Hello, I am currently 12.5 weeks pregnant and just found out that i am expecting twins!! I have a 4 and 1 year already so i am quite nervous about how i am going to care for them along with 2 new borns but I strongly believe that God doesn't give us more then we can handle!! Other then needing any and all advice on twins I am seeking advice on this: my doctor did an ultasound yesterday which is the first one i have had for this pregnancy and one of the baby's has an inlarged tummy and in the ultrasound there is this big black spot she said that is not sure what it is but that its not normal and is referring me to a specialist. the waiting is killing my husband he likes to get answers right away, me on the other hand i am trying to stay postive until i know its something more serious. Both babys had good heart beats and were active. Has anyone had this same thing happen? What was the outcome?
Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I finally got to see a specialist yesterday and unfortunantly it was good news. Found out that one babyhas hydrops which is where fluid fills up in two or more cavities of the body. The baby did not look normal at all. The doctor said that more then likely the baby will pass away soon. The other issue is that they are identical twins so if the hydrops was caused by a chromosomal defect then the other baby could be unhealthy aswell. So this doctor is going to keep a close eye on me and will see me every two weeks until the end of the pregnancy. She said they can do an amnio to find out what has caused this but I have always been against those cause I will not abort the other baby even if it comes back that something is wrong and I feel amnio are very risky....any thoughts or experienes on amnios?

Congratulations! I cannot offer advice on the ultrasound but agree that you should stay positive and try not to worry. Focus on the miracle of twins! I just love having twins. It is an amazing experience from the very beginning and it is not twice the work. Just get them on the same schedule from the start for feeding, sleeping, changing, etc. Makes life easier on you and them.
My biggest twin advice is to try to find a local Twin Mom club to join while you are pregnant. The other mothers are such a great resource for information and support. Plus, it is a great way to buy / sell tons of baby gear! Just Google it or you can check this national website for leads in your area http://www.nomotc.org/. Also, loved the book Ready or Not Here We Come!: The Real Experts' Guide to the First Year With Twins by Elizabeth Lyons.

Best of luck!

CONGRATS!! I always wanted twins... love kids, hate being pregnant, it's like killing 2 birds with one stone, LOL!!

As far as the ultrasound, there's no sense in worrying about something that may be nothing. I know, easier said then done, but try to make it your daily mantra ;)

At 12 1/2 weeks, there's not enough they can see to make an educated diagnosis. It could have just been the position of the ultrasound. If there was a leg/arm/umbilical cord all in view at once, it can show as an indistinguishable mass. BEST WISHES and hopes for a positive outcome!

Being the medical weirdo I am though, and totally not trying to scare you because this anomaly is SUPERRR rare, but it could be fetus infetu? A twin within a twin. It's soooo rare, but it could explain the enlarged belly and mass. As long as both babies have good heartbeats and everything's looking beautiful, breathe easy mama! Keep up posted! Good luck!

Congrats on the twins! Having twins is such an awesome blessing. Its a lot of work but its soooo worth it. When I was pregnant, carrying twins automatically pushed me into the high risk pregnancy category ( even though I had a perfectly normal pregnancy) All that meant was that I had to see a Neonatologist in addition to my ob and got to have lots of ultrasounds... I think I ended up having something around 14 ultrasounds just so they could check things out so I guess what im trying to spit out is that you will have a lot of chances to get answers, and im sure the outcome will be fine. I would also recomend finding the local twins club in your area, they can be so helpful since all of the mama's know what having twins ( or more) is like.

Congratulations on twins! You're going to have your hands full in addition to your other two...hehe. Hopefully your four year old will be a good helper for you! I found going from 2 to 3 babies was a handful. But going from 3 to 4 kids wasn't much different...but they weren't twins:-) You have a great attitude about it too!

As for the black spot that seems to usually mean liquid of some sort, right? My baby's always have a black spot in their tummy, so I'm not sure what would be different about it than normal, but I don't know a lot about ultrasounds beyond the usual! Hopefully the specialist will be able to put your mind at ease or at least give you some good answers! Keep us posted. I'm curious what it could be. Things like this can be so stressful. When do you go in for your ultrasound?

Since my first baby was born with so many health issues (major heart defect, kidney issues, and other things...all part of a rare genetic thing), we go to a specialist for our ultrasound every time. They are very good and thorough and really know what they are doing!

Congrats! I was 4 weeks along when I found out I was having twins-of course I had to wait I think a week or something like that to confirm that both sacs had heartbeats and sure enough they did! It is the most wonderful blessing-it truly is. It's hard but oh so rewarding but I think that goes with Parenting all together whether its single or multiple. Don't worry about the what ifs at this point until they have something solid.
My twins were my first but at least yours will be able to help out somewhat more the 4 year old of course but you can instill some help with the 1 year old too! My one word of advice-get you some help. Whether it is some church members cooking some meals up for your family to nana and paw-paw spending the night to help out so you two can get rest. I never had that luxery and hubby wasn't much help to be honest. I paid for it too ended up in the ER 4 weeks post-pardum sick as a dog! The ER doc told me that I was wearing myself out and to take it easy and get as much help as possible. ha! Easier said than done but if you have the help-take it! Never ever refuse it! Yu are right God doesn't put anything on us that we cannot handle....I never thought in a million years I could do it-I f I can do it anyone can-lol! Seriously!

Congrats! I don't have any advice about the spot - prayers are being sent for good news.

My twins are 2.5. My advice is to find a local twins club. Visit www.nomotc.org to find one. I thought it sounded cheesy to join a twins club, but mine has been a lifesaver. I can't imagine being pregnant and raising two babies at once without the support of other women who've been there. You'll need the support from people who know what it's like to have multiples. Some advice just doesn't work when there's two of them! Oh, and I also made it full term to 38 weeks (no bed rest needed, either!) with 8lb 7oz and 7lb 13 oz babies. Good luck to you!

Congratulations! How exciting! I have no good advise to offer you since I've never had twins, but just wanted to say that I think your way of looking at it is the best. We have an ultrasound in two weeks to diagnose a heart condition they found on ultrasound 2 months ago! Arg! If I think about it, it drives me insane! If I choose to not worry until we know for sure what's wrong then I'm okay! Worrying isn't going to change anything anyway, right?
I'll be praying for ya'll and hoping that they find both babies completely healthy! I hope that you and your husband can keep from stressing out too much! I know it can be hard! You are in my prayers! Again, Congrats!!!

Congratulations!! So exciting. Our identical twin girls are 5 1/2. They are so much fun and best buds. Honestly, the hardest time was the first 3-6 months. After that, piece of cake and I love, love, love having twins!! Your doctor may have already told you yes/no to this but if she didn't, make sure to ask the specialist if they share a placenta. It is VERY important to find out early on. Ours did. We had issues arise because of it but everything turned out fine. They were born at 37 weeks weighing 7 lbs. 6 oz. and 8 lbs 12 ozs. :)

I have a 2.5 yr old who was supposed to be a twin, but the twin only had a heartbeat for about 2 weeks (from 6 weeks to 8 weeks). I also have 3 month old twins. Good luck with the specialist - hopefully they will have some answers and everything will be ok.

I agree with some of the other comments - Get as much help as you can!!! My 2 yo has some serious developmental delays and neither of my twins are "easy" babies (they both have reflux, tons of spit-up, and all around are fussy unless you are holding them and sometimes even then) so it has been quite overwhelming for me. The fact that you have a 4 yo is good - they can help out and play with the 1 yo to keep him/her occupied while you care for the twins. If you don't already have friends with twins, you should totally join a moms of multiples group. Other moms of multiples can help you figure out things like how to breast or bottle feed them at the same time and things like that that can make things easier. Good luck!!
