Unexplained Weight Loss

This sounds kind of.. dumb, but I'm worried about my weight and I'm not talking about gaining. My son is almost 9 months old, and I had a lot of trouble losing the baby weight after my first 2 babies were born (he's number 3)... I don't know if it's stress or just the fact that I'm running after 3 kids, but I've lost more weight (not trying) than I would have ever have liked. We eat very healthy, and I am NOT one to EVER pass up food... ever... eating is my favorite... but I've never been down this low before. I'm a pretty small person, 5 foot 2 inches, but I usually weigh around 115, 120, and I like that, makes me curvy... now, I'm down to 100 lbs and I don't look healthy at all!! Last time I weighed 100 lbs was in high school when I had mono! I'm starting to think I'm sick or something!!

What can I do next?

I would definitely see your doctor and ask that blood work be done. My first thought was your thyroid. Sounds like the symptoms my father had right before he was diagnosed with hyperthyroidisim. Never hurts to get checked out. Better to be safe. =0)

Your question isn't dumb. You know that a weight loss can be a symptom of a physical problem.

So please go to your doctor and get a checkup. If you're just burning up a lot more calories than you're accustomed to, then you'll know and won't need to worry. But if you look sick, you might be sick. Trust your instincts on this. Please see your doctor; your children need you to be healthy.

I agree with those who say "see your doctor".

In my case, my unexplained weight loss a few weeks after baby #2 was cancer. I was so proud of myself for being able to get in pre-pregnancy clothes 2.5 weeks postpartum.

None of my blood work suggested cancer - just a suspicious swollen lymph node on my collarbone.

Chances are, it's nothing, but trust your doctor over us, please.

I think there is a lot to the three kiddos to chase . I saw my sister in law shrink up when she was chasing three little ones and BF one only to bounce back when she had #4 LOL! but now she is quite healthy.
However, if you feel there is cause for alarm, give your doc a call.

I had the same problem after my son turned 6 months old. You should see your doctor and see if you have food allergies. My drastic weight loss and fatigue were due to my allergies to wheat and other grains. But even if this is not it, you would benefit from knowing what's causing this problem. More and more people are finding out that they are allergic to wheat and other gluten-products. Hope you find out what's causing this problem.

having a child can mess with your thyroid. go have it checked as you might have hyperthyroidism.

Have your thyroid checked. If you have a hyperactive thyroid it could cause weight loss.

You need to be evaluated by a physician asap. It could be something like Stress, Thyroid, Celiac or it could be an indicator of something more serious like cancer. Unexplained, excessive weight loss is serious and needs to be checked immediately especially since you were small to begin with. Good luck!

Have your Doctor run a blood test for Celiac disease. It can be triggered by stressful events (such as childbirth) and has a genetic component to it. Celiac disease is an autoimmunological disorder that causes your body to become intolerant to gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye. The inner lining of your small intestines "collapse" which keeps you from being able to absorb the nutrients from food and can resulting in weight loss without trying (they call it "wasting"). Its a simple blood draw to test for the antibodies. Celiac is becoming more prevalent, and is now more easily diagnosed than ever. It could save you a LOT of poking, prodding, and testing to ask for this screening up front.

Hi, well, I used to have that problem before after I gave birth to my 4th child. I started to lose weight really fast after three months of giving birth till I reached 100 lbs, and I'm a half-inch more petite than you. Some friends wanted me to check with the doctor already, but then my weight went up and stabilized at 110-115 lbs. (Of course that was 18 years ago, and my problem now is different!)

My advice would be to go ahead and visit a doctor - it could be some hormonal change that's causing the weight loss, or something more serious like a problem with your endocrine glands. Some types of diabetes also manifest in this manner.

Take care.

Teresa

Hi! I would get your thyroid checked out- could be too high- that can cause weight loss and I know thyroid levels can go a little nuts after having a baby.
