Hi everyone,

ok some of you have got to be dealing with what i am right now. i am 19 weeks into my 2nd pregnancy and i had my ultrasound last Thursday. According to the tech who did my u/s the baby is a girl.......but i think she really just said it was a girl cause the baby was in a weird position and couldnt really see the parts! I just dont believe its a girl. Everything in my body tells me BOY. i just dont think i got a good tech. she barely said three words to my husband and i, she gave me a whole new due date that is WAY off! and what really made me upset was my husband asked her at the end of it, well, besides it being a girl did everything look healthy? all she said was your doctor will discuss that with you and left the room! ughhhh! that is 2 weeks away! but anyways. i just want to ask any of you moms if you were told that you were having a girl and you knew it was a boy and you ended up with a boy! and vice versa. i would be happy with another girl but i seriously think the tech was wrong!!! let me know, im just going crazy not knowing for sure what my baby is!!! THANK YOU!! i have heard ultrasounds arent all that accuarate! my cousins 1st baby was said to be a baby girl, well she had a BOY!!!

What can I do next?

You know the funny thing about your story. I had the same problem too. I thought that the doctor was full of it. But when it came to it. It really was a girl. I swore to my husband and everyone else it was a boy, but I had her May 1st and she was a girl..
Dont sweat it. Alot of the doctors these days do know what they are talking about. Even if the baby is in a weird position.

Sometimes with a girl ultrasounds can be wrong mainly because if they are not cooperating and showing you what they may or may not have between their legs. However, my husband is an ultrasound tech and apprently there are hormones in girls that you can see in an ultrasound that allow you to determine if you are having a girl. This is how we determined we were having a girl the first time. Techs aren't supposed to give you the results of the ultrasound because they are not doctors. They are just supposed to take measurements and show them to the doctor. If things weren't ok, the doctor would not let you go home yet. If you really feel it is a boy you can always ask for another ultrasound later on.

I'm not really sure to say about the gender question, except the tech usually won't tell you unless they are relatively certain about the gender. And with regards to the everything looking healthy, if they saw a problem your doctor will call you. We asked at the end of my last ultrasound and got the same "your doctor will discuss the results with you" answer. Well the office called the next day because they did see a problem. So I doubt you'll have to wait two weeks. And if they did see something weird, it's not a good thing but... at least you'll get another peek at the baby because they will order another ultrasound. :)

If you really want another u/s, you can go to one of the private places.

The tech is not supposed to discuss your results with you, so please don't hold that against her. She is not a trained diagnostician, and could be held liable if she made a guess as to the health of your baby and turned out to be wrong.

If the Dr. sees a problem with your baby, they will let you know right away. My u/s tech said they wouldn't let me leave if they saw a problem.

Good luck!

My husband and I were both sure we were having a girl, but it was clear during the ultrasound that we would indeed be having a little boy. I could have sworn it was a girl up until that time. I guess you will never really know until the big day.

Ultrasounds are only as good as the tech reading them.

I worked with a girl that was pregnant and she was told it was a boy because if it was a girl that meant she had a really big "clit" and that is the word the tech used. So she went out and bought all the boy stuff and when she had that baby and they said "it's a girl" she was like "WHAT??". So yeah...her ultrasound was way off. I think maybe buy gender neutral things until you get a better confirmation via pictures of boy or girl parts or until the birth. Babies don't need much the first few days of life so there's plenty of time to buy the colored clothing afterward.

Hi K., I know you are anxious, you want that boy! I was the same, I was convinced my baby was a boy, but the ultrasound showed differently. She was in a good position so the Tech had no troubles. If the baby is in a bad position the Tech should let you know, (sounds like they did), and give you their best shot, or wait to see if the baby moves, and try to see again. The Tech also cannot give you any speculation on the baby's health, etc. I tried that too, only to be told to consult my M.D. That is THEIR job. If you have any questions I would consider scheduling a 4D ultrasound, the imaging is incredible, and leaves NO question!
good luck to you and your wee one!

If I were you yes I would get a second opionion because my sisters 4th child was supposed to be a girl and surpirse it was another boy, so yes they can be wrong. The ultrasound people may not always tell you if everything is ok, mine did and was very talkitive and happy. Yea I think I would see if i could find a different ultrasound tech. Another thing is is to wait for a couple of weeks until the baby is further along and they may be able to tell you more.

I know exactly how you feel I had 6 ultrasounds & they told me something different each time. If you are really not pleased I would go talk to customer service or human resources to complain. He impersonal behavior should not happen especially in her line of work. Ultrasound Techs are supposed to be personable. She may have been having a bad day but she shouldn't pass that along to you. If anything complain to your Doctor.

I had a friend that just KNEW she was having a boy. She went out and bought all baby boy stuff. When she had her ultrasound they told her it was a girl, she was crushed. She returned the boy items. Then she had another ultrasound around 8 months and found out that it was a boy after all. It's very possible that it can be a boy if they say girl.

9 Years ago my sister was told she was having a girl so we were all set up to welcome "Abigail" with a very frilly bedroom and we ended up with a wonderful boy.
My other sister and I had to rush from the hospital to the store so Chase would have a less feminine room. We still dont have a girl in the fam.

Hi!

I would simply call and ask to talk with an "advice nurse" for your doc--- then tell them your experience and ask for them to clarify and confirm the results. Remember, you pay them to do a job for you-- you are entitled to appropriate care and information.
Good luck!

Just so you know even if something was horribly wrong the ultrasound tech cannot tell you anything, they just take the photos and measurements for the Dr. to interpret. It's a liability issue.

All of my ultrasounds were right and matched what my gut feeling told me. But a friend of mine was told that her last baby was a boy (she already had 2 boys). She was so sad. But then she had another U/S for some reason and it showed girlie bits. So I wouldn't take this tech's word as gospel if you feel differently in your gut and she didn't show you something that told you for sure that those were girl parts. With my first I knew he was a boy and they showed me the U/S but I couldn't "see" it as well as with my other son. I would have questioned it if I hadn't already felt he was a boy.

Dear K.,
Call your Dr's office. Tell the Nurse or Receptionist what happend @ your viewing. Tell them that you feel unsure and uneasy about it! Tell them everything that you told me in your letter. The reason is this your the parent. After my first US I was told that they couldn't see anything and therefore couldn't tell me what was wrong or what wasn't wrong, needless to say the US tech was very new and didn't know what she was doing. We did get another US tech do the proceedure and we did find out that all was fine with our baby, but it's always better to be safe then worry yourself to sleep everynight! You take care. Let us know what happens!! ~C.

From my own experience, I know I believed my second pregnancy was going to be a boy because the whole thing was just so different from my first which ended up being a girl. I was shocked when the ultrasound showed that it was indeed a girl. I understand that the key here is did you see actual girl parts or just the absence of boy parts? If it is just the absence of boy parts they could have been hidden for whatever reason, however if the technician says (and they should be able to show you where) that they can see the actual girl parts, then you are having a girl but just a totally different feeling pregnancy.

That being said, I guess nothing is 100% when you can't actually see with your own eyes until the baby is born. That is the only time you will know for absolute certainty if it is a girl or boy. Congratulations on the baby, and it will all turn out just wonderfully no matter what sex it is!
