Twins!!! - Fort Stewart,GA

At what point in your pregnancy did you find out you were carrying twins? With this pregnancy, as with my first, i am slightly paranoid about the possibility of twins. My maternal grandmother was a fraternal twin, and she had 4 sets of fraternal twins(8 out of 12 kids). My mother was in one of the sets of fraternal twins. My mother did not have twins herself, nor did her twin sister, nut i know the possibility is there. Last time at my 21 week ultrasound, i was a ball of nerves until the tech said there was only one. We will be so happy with whatever we are blessed with, but i know it will be added stress.

I also know that some of my cousins have had twins as well, but my mother was actually adopted and has just recently gotten in touch with her birth family so we do not have full information on every family member. We were shocked when all of this came out!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the responses so far . . . i think i need to give a little clarification!

Dad on purpose- I am currently 5 1/2 weeks along. I was worried before 21 weeks with my firat born.

Billy Goat- The cousins i was refering to are my newly found long lost biological cousins! That is one of the reasons for the paranoid feelings.

I wish my medical office did ultarsounds at the first appointment, but we are military and they will only cover 2 ... one around 20 weeks and 1 around 34 weeks. I am so jealous of those who get an extra view of their babies! :)

19 weeks, at my first ultrasound. Fraternal twins run in the maternal line and frequently skip a generation. So you do have an increased chance.

I think I found out about 6-8 weeks.

Sometimes they can make an educated guess by your blood test results. If the HCG level is really high, they might wonder if you are having twins. I had two blood tests and the level got even higher the second time, so I was told that it might be twins. A high HCG level isn't guarantee of twins, but just another indicator in the absence of an ultrasound.

BTW, my mom didn't find she was having twins until the 8th month....when they did an X-ray.

Well, I do not have twins but I have a friend pregnant with twins. She found out at her first appointment (at 8 weeks). She goes to the same OB as me and they do an ultrasound at the first appointment for dating and the ultrasound tech could tell almost right away she said.

My daughter said 'something' was not right and something 'in there' and at about 6 weeks she started bleeding and went to the hospital and they said 'you do know about' however they worded it, after doing a sonogram. They saw two in the same sac so they were identical. They are now 3 years old. We have another set of identical twins born to our oldest son and his wife, now 14 years old. Now our kids without children are 'afraid' but if identical twins are not hereditary they sure are showing up in our family and my sisters daughter was pregnant with twins too. They are exciting and yet a huge amount of work. My first two were a year apart and the oldest not walking yet when the 2nd one born but that was nothing to two at the same stage all the time. We love them to pieces though but you would know if you are carrying twins by now.

Twins run rampant in both sides of mine and my husbands family so it was always a little nerve racking when we went in. But with all (technically) 4 pregnancies we found out if we were having one or multiples at my very first appointment. There was never a surprise later down the road, we knew from the get go with that very first appointment/u-sound.

I was 14 weeks, but I looked much further along; more like 5-6 months. I gained 25lbs in the first 8 weeks. I stayed hungry. I craved meat all the time even though I didn't care to eat much meat. (I am now a pescetarian.) I could hardly keep my eyes open and often fell asleep mid-conversation.

So far it is has been determined that only fraternal twins are hereditary. Identical twins are not. If your cousins are not biologically related to you then your likelihood of carrying twins is quite low. It depends on other factors though. If there are twins on your husband's side of the family that does not increase your odds of having twins, but there are other factors. Read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twins

My girlfriend found out at 20 weeks. She had an ultrasound at 10 weeks and another at 13 and they were saying just one. She is now 30 weeks with identical twin boys.

I have not had twins, but the 3 people I've ever known to have them found out at around 8-10 weeks. The doctors suspected it a little before.

You're 21 weeks - there's one.

That's it. Game over. You might have twins with the next one, but I'm sorry - you're just having one this time.

We found out at about 8 weeks. By 20 weeks I was showing A LOT. :)
I think I was about the same size at 4 mths as I was full term with our son. At 29 weeks when I was put on bedrest, I looked like I was ready to pop. I was huge!! Ah, memories!
I guess what I am trying to say is you may be able to tell if you are pregnant with twins without an ultra sound if you start to show pretty quickly.
