Two Year Molars Coming in...what to Eat?

My son is almost two and must be getting his molars in. A month ago he vomited twice and then had tens days of diarrhea. The same things started up again on Thursday. I'm STILL breastfeeding and that seems to calm him.

My question is what should I offer him to eat? ALL he wants is whole milk. This makes the diarrhea worse but that's all he wants. I try Pedalite but he just pushes it away with his little hand. I'm running out of bland choices.

What can I do next?

Bananas, toast, rice, rice cereal, applesauce, push pedialyte, water, diluted juice maybe. Limit the dairy...just say no! I would think breastfeeding is still okay...just explain to him that mommy milk is okay but other milk is not until his tummy gets better. Good luck!

I have not used Gatorade because of the sodium but what about vitamin water. They make a light version. Juicey-Juice makes several vegt. fruit drinks I give my daughter with no added sugar or salt. Carrot & Mango is our favorite. I actually love them. I also buy pedalite shakes. They make a soy based blance protein drink like a Boost for adults.
Maybe tell him your out of milk? Stick the milk in the freezer or just dump it out. Just to see if he will switch to something for a day to help calm down his system.
Good Luck.

My kids never would drink pedialyte either, so i water down gatorade to 1/2 strength and give that to them when they have diarrhea, same with apple juice. I also use propel water, which has a few electolytes in it, but no sugar. This has seemed to work for me, and gives me some alternatives that they will drink to keep them hydrated during colds and stomach flus etc. Hope it helps!

I don't know how this would affect the diarrhea, but I've been feeding my daughter (16.5 months old) cheesy scrambled eggs. She loves them and they are easy for her to eat. She has had two molars come through lately and she refuses to eat anything that she has to chew.

I also feed her cream of wheat or oatmeal, yogurt, and bananas. The bananas should help with the diarrhea.

Do you give him any juice? If so, you may want to cut back. Applejuice causes loose stools.

Good luck! At least you are still nursing so you know he is getting what he needs!

I wouldn't force the food to much. Chances are this is temporary. Try yogurt, bananas, applesauce, chicken, toast, crackers, dry cereal, rice, warm water.

You could try milk with live cultures while he has diarrhea. Now that he is 2 years you should be able to switch him to a reduced fat milk. Perhaps less fat in his diet will help with the diarrhea.

My 1-1/2 year old will only eat frozen bluberries when teething. Good luck!

I have a 23 month old who is still nursing as well and we went through this a couple of weeks ago. She is dairy intollerant so the only milk she drinks is breastmilk, but she keeps it down so much better than anything else during these teething tummy aches.

So I agree with a previous poster, offer breastmilk more often as it will be the easist thing on his tummy and you wont have to worry about him dehydrating and not getting enough nutrients.

Toast and crackers are also things he might be able to tollerate. Hope it passes quickly for you guys!

Nurse nurse nurse!

My two boys are the same--diarrhea, vomiting, liquid diet, diaper rash, you name it! It was horrible!!!!

Anyway--my kids were willing to eat soft foods, not just milk, so we did popsicles (not healthy, but at least liquids that is not milk), yogurt, ice cream, applesauce...yep, that all gave him more diarrhea, but at least I knew it was from teething. It was summer, also, and we were on my inlaws farm, so I let him go nakey outside (the diarrhea wasn't THAT frequent; we just sent him out after he'd had a BM).

My kids didn't necessarily throw up from the food they ate; they threw up because of the teething--I think they were actually bored from eating such bland food. Then again, I didn't really want them vomiting spaghetti or blueberries. Will he eat baby food? Mashed bananas?

Remember, though, that's one of the blessings of nursing this far; you CAN just nurse him and he'll be fine. I think with my oldest it lasted about 2 weeks and then they came in (the symptoms weren't that frequent; he was just in pain that long); my youngest it was much shorter. So...hopefully it's on the way to being DONE!
