Umbilical Hernia in Newborn

After my daughter's umbilical cord fell off it was apparent that she had an umbilical hernia. Our doctor said that we will wait for a year and see if it closes up on its own. I was just wondering if anyone else out there has had any experience with this. Is it likely it will close on its own? What age did this happen? Has anyone been through the surgery process? What is the surgery like? I am just trying to figure out what to expect.

What can I do next?

My son was a preemie and had an umbilical hernia. It got bigger before it eventually went away around 10 mos. It bothered me more than it bothered him, no one knew he had it unless they changed his diaper. It stuck out about 1 to 1 1/2 inches. Most do go away on thier own. Good Luck!

My nephew had one that closed up when he was about 9 months old with no issues.

Hope all goes well.

My son had the same thing when his umbilicle cord fell off. We had the doctor look at it and a surgeon and were told they won't even do surgery until around 3, if it doesn't go down. Most of the time they do go away. my little boy's started to go in around 10 months. He is 20 months now and it pokes out a little, but no one else would ever know. I wouldn't worry about it.

My baby had the same thing and it just went away when he was about 1. I wouldn't worry about it if your Dr. isn't concerned. I know it looks weird though. :)

My daughter had the exact same thing after her cord fell off. Eventually it just closed on its own, with no medical intervention at all. It never hurt her or bothered her, it just looked a little bit funny. She is 4 now, and her belly button looks just like everyone else's!

My daughter had one that was rather large. Her doctors didn't recommend surgery until age two if it hadn't resolved. She's now 3 1/2 months and it has resolved by itself.

Both of my daughters had the same problem. I followed an old wives tale and we used medical tape to tape a large round Silver Dollar on thier bellies and kept it on their for a few months and it healed naturally on it's own. it's kind of like sticking a support in place so that they could cry with out me freaking out about it until it healed. You could try it if you like. We just used the medical tape that they use for athletes etc. Good luck.

One of my duaghters and my son both had an umbilical hernia. My daughters was really big and it took longer to heal; but they both healed on their own. My pediatrician checked them at each check up and they were slowly getting smaller. He also mentioned that if they didn't go away they would need surgery, but it never came to that. Both of them are fine. They do have outie belly buttons.

my son, who is now 14 months, was born with one too. By the time he was 6 months, it had pretty much gone away. His belly button still protrudes slightly, but there is no concern regarding needing surgery. I was also told to wait a year, and that if it wasnt better, options would be discussed. The dr also told me that surgery is only necessary in extreme cases. Good luck!

C.,
When I was born I had an umbilical cord hernia do to a rupture in the cord. I had several sugeries but I was also an extremely sick baby. If surgery is suggested by the doctors then you should go through with it as soon as posible. She will not remember the sugeries when she is older, I don't at all. I'm sure mine was way worse, and the technology today is way better then it was 39 years ago. So she should be okay, you'll worry of course, but all moms worry even when they only have a little cold.
Good Luck,
E.

My middle child had an umbilical hernia. We were told to wait and watch to see if it heals. At 5 months old I took her to a surgeon at Childrens. He said the same thing but to bring her back in 6 months and they would measure it again. At the 6 month return trip they discovered it had actually gotten bigger. We had the surgery at Childrens and all is great. They let me stay with her until she was asleeep and be the one holding her when she woke up. She didn't have any problems other than sleepy for a day or so. If you look really close she has a small "smile" like scar under her belly button. It is so faint that she will get to enjoy bathing suits without worry.

My suggestion is to just keep a watchful eye on it and if you feel it needs to be checked. Have it checked. My ped dr was less than thrilled that I took her in but after the surgery he realized that "mom was right".

I pray that this is the most you will go through with your sweet little girl.

My daughter had the same thing. It seemed like it took at least 2 years to go away, but it never bothered her. She still really has an outy, but she is now 7, and it looks fine. As long as it doesn't hurt your daughter, I would not worry.

Hi! My 10 year old son had it and it did not resolve itself, however we went to 2 different doctors and they told us to wait until 2-3 years old which we did. He had surgery and did fine. They let me stay back with him in the OR until the gas took affect and he drifted off. Only then did they IV him. So he was already out. The surgery is very common and took about 40 minutes. He was in recovery for an 1 and a half and we took him home. He was a little more lethargic than normal, but within a day or two was fine. No scar or nothing. Good Luck!!

My sister-in-law had a baby boy in September and he had the same thing. The Dr also said to wait and it did fix itself. He is 4 months old now and he discovered it was fixed at the 4 month check up. Also her cousin's baby had the same thing and it also fixed itself, not sure what age though.

Now that the cord is off the diaper should cover the belly button. And that is a good thing because it helps to keep the hernia where it belongs rather than hanging out so far. Even if you use anold onsie that is too small but will go around her tummy to bind the hernia it will do a ol better alot faster. This way is worth a shot at least till the dr says otherwise. Good luck

That is the same with my niece. The doctor told my sister and bro-in-law that it could heal lby itself. but if not, when she got older if they wanted to have it fixed it could be done but it would be more for cosmetic reasons than anything. I don't see my niece all the time but when I do, there are days that it looks like it has taken care of itself but on other days, it is really prominent. It doesn't seem to bother her any at all so I don't think that her parents are going to have the surgery.

My daughter had an abilical hernia that was surgically closed when she was around two years old. We were to going to wait it out, to see if it closed on it's own but it began to get really irritated from rubbing against clothing. She was put under, but seemed to have no effects from the anesthesia other than she slept a lot. Went home by afternoon. Overall, the whole process was very uneventful.

My neice had one that closed on it's own at around five, I think.

my 16 year od was born with a umbilical herna. he did have to have surgery on it when he was 13 months old. The surgery was a short procedure and took about 45 minutes. The hardest part for him was the anesthesia. It made him very sick when we got home.It was harder on me than it was on him. he remained a very active little guy through the whole healing phase too. It took about 6 weeks or so for it to heal. to look at his belly button you would never know he had to have sugery. i wish you the best of luck and hope that things will go well for you

I was told the same thing when my son was born, however, I was told that it could take up to two years to heal on its own. My son is now 15 months and still has the hernia. I keep a close eye on it. Some days it looks bad and other days not so bad. I am going to speak with my son's doctor about it because I would think it would heal by now.
