Unexplained Fever?

Anyone know if there is a random fever virus going around? My daughter complained of a little stomach ache and a fever of 101.5 but is acting fine. I don't want to subject her to the doctor's office for a slight virus, but curious if anyone has heard of what's going around? Thanks!

no, but the news anchor on Friday was saying any fever right now warrants a call to the doctor's office. You might just call and see what they say.

Hey consider me the worry wart. With all this swine flu stuff I would call the Dr. and describe symptoms but be prepared to go in.

Hi,
My son had a fever for about a day and then went away, a few day later it came back and again in a few days with throwing up. Seems to have been just a strange virus...a few of his cousins and my dad ended up getting a fever as well. There is something going around w no other symptoms. I also had blood work done for cbc and lyme's because I was getting worried. This went on for 11 days. You can check my question on it and response...some good info on there. Hope your daughter feels better!

It seems as if there is always something going around, huh? I can tell you my father was sick last week with a temp of 101.8 and a little nausea. Plus, he ached a little but only while he was feverish. All total it lasted less than 48 hours. I am sure it was some kind of virus he picked up and that's probably the case with your daughter. I would just watch her to see how she does over the next 24-48 hours. Not to sound negative but taking her to the dr's office will most likely be a waste of your time and money anyway. If it's a virus there is nothing at all they can prescribe her because antibiotics won't work. All they will tell you is to treat her symptoms and they should be able to give you that advice, if you need it, over the phone. As long as she is eating, playing, going to the bathroom, I would say ride it out. Good luck, hope she gets over it quickly!

My daughter had this last week. Woke up one morning saying her head hurt and told her daddy it was allergies. She's 4. Daddy gave her Benedryl and some milk. Of course she threw everything from that morning and the night before up. She was running fever of about 102 when they finally woke me up. Gave her some Tyelenol and just gave her lots of other fluids. She never threw up again, but ran fever and complained of headache. Didn't eat much that day or the next. I never took her to doctor, and it only lasted a couple of days. I figured it was just a bug. I didn't want to chance it and take her to the doctor to get something else. I would say if she runs fever more than 103 or if it goes on for more than 3 days to take her in. She might have something more than just a bug.
Good luck!

Yep. We've all gotten it with the fever, some of us also came down with runny nose and cough too for extra fun. Everyone I know is getting it or have already had it.

All 3 of my kids just had a 3 day fever..no other symptoms and acted pretty normal. The youngest one (11 months) got a rash after the fever but the other two did not. Probably not necessary to take to doctor.

Yes, ma'am. We spent this weekend going from Acute Care Kids to Children's. Our daughter's fever spiked to 105 at one point. Cultured for strep and flu and both were negative. The ER doctor at Children's told us that on his shift alone, he had seen 20 kiddos with the exact same symptoms and they have no clue what it is. We kept giving her Motrin as directed until the fever finally broke. Hope your baby is well soon!

Yep - same here. Negative tests for swine flu, flu and strep...just fever. Strangely enough - our daughter's fever always responds to Motrin but this fever would not. Had to move to Tylenol, which usually does NOT work. But it was gone in a couple of days! Good luck.

Yup! My daughter had a fever without budging at 101.5 and no other symptoms. AND then following the fever came a rash. It is very slight and it came and went pretty quickly. It was Rota virus. So if she has a rash to follow that is what it is.

Just to chime in :>...I'm with everybody else. My son came down with whatever this is on Friday night. During the middle of the night he came to our bed and I noticed he was burning up. Next morning...still fever so I took his temp and it was 101. It seems to go away during the day and he's fine and up and playing and of course when it's time to go to bed here comes the fever again. He's got laryngitis (sp?) now and he has a little cough. He has had diarhea but he also has a sensitive stomach and we gave him apple juice which always gave me problems as a kiddo so I'm not sure how much is virus related and tummy related you know.

Hope yours and mine get to feeling better soon! Such a bad time of year!

We have it too. My three year old woke up early Sunday morning with a fever of 101.9 and its been a pretty steady since. Same thing. Acting fine, no cough, sore throat, ears..nothing. I did call the dr. and they said to wait at least 2-3 days. 2 days if child is not eating and looks sick or acting sick. 3 if fever is still present all the time. My son is not looking sick at all and he's eating and drinking well. Im going to give it a day or so more.

Sorry, but I would check for strep too. My son recently complained that his stomach hurt, and he was running a little fever. Only because my older daughter had complained that her throat hurt that morning, did I know to take them both in. Stomach ache is actually a fairly common symptom, and from what I hear, strep is making the rounds. Just a thought. Some people have had the flu around me already, but other than that, I am not sure. good luck ~A.~

I was going to post something similar today. DS woke up overnight with about 104 fever. It went down with motrin, but it's back up this morning. He's had some coughing and sniffles for a couple of days prior, but overall, he's just tired and kind of "blah", but no other real severe symptoms. I hate to drag him to the dr, but I'm going to today in case it's something like strep or swine flu...but I have my doubts it's either one. I am NOT ready for the sick season...

ETA - took DS to the doc. Neg strep test and doc said its' very unlikely to be flu because it wouldn't spike like that and he wouldn't be up and down, but just down, which he isn't. Treating with motrin/tylenol. So frustrating when it's not really treatable.

Both of my kids have had this. My daughter had fever for 3 days, and on day 3 I took her in for a strep test, which was negative. The dr. said it was just a virus. My son had it too but only had fever for one day.

Both of my four year old boys have had this in the last week and now my hubby started feeling bad Saturday. For my boys it was the fever around 101 and headaches and with one of the twins it was a small amount of vomiting. Several friends at church have had their kids experince almost identical symptoms so there must be a certain strand running around. With back to school, it always seems to flare back up as all those germs get mixed all together again...

we had it at our house too. first the 7 yo son, then husband, me, then the 5month baby and then my 13 year old daughter. however we didn't get much of a fever. just 100-101 for the son and daughter. infant didn't go up that i saw and me and hubby only 99-100. we had sore throat, headache, congestion, runny nose. using a saline flush/rinse (sinus) really really helped cut it down to just a few days. I'll say, with school just back in session i'm not surprised at any "out break" of viruses since just being around more people can up your chances of contracting something. my sons first year of school (k) he hasn't been around a lot of kids before that and he had 18 days absent from school that year bc he just kept catching EVERYTHIGN that came around. the next year (last year) he was much more immune (and I imagine we got better at washing hands etc) so he only missed about five days all year.

Swine flu is going around, I know of several school age kids with positive results, starting with low grade fever and queazy stomach. Strep is going around, I know even more with it. It can present with a stomach ache instead of a soar throat as well. I would call the dr and see that they say.

We are on day 3 of fever. Last night his stomach was hurting. His fever has being going up and down. Controlled pretty well with Motrin. He's sleeping alot. I plan on taking him to the doctor tomorrow if the fever isn't gone. I hate taking him to the doctor as well b/c of the germ exposure.

Good luck!!!

Just to let you know like most of the others. My son had the random fever a week ago for 4 days straight. It got as high as almost 104. I only gave him the motrin and tylenol when he really hurt and was lying around, but most of the time he was playing. After the 4th day I was concerned and took him in and everything checked out fine and he was fine the next day. Not sure what it was but he had no other symptoms at all. No one else in the family got it so that is why it was strange.

There's always something going around. If she's otherwise fine, you probably don't need to take her in. You might call tomorrow to double check, but if she's otherwise fine they might have you monitor and treat at home.
