My 8 year old son was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Although, I work in the health field and you would think I could adapt, We have been riding a roller coaster ride for the last couple of weeks. When we think we have it under control than we don't. We have a great medical support system in Denver for all of our medical needs. What I want to know are there homeopathic ways to control this? And if there is more I can do for him to help him control the diabetes? We watch the carbs, we give the insulin shots, etc. but still I feel that maybe a natural path way would help also. Thanks L.

What can I do next?

My best advice to you is a insulin pump. My 7yr old son is diabetic, he was diagnosed when he was 5. We couldnt control his diabetes with shots,so his endo decided a pump was a good option. Its great, we change the infusion site every 3 to 4 days and no shots unless he takes a break from the pump.

My nephew was dagnosed when he was about 7 (he's now 17). Their family struggled with it my nephew has been hospitalized many times, some very serious. . . but the best thing that ever happened to him was Diabetes Camp. Every summer he goes to camp for a week - with kids that are just like him. They are the same age, they have the same fears, wants, problems, etc. It has been a wonderful experience for my nephew and it gave him what he needed in order to say "hey I have diabetes and I know how to deal with it". Since he started going to this camp, he has been able to monitor things better himself and take responsibility for himself and his actions - good or bad and they have been good. He goes to a camp outside of Boise, ID - but I am sure they have others in your area or you can see about attending the camp in Boise. I know they have scholarships to help if you need the fincial help to attend. If you want more information, email me and I will get it from my nephew. My husband also had diabetes and I know that my newphew handles his much better because he was able to get a handle on it, what it does, what it is, what he needs to do sooner than my husband, who still fights it or thinks he's cured himself so he can eat what he wants instead of what he should! Good luck to you all.

Hi L.,

I just talked to my friend in Arizona who is a registered dietician and a certified diabetes educator and he told me that because your son has type 1 diabetes (you may already know all this, but just in case I can help) his body is not making any insulin. He will need to get insulin from another source for life. There is currently no other option - no naturopathic solutions right now. His recommendation was to get him on a long-acting or rapid acting insulin or to get him started on an insulin pump and train him how to use it. I hope this helps!

My husband who is 28 was diagnosed with diabetes 1 with insulin shots 2 years ago. It was very hard at first to regulate and know what to do. Some of the things I know is that regular exercise helps alot. Slow carbs like wheat, whole grains, oatmeal release carbs at a slower more consistent pace. Eating small snacks all day really helps. Some days are good some days are hard. I think if you check his blood sugar regularly and write it down before meals and an hour after meals and a food log it might help to see what works for his body. I am no expert but have seen my husband go through the same thing. We haven't tried any natural or homeopathic ways. I just always try to cook really nutricious foods. Good luck!

Lauri, type 1 is tough especially for a little kid. Start looking for a Naturopath. Also look on indternet alternative medicine and Chineese Medicine has a different approach.

I was diagnosed with type 1 at age 12 (now 33). There are no "natural" remedies. I am surprised they didn't put him on the pump. I would ask your doctor about that, it can help with blood sugar level control because it delivers insulin in a way that simulates the way the body does it. And I would recomend diabetes camp also. I attended that as a child and made friends that I am still in contact with. It made me feel like I wasn't alone, which helps, especially when you are feeling like diabetes is controlling your life. Diabetes camp also teaches kids how to handle the disease themselves. Every diabetic is different. What works for some doesn't always work for others. That is why it is important to find a doctor you can work with. It can be scarry, difficult, and overwhelming at times. What can help is doing your research, read all you can so you are informed.
Hope that helps.
