Underweight 13 Month Old, I Did Have IUGR During Pregnancy.
I have a beautiful 13 month old baby girl. The only concern that I have is that she is very small in size for her age. She's only 13 and a half pounds. Height wise she's doing great, but it just makes her look even that much thinner. I was diagnosed with IUGR (interuterine growth restriction) during my pregnancy and was put on bed rest and saw a high risk doctor the last two months.
She was born full term (38 wks buy trying to induce me although I still ended up with a c-section) at 4 lbs 12 oz. She's always been breastfed. She does eat real food, but she eats appropriate to her size. She has been to a number of specialist including a GI doctor, cardiologist and we are having genetic testing done at the end of the month just to finish off every possiblility but I had an amnio and her chromozones have already been tested and everything is perfect, so I don't expect, or want, them to find anyting wrong. In addition, she has numerous lab (blood, stool and urine) tests done as well. Poor thing has been put through a lot, but I have to say, she handles it like a champ. No doctor can find anyting wrong with her which I am totally grateful. She is healthy and very active. She has hit every milestone as well. As grateful that I am that she is healthy and the doctors beleive that being a petite baby is just who she is(I'm only 5'-1" as well, but I was never this small as a baby), I'd like to see her gain a little weight. She doesn't over eat and is a picky eater as well. We've tried to add pediasure and milk to her diet, but she's not interested.
Has anyone else had a small baby that wasn't premature and do you have any suggestions for trying to get a little wieght on her? I'm not trying to turn her into a fat baby or anything that she is not meant to be, I would just like her to gain and extra pound or two.
So What Happened?™
Thank you all so much for your suggestions and sharing your stories of similar situations. It is so nice to know that others have gone through this and have had positive outcomes. There were also a lot of good suggestions that I will definitly try. Thank you all for taking the time to write. I truly appreciate it.

I wouldn't worry too much about it since the doctors have run tests on her and can find nothing wrong. My son is almost two and still wears 12 month old pants... He's 23 pounds. The doctor just tells us he's petite also. if she is still active and hitting her developemental milestones, I wouldn't stress... In regards to the picky eating, all i do is find the healthy stuff he likes and hide the tuff he doesn't like in it! he likes meat loaf so i chop Spinach up and cook it in the meat loaf. He also likes scrambled eggs, so I put veggies in his eggs!

Hello, S.,
I work with some extraordinary foods as a nutrition coach. I have a mid-wife in my group who has delivered over 3500 babies and knows the power of these regenerative foods, as well. I would love to have the opportunity to talk with you about how they can help. Let me know if you would be interested.
My very best to you,

It looks like oatmeal but 2 tablespoons equal 14 grams of protien.

The only thing I can think of you could do besides stop worrying is to make sure she is getting some extra DHA. There is a chewable called Brainiums that is wonderful!! You can get it at www.we-us.mychoices.biz
An age appropriate supplement is never a bad idea and the childrens chewable by Nutrilite is great and can (not always) help with appetite. You can get that at the above site also.
One of my twins was 'squished and upside down' and was thin for quite a while. He is a 6'7" strapping man now.

S.,
I can't blame you for worrying! I would too. It;s so easy when anything is happening to you than to your child, no? Things pop in your head that would never if it was you. It's the mama gene :)
I agree with some of the posts that you should just let it go. No more tests! For one, nothing seems to be wrong, and two, you don't want her to get any issues around her body image and weight. Girls have it tough enough.
I'd just continue to offer her good nutrition, even if she only eats small meals, and let time take it's course. I have a friend whose daughter is now 5, similar situation, IUGR, preemie. She's still tiny, but developmentally fine. Her dad is 6'7" and her mom is 5'10"! At least you have genetics with your slight frame partly playing into why she could be small.
One thing that may or may not help you is that she may in fact been preemie. There is a common misconsception in our society that full term is 40 weeks (with our prevelent culture of over doing the indutions and Csections). But in fact, according to Harvard studies, a first time mom's AVG gestation, WITHOUT INTERVENTION (hard to find these days), is actually 41 1/7 weeks. It's a few days longer for subsequent births. This means that if 41+ is the AVERAGE, there have to be births on both sides of that. So a 38 week old could in fact be 4-5 weeks early, and therefor be a preemie (which would explain her low birth weight and current petite size). Who knows. But even if she was a preemie, the good news is she is healthy now.
So focus on that. Enjoy your baby girl and try not to worry. Focus on only the things you can control, like quality time, good food, and lots of snuggles!

ps I sure there are many stories of babies on the flip side who are tubby little guys, even into toddler/ later years, whose parents are lean and fit, and the kids eat well and get exercise. Many grow out of it.

My Daughter has been underweight since birth as well. She was 4 lbs 11 oz at full term (c-section) 9 1/2 inches long! She was itty bitty! Now at 8 years old going into 3rd grade she is a whopping 50 lbs! LOL! She is small and that’s just that. She eats well (always has) and is extremely athletic. Don't stress yourself out, as long as you are feeding her a proper diet and keeping her active and the doctors say she is healthy....then she is FINE! There are no tricks to getting her to gain some weight besides making sure healthy snacks are readily available and keeping up with vitamins. It sounds like you are doing great! Have faith in yourself and enjoy your baby she too will grow!! :0)

My daughter was only 13 pounds at a year old, she was suppose to be premature and I was on bed rest for the last 3 months and ended up going 2 1/2 weeks overdue and had to get induced but after 24 hrs she was born weighing 7 lb 13 oz. She was always the smallest and in 3rd grade had a growth spurt and today at 14 she weighs 95 pounds and 5 feet tall. My 20 year old who was always tall and weigh more then peers is also only 5 feet and weighs 105-110. I watch a girl who will be 5 and is the size of my 2 & 3 year olds but her parents are small. So as long as all the test come back good enjoy your daughter and your piece of mind that she is a healthy tiny little girl.

Hello,
I am a mother of four daughters. I have never had IUGR but I do want to tell you not to worry.
My third daughter was also very small. Her clothing size was normally her age or smaller, when she was 1yea she wore 12 months, 2years she wore 2T, etc.
She is now 20 years old and still tiny, 5'2"and wears size zero.
As long as she is hitting all the other milestones try not to worry, some children are just meant to be small.

Hay S., I just want you to know you are not alone :) there are other little ones out there!! My little girl was small forever and has still not cought up.. She was born at 39 weeks 7lbs 8oz, but that is as close to normal as she has ever been.. she was weighing in at 27lbs at 3 age and is 10 years old now and is 53 lbs dripping wet!! She is in the 4th grade and the size of an average 2nd grader.. We have also had every test done on her and everything checks out ok.. they say she is just small.. so I guess my only advise to you would be love her lots and try to help her feel confortable with who she is :) and learn how to sew!! Nothing EVER fits our little ladies!!!

Hi S.- I too had/have a tiny little girl...About 20% for height....Not on the charts for weight...It was very noticable for us about 9 months...She was 12 lbs 11 oz... Her birth weight of 5 lbs. 12 oz...She had several blood/urine/stool tests, and nothing showed up...Developementally she was/is right on...She was nearly 2 yrs. old before she weighed enough to put her forward facing in the car seat...She is 3 now and still very light, 25 lbs...When she was 12 months and could have milk products we gave her fruit flavored Greek-style yogurt (available @ Trader Joes if you live by one)...She LOVED it...Choc. Pudding...Ice cream...You may want to try mixing whole milk w/cream too...My daughter loved it all and eats very healthy today..(It didn't ruin her.. LOL)Good Luck...don't worry too much...There is a lot of info. on the internet, it can be a bit scary and overwhelming...
