Ultrasound Accuracy.............

Hi everyone,

ok some of you have got to be dealing with what i am right now. i am 19 weeks into my 2nd pregnancy and i had my ultrasound last Thursday. According to the tech who did my u/s the baby is a girl.......but i think she really just said it was a girl cause the baby was in a weird position and couldnt really see the parts! I just dont believe its a girl. Everything in my body tells me BOY. i just dont think i got a good tech. she barely said three words to my husband and i, she gave me a whole new due date that is WAY off! and what really made me upset was my husband asked her at the end of it, well, besides it being a girl did everything look healthy? all she said was your doctor will discuss that with you and left the room! ughhhh! that is 2 weeks away! but anyways. i just want to ask any of you moms if you were told that you were having a girl and you knew it was a boy and you ended up with a boy! and vice versa. i would be happy with another girl but i seriously think the tech was wrong!!! let me know, im just going crazy not knowing for sure what my baby is!!! THANK YOU!! i have heard ultrasounds arent all that accuarate! my cousins 1st baby was said to be a baby girl, well she had a BOY!!!

What can I do next?

Sometimes with a girl ultrasounds can be wrong mainly because if they are not cooperating and showing you what they may or may not have between their legs. However, my husband is an ultrasound tech and apprently there are hormones in girls that you can see in an ultrasound that allow you to determine if you are having a girl. This is how we determined we were having a girl the first time. Techs aren't supposed to give you the results of the ultrasound because they are not doctors. They are just supposed to take measurements and show them to the doctor. If things weren't ok, the doctor would not let you go home yet. If you really feel it is a boy you can always ask for another ultrasound later on.

I'm not really sure to say about the gender question, except the tech usually won't tell you unless they are relatively certain about the gender. And with regards to the everything looking healthy, if they saw a problem your doctor will call you. We asked at the end of my last ultrasound and got the same "your doctor will discuss the results with you" answer. Well the office called the next day because they did see a problem. So I doubt you'll have to wait two weeks. And if they did see something weird, it's not a good thing but... at least you'll get another peek at the baby because they will order another ultrasound. :)

My husband and I were both sure we were having a girl, but it was clear during the ultrasound that we would indeed be having a little boy. I could have sworn it was a girl up until that time. I guess you will never really know until the big day.

You know the funny thing about your story. I had the same problem too. I thought that the doctor was full of it. But when it came to it. It really was a girl. I swore to my husband and everyone else it was a boy, but I had her May 1st and she was a girl..
Dont sweat it. Alot of the doctors these days do know what they are talking about. Even if the baby is in a weird position.

If you really want another u/s, you can go to one of the private places.

The tech is not supposed to discuss your results with you, so please don't hold that against her. She is not a trained diagnostician, and could be held liable if she made a guess as to the health of your baby and turned out to be wrong.

If the Dr. sees a problem with your baby, they will let you know right away. My u/s tech said they wouldn't let me leave if they saw a problem.

Good luck!
