Hi Moms! My son will be turning 2 in November. He is a late walker at 19months. I am wondering if anyone has any tricycle suggestions? I've seen the version that One Step Ahead has as well as the Kettler brand and store brands like Little Tykes and Fisher Price. I just want to get the best one for him that will have the most use. Thanks moms for all of your suggestions!

I know you are looking for a trike, but you should look into getting him a Fropper.
My 25 month old son has been getting use out of it for a while now. We also have a used Kettler with push bar (got second hand for $12!) and he doesn't have much interest in it yet. His feet touch the pedals and he "pedals" when I push him but he's just not ready to take off on it yet.
The Fropper has 4 wheels and has a sort of bounce in the seat. He'll walk that thing all the way down the street to the playground! It's also ok to have indoors if you have the space. You can get a parent push bar for it but I haven't bothered to.
All in all, have fun and don't try to push him to use it if he's not ready yet!!!

Hello L.. We actually have the Radio Flyer one. My son turned 2 in August and now is riding the bike all by himself but it was nice when he couldn't do it - the handle was fantastic to push him around. Hope you find the right one for you. Good luck.

Nothing new to add, just want to restate recommendations for a push handle. If I remember correctly, my daughter couldn't reach the pedals at first, but we were able to push her while she got used to the feel. She is 4 now and there are still times when she chooses to use it...and needs a little push up the hill.
Enjoy!

We got our grandson a used "little hot wheel" and he did not peddle it for almost a year but he did "walk" with it all over the house until he started preschool. I found it much easier and cheaper to get a used one for him to learn on and get the new one for when he graduated to 2 wheels (with training wheels o course) that was at age 4.If you do go new make sure you have one that fits his body (leg length) so he can reach the peddles

Hi
I love the Deluxe Steer & Stroll Trike from Radio Flyer. It has a handle so you can push as well and a sun canopy. My son is 4 and still rides it. Nice steering and cute and colorful!

I think I have the radio flyer too - it came from target (only bike that didn't come from a bike shop). my advice - get the parent handle that STEERS and you can push! Oh, made life so much better to have that one - I used to push my nephews on the Kelty that I couldn't steer. More expensive and more difficult. The parent bar easily removes for independent riding. We'd put it in and use the trike like a stroller when at parades and going for walks - except our son could pedal and steer for himself as well.

Hi L.,

I would definitely encourage you to go for a Kettler. They are amazingly well-built, strong and will last a long time. The frames adjust to grow with your child, and most models come with a push-bar so you can help them get going in the beginning.

You can find a lot of Kettler models on our website (http://mbeans.com/kettler-international.html), but if you feel like taking a trip down into the Boston area, you can visit one of our stores and see them in person. We can also assemble it for you, which will save you some time. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any follow-up questions.

Take care,

S.

Hi,

My husband bought our 2 year old son,the Radio Flyer tricycle that has an adjustable seat, because he is on the small side, and can't reach any of the pedals, on the tag sale finds that we have. He is still learning to ride it; it would be helpful if it had the steer bar, so we could help him, but thought this would last longer, since it would grow with him. He purchased it at Toys R US.

HI there, I just went through the same debate. We ended up getting our little girl, who just turned two early August, this one:

http://www.target.com/Schwinn-12-Roadster-Tricycle/dp/B00...

We got the pink one but its the same. What I like about it is that it's solid, well made, has real tires and is low to the ground so less chance of tipping. However, it lacks the parent push bar and I can really see how that would come in handy!

I'm sure he'll love whatever you get, it's more about the features you want.

I would get one with the handle you can take it on a walk and push via the handle and when it is time for him to be peddling on his own, then your back is not aching from bendoign over and pushing him and helping to steer....
