I am going away overnight this weekend and am having a trusted neighbor and family friend watch my child. Anyone have any idea of how much care like this runs? I hate having to ask my friend myself, but at least wanted a ballpark figure when asking. Thanks to all!!!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow! What overwhelming and helpful responses! I can't thank everyone enough. It's the first time I'm leaving my son overnight and I'm so nervous! He's soon to be six and easy to manage, but I still worry :) I'm a single parent and have finally met a great guy. This "away" time is great b/c it helps us connect on a different level than we can when we do things with my son (which is most of the time). Most of you recommend charges in the ballpark I was thinking, so at least I don't have a shock here :) Again, thanks to all!!!!!!!!!

Hi J., I actually agree with Nora. If my husband and I go out for a few hours, we typically pay $40 for the evening. But if it's overnight, which we have yet to do (lol), I would probably pay about $100-$150. I guess it really depends on how long you'll actually be gone. Remember, your friend may tell you if that's too much, but they may not necessarily tell you if it's not enough. So you don't want to under-estimate an amount. Good luck and have fun on your trip!

Hi J. i have been a daycare provider for about 14 years. i do not charge as much as the other people pay or charge. I would charge 40.00 overnight then if she is going to have some part of the day. i would charge about 3.00 an hour because i get 25.00 a day. So i would say at the most 70.00 in all. I have 3 friends who have also done daycare for years and thats what they say too. good luck and have fun on your trip. steph

If you offer her too much $$$ your family friend will tell you. I watch children, and I have had children overnight. If I have them say from mid afternoon till the next day in the early evening, I would charge $100.00.

If you are away more than 40 hr, $150

When I was a nanny the family paid me an extra $75.00 to stay at their home overnight with their 2 boys, one an infant and one in kindergarten, so the baby was up in the middle of the night for a feeding/changing.

I would offer the friend an amount and if she thinks its too much she will tell you so.

You'll no doubt get more advice on here too!

How many nites away?
If I were to go for a day and a half I'd pay about $150.
I ususally pay my sitter $40 for a nite out anyhow reguardless how long I am gone.
It's been awhile since I did something like that and I had about a 13 hr absence from home and I paid her $100.

good luck

I am a nanny and I do A LOT of extra babysitting. I normally charge $12/hour. When staying overnight I charge a little less, here's how I break it down:
$12/hour until midnight
$6/hour from midnight until the child gets up
$12/hour until the parents are home

Several friends won't lower the rate overnight because there is still a responsibility factor and they are still "selling their time". I have done many overnights and also gotten a lot of positive feedback on how I charge.

Hope this helps!

Hi J., just a note.
ENJOY YOUR WEEKEND! Have FUN, and don't worry.

I think the $100 - $150 range is completely appropriate.

Maybe you'll get lucky with loving neighbors like ours, and she won't take one red cent! That's a wonderful gift to you, too.
