Go see your doctor. We ended up in ER and found out he had RSV at 2 1/2 months.

Make sure they drink enough breastmilk or formula and call the doctor if he/she gets fever or doesn't want to eat. If they have a hard time breathing through their nose, it sometimes work better if they sleep with their heads up, in a car seat or something. Good luck, it will pass!

R.,
This could just be normal newborn congestion not related to a cold. Often babies get congested after birth and the extra sneezing etc. is the babies natural way of clearing the nasal passages from extra amniotic fluids and this could be the proble.
The only thing you can do safely if this is a cold is to use saline drops in the nose for relief and use a soft tipped bulb syringe to suck out the mucous.
The other thing you can do is raise his head of bed a bit. Also use a really good humidifer without filters. These cause more bacteria in the air and that is not good. I bought the Vicks brand with a resevoir at the top for vicks liquid and this along with the hot water vapors goes into the air and helps baby breathe. I completely believe in using these. My older girls are 9,9 and 6 and still use a humidifer if they get a cold.
Don't use any OTC meds, they arene't good. Not until at least 6-8 months.
Good luck,
Trish

At that age, call your doctor. It may be allergies, but you should take your child in just in case.

Our daughter had a terrible cold at 2 months. Besides going to the doctor to check out your baby, I suggest getting saline solution and a suction. Sometimes they sell them together in the box. I believe the one we got is called little noses. We also got a vick's vapor cold humidifier which really helped a lot. Then propping up the mattress with a wedge. We used the car seat, but she ended up with a flat head on one side, so I wouldn't suggest doing that. Otherwise, it'll run its course and there's really nothing you can do. It takes about 10 days to fully recover. There are Asian stores that sell herbal medicine which are safe for infants, since American infant cold medicine isn't sold anymore. One we use is called African Sea Coconut Brand Cough Mixture in a yellow and red box which really helps coughs. That's if your baby's cold gets to that point.

Also, beware of thrush after the cold. Our daughter got it and we had to get rid of a lot of things since it's contagious. If your baby is bottle feeding, you would have to change the nipples (possibly change them after the coldis gone) and if you're breastfeeding, you can get thrush on your nipples which isn't pleasant. I would ask your dr. if there's a way to prevent thrush, since we never found out how. Good luck and hope things go well. Take care!

Watch for a fever or difficulty breathing, if this occurs call the doctor. Otherwise to help out our babies when they got colds we used a saline solution (bought at Target, Walmart etc) and sprayed up their nose and sucked it out with a bulb syringe (gross and they HATED it, but it helps a ton) and then we also used a cool-mist humidifier while they were sleeping(they did this in the hospital for my son when he had croup too, it helps thin the mucus).

OUr 5 week old daughter had a "cold" which turned into pnemonia. The doc told us to just give her Tyelnol and keep her elevated. She eneded up in the hospital for a week. So just watch it and make sure that the baby does not have labored breathing.

Do not give your baby motrin as previous person suggested!! Motrin should not be given to babies under 6 months old unless directed by the doctor!

Humidifier in the room and saline spray (sold as infant drops), and suck out the mucus with a bulb syringe!

I motion Trish's natural options and do not give any Tylenol... MOTRIN is better!!! Because Tylenol depletes Glutathione from their bodies and causes them to build up toxicity!!! Love, G.. :0)
P.S. I love my humidifier frog bought at TARGET!!!
