Trouble Burping 4 Month Old

A breastfed baby hardly ever requires burping. Breasts work differently than bottles (last time I checked, mine weren't filled with air! *l*), and unless your milk flow is uber, UBER fast, and ds is frantically gulping to keep up and therefore gulping large amounts of air (which results in uncomfortable gas)...You shouldn't have to wake him from a sound sleep to get something out of him.

Heck, maybe he's not burping for you because there's just no air in him! In that case, good job, momma! :) That's a sign that things are going swimmingly for you both.

I'd go ahead and try a few nursing sessions, then leave out the burping. If ds exhibits signs of gas, try out a nursing position that's different than what you're currently used to, and do a double and triple check on his latch, just to make sure everyone's hooked up correctly.

Does he take a pacifier? Our son never officially took one, but I would try to give it to him in situations like this one. This way he's not getting any more in his belly to have to start all over with the burping. Good Luck.

Our daughter had burping issues. Sometimes standing up with her so that her legs would extend also helped. I would also make sure she burped before switching to the other side during the same feeding. For a while, I would have to hold her upright for 20-30 minutes after feeding so that the burp would happen. That was my least favorite for the 2AM feeding when I had to get up at 5:30AM for work.

My childrens doctor always told me that a breast feeding baby hardly ever gets air in their tummy so the burping can be hard. I hardly ever got a burp from any of my children. If the child has a secure enouch latch onto mom then the baby should be okay. That is what was always told to me. I then used the playtex bottles with my youngest and still then never really got a burp out of her. I always rubbed my girls back just to relax them even more. If your son does not burp honey let him sleep. If you feel worried about this then ask your sons doctor. That is what I ended up doing because with my first child I was affraid that I was doing something wrong. It is always comforting to know what the Doc has to say though.
