Upright Freezer That Comes Ajar

Help please! I cannot afford to purchase a new freezer right now but the door to the one I have keeps coming ajar once it is closed. The freezer is probably 15 years old but it still works great, it's just the door is malfunctioning. Does anyone know if the strip that goes around the door of the freezer can be replaced. If not does anyone know any discount places in the Grand Prairie area that have reasonable prices. I am a single mom whose only income right now is substitute teaching. Thanks for any help you can give.

What can I do next?

I have no freezer experience to share but I love the folks at Thompson's Appliance in Arlington (not too far from GP). They have a great parts department and could probably advise you if this an easy to accomplish fix. I highly recommend at least giving them a call. If you have any paperwork on the freezer, pull it out first so you know the make and model. If a serial number or anything is needed for ordering parts, Thompson's can generally tell you where to look to find it on your unit. I have been able to fix a fridge and a dryer with their assistance and for less than $30 total!

Yes you can replace the seal.
Amana Refrigerators are notorious for this problem. I've replaced the rubber seal that goes around the door twice. You can order these from the company or a parts supplier.

I have found, being the handy"man" of the family as we cannot afford a professional one and my husband runs screaming from the house when something breaks, that you can almost always find a solution by looking online. There are diagrams of how to do things and help lines, chat rooms, it is truly a Godsend for those of us who cannot afford professional repair services.

It might just need defrosting.Open and close the door then listen for a suction sound. If you don't hear this, then try defrosting before purchasing anything to try and repair it.

what about bungee cords or heavy-duty velcro straps?
