Hi Ladies,
I want to ask for any recommendations/comments regarding purchasing a twin mattresses for my 3 year old twin boys. Should they be plastic covered like many infant mattresses or regular with a waterproof cover? Should they be soft or firm? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

I would get a regular mattress for them because they can use it for years to come.I have a 4 yr old and we got her bunk beds. One mattress is a Serta it is one the bottom and the other is a more inexpensive one it is on the top. Sometimes my mother comes over and she sleeps on the bottom that's why we have a good mattress there, My daughter doesn't seem to mind the cheaper one, she likes it because it is bouncier than the Serta. She has a waterproof cover on her mattress. They make them so they are just like a sheet; soft on top and you can put a regular sheet on top. Hope this helps.

I would suggest fairly firm. The mistake my husband and I made was getting a low end mattress, figuring with potty training it would be replaced in a few years. We didn't think about us lying in bed with him - it's just awful. So he's back in our bed again. If you never did co-sleeping and you never are in bed with your boys, it probably doesn't matter too much. I do suggest getting a light weight mattress (dense firm foam) - for those middle of the night sheet changes. Whether it be potty training now or a stomach bug later - there will be middle of the night sheet changes and struggling with a heavy mattress is awful in those situations.

Hi E. I think Mattress discounters has a toddler mattress it has a non absorbant cover. I found with my son the plastic covers made him sweat so I went looking for a mattress for a young child. L.

Hi E.,

Firm with a waterproof cover, but not plastic, because it is hot and sticky. Buy the highest quality you can afford, and with any luck, the beds will serve through the boys teenage years. L. S

Hello E.!
We took our son (now almost 7, then 3 years old) shopping for mattresses -- he was given a choice of 2 to pick from -- he picked the firmer of the 2. I bought him a waterproof cover that has a cotton layer over the plastic so it won't make him hot.

Good luck! I hope this helps

Hi E.,
We recently took my daughter to an orthopedic specialist and while there, asked about mattresses. He said firmness or lack of, won't affect the bones and such and comfort is more important when choosing a mattress, not the firmness. When I was a kid, my mom thought soft mattresses were bad but I guess that was a myth. I would choose something comfortable, and protect it with a waterproof cover- but not plastic. That gets hot and sweaty.
good luck.

Infant mattresses should not be covered in plastic. We just put our son's crib up and the mattress came covered in plastic. I cut it off and my son's father asked why I didn't leave it on...it really looked like it belonged there. I showed him the warning...without the warning he probably wouldn't have believed me because he said I think I'm the baby know-it all. *_*
They sell the sheet protectors and mattress pads for infant cribs also.

We got a regular twin mattress on the firm side for our 3 year old twins. We use waterproof mattress covers.

Hi E.,
Well I just purchased a twin mattress not too long ago for my soon to be 3 year old daughter, and I got a regular one with a waterproof cover. They recommended the mattress be extra firm due to their bones still being developed.
Happy Shopping!

I would recommend mattresses that are firm but still offer some padding for comfort, Sealy backcare is a really great one. I would use a waterproof pad that wraps around the mattress because when they are moving you don't want the pad to move also and bunch up. When they get older is when you can start worrying about softer mattress pads. (I used to sell furniture for Babies R Us). Good Luck

Hi E.,

get any affordable mattress & then buy the slip on plastic covers (they go on like a fitted sheet and clean up SO EASY)!!! They even have the ones that cover the entire mattress like a slip on with a zipper. The covers are not expensive & work wonders! My 6 yr old doesn't have any accidents anymore but I still put the fitted one on his sheet incase he has a nose bleed or if he happens to get sick & vomit on his bed. It makes life so much easier & again, clean up is so simple! And the mattress stays in perfect condition - seriously like brand new!

Good luck!
