Trying to Get Pregnant & Skipping Periods...

Hi I am currently 26 years old and have a son who will be 2 in March. My husband & I have been trying to conceive for at least the past 6 months with no luck so far. We are not over doing it & putting pressure on ourselves - I know that does not help. However I have not gotten my period since 11/29/06 (that was the first day it began) & it was a regular period for me. I have taken dozens of pregnancy tests (different types) & all of them are coming up negative. I feel moody, tired, and slight cramps - some days they get more achy yet no period. What can cause this if I am not pregnant? Can I still become pregnant if I don't have a cycle? I used to be irregular BEFORE I had my son but ever since then I have been pretty regular. I don't feel like I have changed my diet, exercise or have any more stress in my life to have caused this. I plan on calling my OB to make an appointment - but until then have any of you experienced this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

On the 21st I have a appointment to see a Endocrinologist (Dr. Bruce Rose in Clark Summit/Scranton area - he has a website with all his info) - I was referred to him by my regular OB Gyn - he has a great success rates...hopefully I will be able to conceive within a short period of time & resolve this problem I have with the poly cysts! I will let you know how it goes - thankyou gain for all your helpful replies!

S.,
I agree you should get a blood test done thru your OBGYN, this is the only true way to find out if you are pregnant. I have always had irregular periods (ovulating maybe every 3- 6 months & then no periods in between) since age 13 & knew it would be difficult to conceive. Our 1st son was born 21 months ago & it took us 6 months to conceive (that was the first time I ovulated since we had started trying). When I took the at home pregnancy test, it came back negative but I felt similiar to your symptoms. Infact I thought I had the flu/allergies, went to the doctor who did bloodwork & discovered I was 8 weeks pregnant. After my son was born, my cycle was still irregular & we miscarried 7 months after he was born (never even knew we were pregnant until I started clotting etc). Now we are having a scheduled c-section for our daughter this friday the 26th. It only took us 1 month to conceive, but it was during my period.
My sister never tested positive for pregnancy during her entire 9 months & I knew another lady who had her regular cycle the entire 9 months. My other friend spent $50,000 to try & conceive until they ran out of money. Within 4 months they got pregnant naturally & had twin boys 7 months later. Everyone's body is totally different. It can't hurt to get it checked by the doctor & ease your mind. Good luck & keep us posted. S.

first of all S. best of luck. Secondly you have to relax and stop putting pressure on yourself. Sometimes that by itself can cause all the symptoms you describe. It may not harm you to go get proffesional help if that is going to make things better. But remember it may make you more anxious. May be if you can for some time put this on the back burner and try to take a minivacation. It happened before it will happen again.

Hi S.:
Most of the people on here have read at least one of my responses, but I will fill you in, I am a retired Physician Assistant Certified in PA & AK. It is my educated opinion that you seek the help of your OBGyn, you could be pregnant and/or have endometriosis. If you see your OBGyn he/she can tell you for sure what is going on with your body. Sometimes it truly boils down to stress, consciously we don't think we are stressing but our subconscious is an amazing thing. I am sure you have heard stories of women who think they are pregnant and won't believe the doctor that they are not, they then gain the pregnancy belly and all (including lactation) even go into labor...no pregnancy. This is called a hysterical pregnancy...it is brought on by the desire to be pregnant, and the subconscious mind allowing the physical attributes to appear.
No matter what is going on, I hope you don't mind but I will pray for you. But PLEASE see your OBGyn...ASAP.
Warm Regards,
J. T

My best friend actually HAD her period TWO MONTHS into the pregnancy, we NEVER KNEW!! (weird huh??) Her doctor said that sometimes past a certain point, the tests no longer pick up the specific chemical that makes that pregnancy test say positive. I think it would be easier for you to just call your OBGYN so they can do a "real" test (bloodwork) and possibly find any reason why either getting pregnant is difficult, or even why your cycle is irregular (and will ease your mind)! You can just get all your answers in one stop. Hope that can help you!! D., proud mother of 5 1/2 month old Jaden Elizabeth =^._.^=

When was your last check-up? I ask this because I went through this before I had my daughter. I have endometreosis(sp)and didn't find out until after I had my daughter. I was told that it could be the reason I had such a hard time getting pregnant with her.

I went in to an outpatient center for carpal tunnel surgery and they did a pregnancy test b/c I hadn't had my period in a while (but I told them I wasn't pregnant b/c I had also taken a bunch of tests) and here I was pregnant. THe next week I found out I was 5.5 months pregnant with twins. Blood tests are the only way to really know for sure because those over the counter tests just don't work for some of us!

Your not going to get preg skipping periods that's for sure. Go see your dr and get that under control. It may be a thyroid problem.

I would make an appointment to see your OB. Just to let u know. When i concieved my son My last period was March of 03. I went to the docs in april and may and told them i hadnt had a period since the begining of march and i knew i was pregnant. The tests kept coming up negative. Finally on MOthers Day the test came out postive. My newphews wife had the same thing happen to her. The tests kept coming out negative and it wasnt utnil a blood test was done that it was confirmed. The tests the docs use in the office are the same as the ones u buy over the counter. I would set up and appointment and get a blood test done adn also so your doctor could make sure it isnt something else wrong. It could be a hormone imbalance. If thats the case you would need to get that fixed before a pregnancy could happen. Good Luck and let us know how it goes!
