Trimmer / Edger for Father's Day

I (I mean, the kids...) am thinking about getting a cordless trimmer or edger for my husband for Father's Day. We just use a mower now, and we aren't getting close around trees and bricks that surround flower areas. I know absolutely nothing about these. First, so I want a trimmer, or an edger? I don't know the difference. Then, is there a certain one or brand that works well?

What can I do next?

My husband has the Worx GT...it is an edger and a trimmer. He says it's not the most powerful one out there, but it uses a battery so it is lighter than a gas one and doesn't confine you the way an electric one does. He says it works great and does a good job of both...edging and trimming.

You can look it up online...I know he ordered it that way. Just a suggestion...good luck! (Way to think ahead for Father's Day!)

A trimmer is what is needed. Edger is used to cut the grass away from the sides of a sidewalk or driveway. Depends on the amount wanting to spend, a good timmer could cost well over $200.00, I wouldn't recommend an electric trimmer they really don't have the rpm's like a gas powered one does. If its not going to be used but to trim around a few trees and flower beds, the one's at Home Depot or Lowes would be fine. Keep in mind, trimmer's come in 2 cycle or 4 cycle engines. A 4 cycle is a little heavier than a 2 cycle but it doesn't require mixing the oil and gas to run it. A 2 cycle does require mixing gas and oil. Hope this helps.

Hi! I just got a grass hog trimmer for Mother's Day and I LOVE it. Its cordless and it works great. I got mine from Home Depot. I cut the grass and do all the edging. I believe my hubby spent 100 on it.

A trimmer is a device you hold up off the ground to cut the edges of the lawn next to fences, flower gardens, house, etc. It usually has a spool of nylon string that whips around to do the cutting. I bought an electic one (I was tired of having the rechargeable batteries die on me right when I was in the middle of the job) for my husband about 20 yrs ago for fathers day, and I (please note that pronoun!) have used it maybe 3 times, it's so heavy! I got the message that he was not pleased with his gift since he has never used it! An edger cuts the grass that has overrun its boundreies onto sidewalks and driveways and drives a circlar blade between the lawn and the edge of the cement. It needs a decent gas or electric motor to do the job.

I just got a brand new Cordless Black & Decker Grass Hog Trimmer/Edger last week and it is wonderful. It is lightweight (I have carpal tunnel) and runs on a battery that you recharge. Actually, it comes with 2 batteries which is great since you can still trim while the other battery recharges. I got it at Home Depot for $99.00 plus tax.

First of all, the difference is that a trimmer will trim around all the trees and garden edges whereas an edger will edge along the street, driveway and sidewalks between the cement and the grass. For a trimmer, I would highly suggest spending a bit more to get a gas one so you don't have to worry about a cord around the whole yard. Craftsman has been a wonderful brand for us. We have had the same one for about 15-20 years now and it still works great! You can get Craftsman at Sears. A trimmer can also stand in as an edger until maybe next father's day when maybe you could get one of those. But if you are getting one item, definitly go with a gas, Craftsman trimmer.

Like everyone else has said you want a trimmer aka weed whip. I bought one last year for myself from Home Depot which is a rechargeable one so there's no cord and there's no gas. I only spent 50 bucks and it works great. The battery life lasts about 30 minutes so I do some trimming in the front first around my flower beds and trees, plug it back in, mow the lawn and then finish the trimming in the back. Works out perfect!

Hi C.,

Beleive it or not, but for my birthday last year my husband bought me a combination trimmer/edger from http://www.worxyardtools.com/. It's made by black n decker and I love it! I wanted something that I could actually carry around the yard and help out eith the yard work. Check out the site. I'm sure that he will enjoy this product.
