Trying After the Pill

My husband and I are currently trying to get pregnant. I was on the pill for over a year and stopped taking them in June 2006...to date, no pregnancy. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how long this process usually takes especially after being on the pill for a while.

What can I do next?

I was on the pill prior to both of my pregnancies. Both times I got pregnant about 3 months after I stopped taking the pill. Good luck! (FYI - I have 2 boys that are 2 yrs apart. If you do have another boy it works out nicely as they are great playmates & friends.)

Hi There! Congrats on trying to conceive. After I had my first, we waited almost two and a half years and decided it was time for another. i came off the pill expecting to conceive as quickly as I had the first time. Boy,was I wrong. I spoke with my OB and he placed my on a pill to make my body ovulate. Can't remember the name but it started with a "p". The first time I took it, it didn't work-the second time thankfully it did. I recently gave birth to my third child and conceived him without problem. Sorry that you are having difficulties. Good Luck!!!!!

Try to figure out when you are ovulating which is usually a fews days before you start your period. But they have the kits now that help you determine when you are ovulating.

I took the pill for about 13 years and got pregnant after about 3 months off. I realized that I was thinking I was ovulating around the same time I would have been on the pill, but off of the pill, my cycle is about 5 weeks instead of 4. As soon as I figured that out, I got pregnant. Good luck. Sometimes it does take a while. So enjoy the trying too. :)

I just found out this weekend that my husband and I are expecting our second child after a year of tryinig. After our daughter was born I went on the pill. I stopped taking the pill somewhere around August last year. I know it is no comfort to hear the words be patient, i heard that for four and a half years before I got pregnant with our daughter. i bought some over the counter ovulation testers to use to help find my time of ovulation and that seemed to help as weel. Most fertility doctors won't do much until you have been actively trying for one year. Hang in there!!!

You should be able to concieve right away after getting off any kind of pill. As long as you took them as percribed and have regular periods.

I always heard that the longer you are on the pill, the longer it takes to get pregnant once you are off. But when we started trying, my doctor assured me that that was not true. I second the recommendation on the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility". It talks about charting your temperature, but tells you that when you see the spike in your temps, it may already be too late. Temperatures are a good way to tell if you already are pregnant before taking a test, but there are other ways to tell when you are actually ovulating. So if you really want to save some time getting pregnant, invest in that book!

Hi! Just wanted to let you know that it took me 9 months to conceive after I got off the pill. My dr said that you should be able to get pregnant right away- and I know lots of people that have. He also said that it can take up to a year, and not to get worried or consider it a problem until actively trying for a full year. Like I said, it took me 9 months (frustrating months!), but it did happen. The second time, I got pregnant without even trying (while using a form of birth control!) You just never know. It will happen for you. Try not to get discouraged!!! Good luck!!!

It took us 4 months of trying and I had been on the pill for 10 years.
Just be sure to relax and not think about it all the time. I know that's hard to do, btu that is when it happened for me.

It varies from woman to woman. I was on the pill for 7 years and got pregnant the 2nd cycle off. I highly recommend www.fertilityfriend.com. Start charting your cycles, taking your temps, see when you are most fertile and make sure you are timing it right. They usually say if you are under 35, try for a year before seeing a doctor, but if you are really concerned and don't want to wait that long, you may only want to wait 6 months. But charting is the first step so I would start now. You can get great deals on ovulation tests and pregnancy tests on eBay. Best of luck to you!!

I've only heard that a couple of months but some women have gotten pregnant the next month.

You could have a progesterone deficiency. I have had 3 other friends that had to seek help for infertility and all were put on a synthetic Progesterone to help. All got pregnant. Progesterone is very important for pregnancy and I found that I was deficient after I had my baby. I was so bad off I had body aches, depression, and hair loss. Doctors normally won't test your levels since it's a hormone that changes all the time but it can't hurt you to try a natural product. You can get 3% progesterone over the counter at a natural pharmacy. It's a bio-identical (meaning it's the same as synthetic progesterone but natural) and it's compounded. Anything over 3% must have a prescription.

My husband and I had to go through Invetro to have our son and I had to be on progesterone to support and help through the process. I was on strong shots but all you will need and all I take now is a cream that you rub on thin skin parts of the body like a lotion. For example on the inside of the arms, thighs, breast, or even your stomach. It's something a woman naturally produces so there are no side effects. Birth control can deplete progesterone and B-12 from your system. Both my family and OB doctor suggested I go on a B-12 supplement to help with my symptoms. B-12 is also needed for fertility. Look for Methyl B-12 while you are at the natural pharmacy or go to a natural food store,it's just a little dissolvable pill you place under your tongue. Start with one dosage (about 5ml) of the progesterone per day and take 2 (even though it says one per day) of the B-12for 2 weeks then drop to one. B-12 is like vitamin C anything your body doesn't needs it rids in urine. Let us know what happens

It all depends on your body. My first one it took 6 months, my others, about 2 months. Don't stress either. Stress interfere's with conception. Good luck!

I agree with Carolyn (below) about charting your temps and making sure you're trying at the right time. I have a long cycle so I had to try longer throughout the month. A great book is Taking Charge of Your Fertility.

It can happen immediately or it take up to a year, it just depends on how your body responds. since it has only been not quite 4 months I would keep trying, you might want to buy an ovulation kit and start tracking so you have a better chance of trying when you are most fertile. If you don't have any response about a few more months you might want to see a fertility specialist just to make sure that hormone levels and everything are ok. good luck to you.

I highly recommend the book "Taking charge of your fertility". It teaches you how to chart your cycle - so you know what days you're most fertile. I charted after stopping the pill and we had great success (and now have a gorgeous little girl). Whatever you end up doing, I wish you the best of luck.

I've heard that it takes 3 mos. for your body to adjust to the pill when you first start. So, I'd imagine it's the same time frame once you stop using it. It took us 2 1/2 mos after we stopped.

I was pregnant right after I stopped. My girlfriend took about 6 months when she stopped. I am sure you are just missing the time. Do you count the days of peroid? When you start and stop. 10-14 days after your peroid is when your egg drops. I can tell when mine does. Real bad cramps for that day. Sounds weird but I promise this is how all my girls where conceived.Good luck and don't worry. It will happen just enjoy everyday with your family. A.

I'm happy for those who concieved quickly, but don't worry if it takes longer. It took us 9 months after the pill. The best thing you can do is relax (of course it's always the toughest thing to do as well). Stress is a big hinderance to conception.

Good Luck!

I too took the BC Pill - for about 4 years - my husband and I decided to try and conceive and it took about 5 months before we were lucky. I found that doing Body Basal Temperature charting (BBT) helped us TONS. I would recommend charting for you as well. After discontinuing the pill I found that my body was adjusting my cycles - from 28 to 27 to 26 and so on days in a cycle until we got pregnant on a 24 day cycle in the 5th month. By charting you can notice patterns like this and adjust for them.
I used www.babycenter.com for my charting...

Good Luck!

It took me years to get pregnant, but went to a chiro on an unrelated issue and after lower body adjustment was pregnant in no time. It happened quite to my surprise; I had given up! Don't know if it was a coincidence, but may not hurt to look into it! Best Wishes!

My doctor told me 50% of people get pregnant within 6 months of trying and something like 70% get pregnant within a year of trying. For us, it was definitely harder getting pregnant the second time, but it still only took six months. My natural cycle has changed everytime I've stopped the pill, so I've had to relearn my body.
