I have been looking at some of the requests about online colleges. I am thinking of applying for University of Phoenix but I want to make sure it is a credible school. In other words when I go look for a job will the employer consider this degree a joke or an actual degree. I am also looking into UTA as an alternative. I have an associates degree so I only need my bachelors. I want to get my degree in criminal justice so I need an online school with that program. I will be applying for financial aid so I need to put the school on my form asap. Thanks

So What Happened?

I have read all the responses and wanted to thank you each personally. I have decided to go with UTA or UNT because the fact that the University of Phoenix is too expensive. I do think that U of P is an accredited school now but I do think that financially I probably wont be able to afford it. I just love this website and appreciate all the feedback I recieve. Thanks again, S.

If you are getting a criminal justice degree, then GW's response doesn't apply. My brother is a criminal justice major and a detective with DPD. They aren't really concerned about where you get the hours as long as you have them.

My husband used University of Phoenix for his education. He is a computer consultant. UP is very demanding and becoming more well known. If you are concerned about what your final degree says, you can transfer your credits to another college to for what it says on your certificate. UP guarantees your credits will transfer. I can see if GW's husband was talking about the tech schools because their credits don't transfer which you can read in tiny little letters on the commercials.

My only concern with UP is that it is VERY expensive. It is typically more expensive than any other college option because it is not state funded. It is a corporation and is there for the convenience of being able to get your degree from home.

I also have an Associate Degree that I got from AIU online. They are credited. One gal in my class online had gone to Phoenix but liked AIU better. She also said it was cheaper. I went a year and got a two year degree but had a $24,000 bill in the end which I refinanced my house to pay off. I started to go back for the bach degree but quit as it was much harder, but I just was worn out. I think the College is great. Looking for work employers found it credited but I still did not get a great job. I would have had to work week ends and such where I looked. So I opened a Home Day Care where I can pick sort of hours but stay at home with my granddaughter and not have to worry about Day Cares for her. This is my nitch but because of my degree helped me here too. I spent most of my time learning with tech support the pc. I also found out the software I got from them, I had not installed it all the way, and that is why I had so much trouble. Of course I was about to graduate when I found it out. I did it all the hard way. They have no tests and that is great.

There is another way you can get a bach degree. Go to the College get the books and take a test. It is much cheaper. You have something like nine months to do it in. Gordon from a business class I took told us about it. I maybe can find out for you if I have your e-mail address. When I went to a Day Care was told that I over qualified and with the Degree should seek upper management. Also I was thrilled to learn when opening my Day Care that it was needed to do so. They wanted my transcipts for the state to give me a registed number. Without it I could not have gotten it. I do not know about your field but AIU is very honorable, it is the Sallie Mae loans I hate. G. W

Hi S.. Congratulations on going after your degree. I would suggest you look into UTA or even UNT. I received my degree from UNT in August 2008 and it was a great experience. The night classes have a wide variety of students and some excellent professors. As far as U of Phoenix goes, I looked into going there as well and while it may seem more convenient, it is quite a deal more expensive. You pay by the class and it is much more expensive overall. Also after talking to some advisors and recruiters, they reccommended going to UNT rather than U of Phoenix strictly on the reputation. I believe they are a good school and they are accredited, however I have found that employers look much more favorably on other universities. I hope this helps!!

I would suggest UTA. If you are going to pay the money and go through the effort of getting a degree you might as well get a degree from a school that is credible. I know it is an accredited school; however, with the competitive environment we are in today school does matter. I have been in a management role and when your sorting through resumes it may come down to just a few things. You don't want this to be the thing that pushes your resume aside. Good luck!!

You also might want to try Everest it in an accredited school and it is just like Phoenix.

Ok, I don't want to offend anyone but my husband is in upper management with his company and he's told me that applicants with degrees from U of P don't get taken that seriously (and that goes for other colleges like them, not just that particular one). Sorry, but there probably is a fair many employers who feel the same way. Today's job market is obviously very tough so you are right to strongly consider this choice.

I am a professor at UNT, and I can tell you that UTA would be taken more seriously in the world of academia, but U of Phoenix is growing in reputation, and has the rep of being pretty much the ONLY online-exclusive university taken seriously in the academic world. A good friend of mine is an administrator at U of Phoenix, and it is a real school that is fully accredited with the real bodies that accredit actual universities. Pretty much every other online-only school is not accredited by those bodies, but fake bodies that do not translate. I would advise looking into U of Phoenix and UTA and see which meets your needs. UTA (as well as UTD and UNT) may have online solutions for you. If they do, I would advise you to go with them. However, if they don't, U of Phoenix is growing in reputation and is taken a lot more seriously that all of the other online schools. Good luck wherever you go! :)

Go for it! UoP is an accredited school. I got my Bachelor degree in Business Management in 2003. I did not take the online classes, but heard from one of my classmates that the classes he took were excellent. The teacher gives you immediate feedback and you can even link up with other folks in your area for study groups.
Good luck!

I am not sure about all of their programs but I know that there are several places that do not recognize University of Phoenix as a credible college. I would ask around in the criminal justice job market and find out if they will accept it.
