wanted it. My son got a touch of the stomach bug last week, and another friend of mine (she's also on Mamasource) her family got sick with it too. She lives in Oregon and I live in California. Its just something that is going around. I wouldn't blame it on the food. If she was allergic, she would have swelled instantly and she wouldn't have been able to breathe (we had to call an ambulance because my son is allergic to cocktail sauce...we found that out). As for being too sweet, hasn't she ate anything like this before? She's six months so surely you've had her on baby food right? I think you should wait and see if this stomach thing turns back up. or any other kind of sickness. My son had the stomach thing for about 12-18 hours, then it went to fever and then sore throat. Now, he's all better. lol. give it time. W/b and let us know how this goes. Good luck and Best Wishes, T.

It might be simply that it was too much on her tummy. Banana can be constipating (in fact, it is suggested to help firm up baby if fighting diareah), so perhaps her little tummy was just having a hard time digesting it all since she's not used to it. My son was allergic to banana and would rash out after he ate it. Sorry you had a sleepless night. {hugs}

Hi, I'm a mother of a 2 1/2 year old boy. My son has always liked a variety of foods from the beginning. Bananas are still one of his favorites. He was sick one time and I had to watch his diet, doctors orders. I thought that bananas were good for the bowels, to keep them moving, but his doctor informed me that bananas are actually constipating. Your daughter may have just been backed up. I am a massage therapist, and one suggestion for you in the future if your daughter has stomach problems like that again: Massage her stomach in a circle, clockwise(very important, counter clockwise can back her up!), from the center of the pelvis, out to the edge of the pelvis, up to the rib, over to opposite rib, down to the pelvis and back to the middle. What this does is move whatever's in the large intestine on down to the colon. You can try this on yourself first just to get a feel for it, it's really easy and definately helps. It helps with gas and constipation. Make sure you don't push too hard, but hard enough to move things, that's why I say try it on yourself first just to get a feel for how hard to push. Don't worry, you won't hurt her, if anything you will probably try not to push hard enough to avoid hurting her, she'll tell you if you are hurting her! Good luck, I hope this helps!

Hi Jamie,
I'm so glad I can help you with this, my girlfriend had the same problem with her 9 month old. Bananas are very binding and if you eat too many they can be very constipating. The poor thing probably had serious stomach cramps all night. I would give her as much fluids as she'll take and no more bananas until she has pooped for sure.

I don't know any specifics about why but I had heard that bananas can cause constipation in little ones. That might be the problem.

Bananas, as my mother so daintily put it, are "binding". They can cause constipation. My daughter had an ongoing problem with constipation into her toddler years (Thankfully, we're past it now!). You might consider that possibility. Good luck!

Banana's have a tendancy to cause gas and constipation in large ammounts. It all depends on your child. I would try again and keep a food journal recording anything unsual that happens after she eats certain foods. It also could have been the cereal. Maybe separating them would help to determine the problem.

From what I have learned mixed grain and bananas can both be a little constipating. In addition to that, it was probably a little heavy on her stomach. I did the same thing with my son, and had the same thing happen...Maybe just try and introduce fruits that start with the letter P. I was told that fruits that start with the letter P are easily digested. So, with my son I would do pears, then bananas, then peaches, then applesauce..Something along those lines....Just flipping the easily digested foods with the not so easy to digest ones. Hope this helps..

yes, bananas can cause a upset stomach. I tried giving them to my dd when she was 6m old (now 2y old), and she was crying all day long! I think for banans you have to wait untill they are older. When my dd was about a year old, I tried again and she did just fine.

When my son was 6 months I started giving him solids too. But I would only give him half of the jar of veggies or fruit. I also mixed cereal with whatever I was giving him. I used barley or mixed grain cereals because they were better for his stomach. Does it only happen with bananas or other fruits/veggies as well. This is a time where you need to watch what they eat because they could be allergic to something. My son is allergic to strawberries and he broke out in a rash. I hope my advice helps. Good luck!

Whether it's an alergy or not, it sounds like her system is not ready to process the bananas yet. I would wait a few months & then re-introduce them. If she has the same reaction, she's probably allergic.

Hi Jamie,

It's a little too early to feed her fruits and vegetables. She should be on rice cereal and breast milk/formula for another couple of months. Then start adding in one food at a time. Bananas are very h*** o* the system. I don't recommend them until a child is a year old. Go with melons and things that are easy to digest. I would suggest the next couple of things to try would be carrots and maybe a yam. She will tell you if it's too much just like with the banana. Also, make sure that she gets water in her system if you are giving her food.

Last bit of advice, make the food yourself. The jar foods have a lot of preservatives. Just cook it and mash it.

Hope this helps and contact me if you have more questions.

Bananas can back babies up. She probably has a stomach ache from being constipated. Cut back on the bananas and try some more veggies.

You may have just overfed her, but since it was mixed grain cereal, that causes a lot of gas too. My suggestion would be to try bananas with rice cereal, if that doesnt cause yuckys then it was probably the mixed grains.

good luck
