Ultrasound - Conroe,TX

I went to the OB today, and she reviewed the ultrasound results I just had in my 18th week. She said I needed to have another ultrasound, as there were "limited" views of the spine, cerebellum and heart. She did not seem concerned, and told me that the baby may not have been in the correct position ect. I left her office in tears, and am a nervous wreak! Has anyone else had this happen etc. She told me to wait about two weeks to schedule the appointment......Seems like if there was something wrong, she would get me in ASAP.....

What can I do next?

Hi L's Mom,

I'm sorry for how you're feeling. I know you're troubled, but I don't think you should worry at all. If there were anything wrong, she is obligated to tell you right away. If she has concerns, she'd let you know. No doctor would allow a woman who is at 18mos. to be uncertain of the viability of her baby. That would be a moral travesty. Think about it, if there is something that would make a baby unviable or totally deformed, women do still have choices at 18 weeks but not much longer. She's not keeping you in the dark.

She said that there is limited visibility. That has everything to do with the baby being in the wrong position. It's just like not being able to see the gender -- you just go back when the little peanut has changed positions.

If she had cause for concern, she would have been upfront about it. It would be morally reprehensible to do otherwise, and not matter what her moral opinions on choice are, that's a lawsuit no doctor would be fool enough to deal with.

I have lost 5 pregnancies and at the fist sign of distress with each one that made it to an ultrasound, I was told of the doc's concerns right away.

I wish you a peaceful pregnancy and a healthy baby.

True... whenever there is something wrong, they redo the ultrasound right then and there. More typically, in my experience they are in the room while the ultrasound is taking place, but the same thing happens all the time. Kiddo is in an awkward position, so they schedule you for another on in a few weeks... which does double duty, because they can see how things are progressing.

So breathe. :)

Yes, this has happened to me. My daughter was not in the right position and they couldn't get any good shots of her heart, brain, kidneys or genitals. I don't remember exactly, but I think her back and bum were rounded towards the backside of my body. I had to go back in for another scan. Everything was perfectly fine. She was just in a position that made it hard for them to look at every part of the organs they needed to see. I feel very confident that she is not concerned that something is wrong. They just need very specific angles to see what they are looking for. The babies don't always cooperate. Don't worry, I'm sure that is all that's going on. You can't count on the baby to cooperate the second time either. Have some juice before you go in to try and encourage him/her to move around some.

Relax. Worrying won't change anything and the stress is not good for you or your baby. This will be resolved by your next sonogram and 2 more weeks development will give you more to see and the baby most likely will be in a better position. Modern science is a wonderful thing, but I wonder how women managed pregnancy 200 years ago. They'd stop having periods for roughly 9 months, put on lots of weight and had no idea if they were having a boy or a girl or if there were any problems until delivery.

I think until the doctor is concerned, don't stress out about it. She gave you a reasonable explanation for why they weren't able to see everything the first time, and if she really thought it needed to be done earlier, she would have told you to get in sooner. My advice is not to worry about it until you get actual confirmation that there is a problem. Worrying just stresses your body out and causes problems you didn't have before. Relax- and enjoy your pregnancy.

Same thing happened with my ultrasound. He just wasn't in a good position for the tech to see his heart. They had me come back for another in like 10 days I think. Nothing was wrong, they just didn't get all the measurements they like to have. If you watch while they are doing the ultrasound, they take a ton of measurements, and you can't really even tell what they are looking at. We know what to look at for the big stuff, like "oh there is the profile" or the boy/girl parts, but they get closer than that and look at how large the valves are, how far apart bones are, how big the brain is. That is all the other stuff they are doing when they are doing an ultrasound besides just checking the sex for us. If the baby is laying just a tiny bit too far one way or the other, they can't get those measurements. It is absolutely normal. They want the baby to shift positions and they will try again. Some babies NEVER cooperate. You hear of people who don't know the sex because baby wouldn't cooperate. Imagine trying to get teeny tiny measurements of the spine compared to finding the genitals. If they are not concerned, it is just a matter of getting measurements for the record. I would be more concerned if it was just one measurement they wanted to double check. But all three, it just sounds like the baby wasn't laying right. I'm sorry they let you leave upset. Don't spend the next 2 weeks worried, I'm sure it is just routine.

I did not read what the other mothers have said, but this is what I think.

Tomorrow (Friday) you really need to call the Dr.'s office that you went to and leave a message with them and tell them that you really need to talk to the Dr. today about the Dr.'s appt that you had the other day.

When the Dr. calls you tell her all about how you feel and that you are extermly worried and you really need her to share with you if there is something wrong.

Be honest with her and she will help reassure you that there is nothing wrong and that you just need another ultrasound to get better information about your little one to put into your file and for her and you and your family.

Pray and trust in the Lord with all of your heart.
God Bless and take care and RELAX. = )

Had this happen at one of my US appointments (which is how I knew it was a boy before they even told me...uncooperative male LOL). They said everything looked fine during the ultrasound but were unable to do the measurement pictures that the OB needed to "sign off" that all was ok. I was rescheduled as well, though I can't remember how long it took, I think something like a follow up US in ten days. Try not to be too nervous about this (I know, so much easier said than done) and if its really stressing you very badly, please call them, explain how upset you feel and see if maybe they can get you an earlier US appointment. But I agree, if there were major causes for concern, they would have you in there ASAP.

breathe, momma, breathe......((((HUGS))))

I'm sure everything is fine, it genuinely sounds like the technician just couldn't properly see the parts she needed to. If there was a problem I would think she would either send you back to your doctor to tell you the results or they would schedule you in with another more experienced technician for an immediate ultrasound. If you are stressed about it, schedule it sooner, the two weeks was probably just a guess for when the baby would have changed positions.
