Trying to Be Patient.

For the love of pete. I know I am totally being impatient for this, but my sister and I went together and bought my parents a new stove for Christmas. My parents stove they have now has lost all the knobs so they have to use a thermometer to figure out what temp it is, and they are lighting it with a lighter. My mom has a degenerative bone disease and is currently going through chemo for breast cancer. There are times where she has to get on the floor to light the oven, and it takes a long time for her to be able to get back up.

So we bought the stove last friday online. My sister decided to go for a more expensive model and I told her that was fine, but I only had about 250 to spare (something I had to really save for). I told her I would send her that amount (the stove ended up being 410.) and she said she would cover the cost of installation to make it more even . Fine, she was going to have to deal with that part anyway because I live in Florida and they live in Missouri.

The stove was ready for pick up last Sat. My sister says I'm making the arrangements on Monday. So I still haven't hear from her as of last night. So I sent a text to see if she had any luck with it. She said her husband was taking care of it. She was at work so I sent a text to him. He gets all pissy and says he'll get to it when he gets to it. Ummm excuse me? He says he's tired of being harped on about it. Well, this was the first time I asked anything about it. So it ticked me off, so I sent him one back, you know if you just did what you said you were going to we wouldn't be asking about it. So, now he's all mad. Well, sorry, if you can't take it don't dish it out.

So my sister sends me a text and says they are trying to get in installed on the 17th. I didn't say anything but I am thinking, two and a half weeks? Why on Earth is it going to take so long? I realize that I've already stirred the pot, so I will let it go, but jeez. Sigh...I know that they are trying to make it a surprise and have it installed when my folks aren't there, and she is trying to have my aunt take them to see some Christmas lights that Sat. But I am afraid that my folks won't want to go, or something else will come up. I just think cutting it that close to Christmas is just not a good idea.

Am I just an impatient wench or do I have a legitimate concern here? I know I am being totally a control freak about it, but my sister is not always the most reliable person...Maybe I just need a drink. :)

Cheryl: We did get it at Sears, but they told us they only do the free install for electric appliances, not gas. Home Depot is the same way. I was actually going to go through Home Depot first because of what you said, but then found out about the gas thing. GRRRR.... Maybe I should call Sears about the delivery thing though....they were trying to charge us for shipping.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

LOL @ JO! They are in the Springfield area. They want to have a professional install it and check the lines. Probably a good idea since the original was put in by my uncle and granddad, (self proclaimed handymen), and their house is really old and starting to crumble around their feet. Sigh...I just wished I had enough money to get them a new house and call it good! The thing is that my dad is gone all day, and my mom goes to class from 8 - 12 every day. so it would be relatively easy to set it up during the week (my sister has a rotating schedule where she has a couple day off during the week). Sigh...

Well, they went ahead and set everything up for the 17th, totally ignored all my reservations like
We will be flying in the four days after they install it. Mom is totally OCD about having a spotless house when she has company so I doubt they will get her out of the house.
If something DOES go wrong, they may need time to fix it, order a part etc.
The scrap yard will not be open on Sat to take the old oven to, so they decided just to stick the oven in the yard.
I am not pleased, not at all.

Oh sweet mother, where in Missouri. I will pick the thing up and install it. Do they know it isn't rocket science. I installed my last range! It was a downdraft duel fuel. Pretty sure this isn't that complicated!!!

Why don't they just realize you are excited because that is an amazing gift and cut you some slack!

LOL @ Jo!! It might take you going to do it from the sounds of it!!

Most places do free delivery and installation - so why not just pay for that? And either way, your sister and BIL should understand the spot your parents are in and do it NOW. The whole weekend went by with no luck. The 17th is a long time to wait when your parents are doing what they are to be able to cook.

DANG! They need to hurry up and get the stove in there. I'd be like white on rice nagging, personally. They don't like it? tough. I'd also be calling around arranging for quicker installation even if you're out of state.

I don't know about not being patient becasue I too would be irritated!! I am the type of person that likes to just get things done and in your moms case its very necessary!!! I would keep on your sister about it, call her out, see whats really going on. If need be you oculd probably just get your mom a cheaper stove yourself and have it installed. So, your not being rude, but still have a drink, it's the Holidays!!

if they bought it from Home Depot (and Sears too) - anything over $350 is free delivery and install...including removal and disposal of the old appliance.

I get why you would be upset and frustrated. I don't know what the hold up is.

I'm sorry your mom is going through so much. How sweet of you to get them a gift that they can use for a long time to come!!!

Since it was the 1st time you asked and he reacted that way, it sounds like you aren't the only person that was asking. I bet your sister has been on him too. So, I would cut her some slack. She is trying to motivate him and also cut him some slack for reacting that way. She's probably nagging him to death! You guys are doing a really nice thing. Try to stay focused on that part of it rather than getting hung up on the details.

I have a sister like that. I always like to say to people "She made me OCD...I wasn't born this way".

No matter what happens I think that is a nice gift and nice gesture you did. I would never get my parents a stove. My mom would bake/burn fish in it the first time and then it would always smell like fish whenever they'd use the oven.

Hope your mom is doing ok w/her treatments.

I'd let them deal with everything, and only pay her the $250 once your parents tell you it's in the house. Pay them, not Sears.

Your BIL is probably being pissy because his wife has tried to punt it all off on him and he's irritated with her. He shouldn't be fussing at you, but it sounds like that's the way he is...

So yeah, back off and stay out of the rest. You have told your sis that you will pay $250 - the rest is up to them.

Good luck!
Dawn

I used to have a gas stove and I recommend you have a professional install it. It doesn’t take too long if there is a gas line already there. It doesn't surprise me that Sears would take so long or to charge a fee. I had gotten a stove from them and the sales person sold me a natural gas instead of propane (yes there is a difference). What a pain in my butt, I had to wait another month to get the proper one. Thank goodness at that house my MIL's apartment was attached I had to use her stove.
I would call Sears and find out when the delivery will be and make sure they are going to install it. I know they do have a charge for the install, but I think it is worth it.
