Two 16 Week Losses in a row-Has This Happened to You?

I am truly sorry for theirs and your loss. It is horrible losing a baby.

We lost Alexis at 22 weeks. They did an autopsy and found a DNA problem - according to them - my husband and I should not have any healthy babies...yet, we have two beautiful boys...so tests can be wrong.

We have determined that we couldn't have girls....as the three pregnancies we lost were girls...

I would ask for a genetic testing done for both parents and a comparative analysis done....there could be a specific chromosome sequence that just doesn't jive together...

It happened twice for me at 13 weeks. The first time it happened with bleeding and labor. The second time it happened the way it did with your DIL. I'm so sorry. It's absolutely devastating. To see that precious little baby with all it's fingers and toes on the screen and no heartbeat and the technician looking so hard for it. There are no words.

For me the losses were 1 and 6 pregnancy wise.

I lost 3 at all around the same time frame. Apparently 'getting' pregnant was not the issue: it was 'staying' pregnant due to low progesterone which impacts implantation to the uterine wall. Maybe she can ask about progesterone suppositories--worked for me.

Yes, it happened to me -- lost one baby girl at 14 weeks and a baby boy at 16 weeks. No genetic abnormalities were found in either pregnancy. Turns out I had a septum in my uterus, which needed to be removed in order for me to carry to term. I went on to have a healthy and happy baby girl. So, there is hope. I'll keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers.

This is such a sad time. I hope everyone gives the parents the space they need to deal with it.

Sorry for your loss. I agree with some of the other posters about the blood clotting disorder. It is VERY common & a huge cause of early pregnancy loss & sudden pregnancy loss (where nothing genetic is the cause) I have this & have two beautiful children (after two early losses). It's called Thrombophilia - it's the opposite of Hemophilia. I had to go on baby aspirin & I needed the extra help of an injectable blood thinner. I was more highly monitored - but I got to check on my kids all the time which was nice. I wish them good luck!

Has she ever had bloodwork called a thrombophilic workup? It would include lupus antibodies. At this point her doctors should have definitely run this. It might be the answer. So sorry.

I am so sorry for your loss and their loss..... Perhaps have your daughter tested for blood clotting disorders. I had a stillborn son when I was 27 weeks. They never really found out why but it turned out I had some blood clotting issues.... They never saw a clot in the fetus or the placenta so they still don't know why it happened. I went on to have a health baby girl and then another miscarriage at 10 weeks (but the testing showed genetic abnormalities, so at least we understood the reason). Right after that, I had healthy twin boys...
But I would definitely do a test for blood clotting issues. They won't routinely test for that until you have a late term stillborn or multiple miscarriages.

Another thing to look into is the shape of her uterus. It seems unlikely that a mullerian anomaly (strangely shaped uterus) would be the source of the problem given her history of successful pregnancies. However, it should be ruled out. A uterine septum would lead to multiple losses and often they happen at the same point in gestation. FYI--A uterine septum is a band of tissue that does not contain sufficient blood flow to sustain a pregnancy should the embryo implant on the septum. If no good answers are given for these losses, your DIL might want to consider having a diagnostic laproscopy/hysteroscopy to determine if she has a mullerian anomaly or if there is something else going on. The lap/hyst provides good visualization of the interior and exterior of the uterus. Imaging technology such as MRI is not as effective for diagnostic purposes. If she does have septum tissue, it can be removed during the lap/hyst procedure. It is a simple out patient procedure with a quick recovery time.

I suffered numerous losses myself both early and late term. It takes a very long time to recover from loss like that. I found the MISS Foundation grief forums to be very comforting. You might want to mention that to your DIL.
