Tums Causing Asthma ????

I never heard of asthma from Tums.
I'd be skeptical about it.
It does sound like the Tums are not doing enough to help your heartburn.
I'm hypothyroid, so I'm always worried about anything going on with it.
About 10 years ago I got a feeling in my throat like there was something in it I could not swallow.
I was convinced my thyroid was growing and trying to choke me.
I went to my ENT and he scoped my throat (numbs the back of the mouth and puts a camera down the throat through the nose).
Well - my thyroid was absolutely fine.
My esophagus just above my stomach was inflamed - acid reflux - and I was feeling it in my throat way higher up than where the irritation actually was.
A month on Prilosec cleared it right up.
I think you need an acid inhibitor for awhile so you can heal up.
I think the acid reflux irritation is causing problems in surrounding areas and the Tums was not doing enough to curb the irritation.
In a round about way, what he's saying is basically correct, but not in the way you think it is.

Never heard of that. But it is my understanding that reflux and heartburn can include shortness of breath, chest pain, back pain, and a myriad other issues as symptoms. Perhaps your tums wasn't controlling your reflux as well as you thought? Could THAT be what he was trying to get to? This seems very odd to me..... I think I'd want a 2nd opinion about it.

I think you might have mis-heard the doctor. Acid reflux can cause chest pain, upper back pain, lung pain and asthma. If you have bad reflux, you can aspirate the acid coming back up and that's what causes the problems. Tums can alleviate the stomach part of reflux problems, but it doesn't help with the aspiration. Perhaps what your doctor was saying is that the Tums helped you mask the symptoms of the reflux so that you didn't even know you were aspirating and causing other problems.

The new medicine you're taking is what is eliminating your pain - not being off of Tums. (I'm sure I know what I'm talking about as my daughter has serious GERD -- really bad reflux -- and we've done tons of research and asked a million questions of all sorts of doctors)

You may want to look into chiropracty to help cure your reflux. The medicine you're on only controls it... it doesn't fix it. But a chiropractor can determine if you have a structural problem that they can work on to keep the acid from coming back up your windpipe.

i have never heard of this but i have always taken tums frequently, and i did have asthma (although it was when i was a smoker so no shocker there). i have never NOTICED that tums increased my wheeziness...

one thing i have started doing on the advice of my health coach, is making alkaline water and drinking daily. i keep a pitcher of water in the fridge and i drink that instead of tap water. you just take a lemon and a lime, cut about three slices of each and put them in the water. once the water goes down you just refill it, and about once a week or so you replace the lemons and limes. it tastes great, very refreshing, and it alkalines your body (she says "nothing can grow in an alkaline environment). which is great in theory. i haven't noticed HUGE differences (i have never been one to get sick a lot - but, only two minor head colds this winter and no work missed), but i do have fewer and less severe headaches, and i have not wheezed, and my heartburn is less frequent. i won't say they have gone away but i used to have all of these, off and on, and now they are much more rare. worth a shot - it's an easy natural way to help your symptoms.

Wow - I never took enough Tums to have issues, but I've never heard of this either. My GERD came on very suddenly due to stress, and I was given a presecription. I am now off of the prescription, as well as a couple of other med's. I use a natural product called Florify - probiotics and prebiotics..........all gastric issues gone! Good luck! Is the asthma gone now that you are off tums! Hope so!
