Ultrasound Soft Markers

Hi everyone!

I just had my 20 week ultrasound, and I'm having a boy! I'm really excited, but the doctor said something that concerned me. He said the babys head was round instead of oval, and they sometimes see that in downs syndrome babies. Of course, he freaked me out!!! He said everything else was normal and my age (24)and it's highly unlikely anything is wrong with the baby. Of course, I'm still worried. Anyone else have a round head on their
ultrasound?

I actually didn't do a quad screening, thought it would cause more worry then good.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thanks everyone! Had the baby and he's perfectly healthy. :)

Did you have a quad screening test done? If the results came back normal there probably isn't much to worry about. Maybe the baby was laying at an odd angle? Im 22 and had a 1 in 18 chance for having a Down's baby, but my ultrasound came up perfect. I also had an amnio 3 weeks ago that showed no Down's. I wouldnt worry about it, everything will be perfect :)

I think my friend's baby had that and she is perfectly fine.

I had the quad screening because of my age at the time I was pregnant which was 38. I was also told that my son may have downs syndrome but does not. He is now three years old. Go to a perineonatologist. They specialize with women who are at high risk or whom may have issues with their pregnancy. You can talk to your doctor about going to one. I had an intense ultrasound done to see if my child had any of the signs of a child with down syndrome. while he could not guarantee it he said the chances went from 1/132 to 2/232. It is not nice when the doctors freak you out. I was upset at the prospect of having a child with downs syndrome, especially my one and only. Hope for the best and talk to your doctor about your concerns. god bless and good luck

You can still do the quad screen if you do it right away. Why not do it and be either reassured from the results or have enough "ammunition" to feel like an amniocentesis is justified?

Hugs! Doctors have to tell you what they see, even if its a slight indicator. I would ask for a follow up u/s.

My son's head was always perfectly round. Even after birth, when kids get flat spots from laying down, he never did. His head was also always small, never measuring on the charts until his 2yr when it measured in the 4th percentile :)

Good luck!!!!!!!

All 3 of my babies had round heads and they were fine. Good luck!

I completely feel your anquish. The doctors told me with both my children that their heads were large and that could be a marker of Downs. Neither of them have Downs Syndrome. There are other more significant markers than a round head. Did they look at the fingers? A shorter pinky is more clear marker than the head and that isn't even definitive. I know there are other more clear markers too. Do you or the father have a round head? Maybe it is genetic. When the doctors told me about the head size of my babies, I simply said, "look at the size of my husband's head. I guess they'll just need big hats!"

They do have to tell you these things, but since everything else was normal I'm sure there is nothing to worry about! A round head is a VERY soft marker. If they really thought it could be Downs they would not have told you it's highly unlikely anything was wrong.

I wish you luck with the rest of your pregnancy and try to enjoy it as much as possible!

I had an ultrasound that came up similar. They saw some cyst in my daughters brain that said Downs but there were wrong. I didn't do any further testing either. I think they are wrong a lot of the time.
